Your Important Role Girls succeed when families get involved. You can support your girl by giving her love, guidance, and inspiration. There are also some specific responsibilities you’ll need to assume to ensure your girl achieves her goals: • Help your Girl Scout set goals and coach her on how to sell. • Make sure your Girl Scout does not take orders prior to the program start date. • Collect payment upon delivery, not before. Be sure to turn over all funds to the troop cookie manager as soon as possible. • Remember that cookies cannot be returned to the troop or council once signed for. • Accept financial responsibility for all cookies and money received. • The cookie program helps Girl Scouts learn honesty and fairness. Failure to account for money and products received will be considered misappropriation of funds. 7
How Girls Sell Cookies In Colorado, girls sell cookies through these channels: In-person With cookies in hand, girls ask neighbors, friends, and family members to buy cookies. Booths Troops sell cookies directly to customers, often at booths in high-traffic areas such as grocery stores, malls, or sporting events. Digital Cookie™ Girls create customized ecommerce websites and send emails to people they know, asking them to buy cookies. Customers place online orders, and the cookies are shipped directly to them. Find out more at girlscoutcookies.org. Gift of Caring and Hometown Heroes Recognize the great work of community heroes by participating in the Gift of Caring and Hometown Heroes programs. Cookie program guidelines With thousands of girls in Colorado participating in the cookie program, it is essential that we provide guidelines to ensure every girl is safe and successful. Girl Scouts must always respect areas that have no solicitation rules and should be a sister to all other Girl Scouts they encounter when selling cookies! Per established policies by GSUSA, girls cannot sell cookies to a business that plans to resell the product to its customers. 8
Safety Tips Be sure girls understand and follow these safety rules: •S how you’re a Girl Scout—Wear Girl Scout clothing and/or the Girl Scout membership pin to identify yourself as a Girl Scout. •B uddy up—Always use the buddy system. It’s not just safe, it’s more fun. •B e streetwise—Become familiar with the areas and neighborhoods where you will be selling Girl Scout Cookies. •P artner with adults—If you are a Girl Scout Daisy, Brownie, or Junior you must be accompanied by an adult when taking orders or selling/delivering product. If you are a Girl Scout Cadette, Senior, or Ambassador, you must “buddy up” when selling door-to-door. Adults must be present at all times during cookie booths. •P lan ahead—Always have a plan for safeguarding money. Avoid walking around with large amounts of it or keeping it at home or school. Give proceeds to supervising adults who will turn it in to the TCM or troop leader for deposit into the troop account. •D o not enter—Never enter the home or vehicle of a person when you are selling or making deliveries. Avoid selling to people in vehicles or going into alleys. •S ell in the daytime—Sell only during daylight hours, unless accompanied by an adult. •P rotect privacy—Girls’ names, addresses, and email addresses should never be given out to customers. Use a group contact number or address overseen by an adult for customers to request information, reorder, or give comments. •B e safe on the road—Always follow safe pedestrian practices, especially when crossing at intersections or walking along roadways. Be aware of traffic when unloading product and passengers from vehicles. •B e net wise—Take the Girl Scout Internet Safety Pledge before going online and follow the specific guidelines related to marketing online. girlscouts.org/help/internet_safety_pledge.asp. The Five Skills The Girl Scout Cookie Program® helps your girl succeed today and prepare for future success. With every package she sells, she builds on 5 essential leadership skills she can use for a lifetime: 1. Goal setting—as she sets cookie program goals and makes a plan to reach them. 2. Decision-making—as she decides how her team will spend the cookie money. 3. Money management—as she makes a budget, takes orders, and handles customers’ money. 4. People skills—as she learns to talk and listen to all kinds of people while selling cookies. 5. Business ethics—as she is honest and responsible every step of the way. The time, talent, and support you give your girl— and all Girl Scouts—by participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program are extremely valuable. Thank you for helping them learn, grow, and make a lasting impact on the world. 10
5 Steps to Cookie Success 1 Help her sell online Digital Cookie enables girls to set up their own personalized sales pages, take credit card payments and ship cookies directly to their customers. Girls can set goals and track their progress, too. 2 Encourage goal setting Goal setting is an important life skill. She’ll go far if she knows how to set a high goal and reach it. • Ask about her group’s goals and help her set personal goals. • Help her complete the order card section that explains her group’s goal. • Encourage her to share her goal with customers. Customers want to help girls succeed. • Guide her to set practical and useful goals about what she wants to learn and earn. 3 Support her sales She needs you to be on her side as she develops the confidence to ask people for orders. • Ask her questions and help her practice her sales message. • Help her take orders or arrange booth sites at work, places of worship or other locations frequented by people who love Girl Scout Cookies. • Go with her to sell and deliver cookies. • Help her network with family and friends, but let her do the “ask” so she can learn important business skills. Share email addresses of family and friends for online orders. 4 Volunteer Her group needs help chaperoning booths, picking up cookies, and more. 5 Practice safety Help your girl understand the Girl Scout safety rules, found at girlscouts.org/cookies. 11

The Girl Scout Promise and Law The Girl Scout Cookie Program can keep you busy and it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important. A great way to keep things focused and positive is to put selling cookies in the context of something bigger and more important. The Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law remind girls—and you!—that selling cookies lets them practice being fair, kind, helpful, respectful, and wise. And it helps them make the world a better place. That’s what it’s all about. The Girl Scout Promise The Girl Scout Law On my honor, I will try: I will do my best to be To serve God and my country, honest and fair, friendly and helpful, To help people at all times, considerate and caring, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. 18
Impressing Like a Girl Scout The Girl Scout Cookie Program gets Girl Scouts, families, and volunteers in front of the public, where they can demonstrate the impeccable values and behavior that make Girl Scouts stand out. Review and agree to these guidelines for how girls and adults should present themselves while selling cookies: For girls: On my honor, I will follow these rules while participating in the Cookie Program. I will show that I am a Girl Scout. I will dress appropriately for the weather. I will always smile and be polite. I will stand quietly (unless I am speaking with a customer). I will tell customers about my goals. I will stay out of the store’s walkway. I will follow any rules the store requires. I will always say, “Thank you!” For parents and volunteers: On my honor, I will follow these rules while participating in the Cookie Program. I will dress in a manner appropriate for a Girl Scout function. I will speak positive, encouraging words to girls. I will stand quietly and let girls talk to the customers. I will encourage girls to tell customers about their goals. I will help ensure the safety of the girls and money collected. I will follow any rules the store requires. Welcome to the 2017–2018 Girl Scout Cookie Program The Girl Scout Cookie Program® is important to girls, their troops, and Girl Scouts of Colorado. The pro- gram provides funds to support activities such as Girl Scout events, trips, camping, and service projects. For GSCO, the program provides funds to recruit and train adult volunteers, organize Girl Scout groups, provide council-wide programs such as science and career workshops, and provide financial assistance so all girls have access to the opportunities Girl Scouting offers.
