Washington County Adult Education (WCACE) and Axiom Education & Train- ing Center (AETC) promotes lifelong learning through academic instruction, training, and professional development to community members, businesses, and industries in Washington County and beyond. Classes provide opportu- nities for professional growth, personal enrichment, computer skills improve- ment, and preparation for college and professional careers in a supportive environment. WCACE is the Maine Department of Education sanctioned Adult and Career Development program for Washington County and a member of the downeast region Adult Education HUB#1 serving Washington and Hancock counties. WCACE is a member of the Maine Adult Education Association (MAEA), the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE), and partners with organizations like Sunrise County Economic Council, Family Futures Downeast, Downeast Community Partners, Washington County Community College, University of Maine Machias, Maine Indian Education, and the Passamaquoddy tribe.

These are FREE Classes. ABE Math/Pre-Algebra: Covers basic whole number math, fractions, decimals, percents, and simple geometry. Pre-HiSET Social Studies: Explore US History, World History, Economics, US Government, and Geography. Reading Skills: Enhance reading skills to make reading easier and more under- standable. High School Completion Earn credits through our High School Diploma Program or through completion of the HiSET tests. Meet with a student advisor to explore your options and start your education plan. High School Diploma Program Our diploma program gives you the opportunity to pick up where you left off in high school. Students wishing to enroll in the high school diploma program must be the appropriate age and have successfully passed previous prerequisite courses. All course materials are provided. Courses may be taught online, in-person, or blended. Cost: FREE High School English: Grades 9-12 English, meeting the requirements for graduation. 45 hours per class for application credit. Social Studies: Grades 9-12 Social Studies, meeting the requirements for graduation. 45 hours per class for application credit. Pre-Algebra: This high school credit course introduces students of mathematics to an understanding of and appreciation for mathematical principles required for future success in Algebra. Skills and experience are developed in topics of: Whole numbers, Introduction to integers and algebraic expressions, Fraction notation – multiplication and division, Fraction notation – addition, subtraction, and mixed numbers, Decimal notation, Introduction to graphing and statistics, Ratio and proportion, Geometry and measurement. Algebra I: This high school credit course introduces students of mathematics to the understanding of and appreciation for abstract concepts in algebra. Skills and experience are developed in topics of: Integers and Real Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, and Algebraic Expressions, Solving Equations and Inequalities, Graphing Linear Equations in Two Variables, Systems of Linear Equations, Exponents and Polynomials, Factoring Polynomials and Solving Quadratic Equations, Rational Expressions, Real Numbers and Radicals, and Quadratic Equations. Algebra II: This high school credit course introduces students of mathematics to further understanding of and appreciation for abstract concepts in algebra. Skills and experience are developed in the topics of: Linear Equations, Inequalities, Graphs, Matrices, Polynomials and all Radical Expressions, Quadratic Equations, Functions, Exponential and Logarithmic Equations, and an Introduction to Higher Order Functions. 2
Geometry: This high school credit course introduces students of mathematics to a visual and numerical study of shapes, sizes, patterns and positions used in five strands of human activities: Building/structure (building/repairing a house, laying out a garden, making a kit,…), Machines/motion (using a pry-bar, riding a bike, sawing a board, swinging,…), Navigating, stargazing (how do I get from here to there?, using maps…), Art/patterns (designs, symmetries, representations…), and Measurement (how big is it?, how far is it?...). Exploratory Science: This high school credit course introduces students to a general overview of five topics in science: Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and The Universe. Biology: This high school credit course covers topics of Biology, including: A View of Life: Structure and Function, Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems, Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems, Inheritance and Variation of Traits, Natural Selection and Evolution, and Student Portfolio. Chemistry: This high school credit course covers topics of Chemistry, including: Chemistry: The Central Science, Atoms, Molecules, and Ions, Stoichiometry: Ratios of Combinations, Reactions in Aqueous Solutions, Thermochemistry, and Student Portfolio. Other Courses: Art, Physical Education, and Elective Courses arranged with the student’s interests in mind, working with their instructor. Past offerings have included Astronomy, Creating a Video from PowerPoint (Project: The Battle of Machias in the Revolutionary War), and fitness through Biking the Bold Coast. 3
HiSET High School Equivalency Test The HiSET credential is earned by passing a series of five tests: • ELA Reading • ELA Writing • Math • Science • Social Studies Our Instructors assess student skill levels and arrange for testing or test prep, either online, one-on-one, or in a small class setting. Locations: HiSET Prep is offered in person at various locations in Washington County, including our office in Machias, Lubec Community Outreach Center (LCOC), Indian Township, and several libraries. English as a Second Language WCACE/AETC is offering: • English classes • One-on-One Tutoring • Driver’s License study classes • Citizenship study classes This one-on-one or group class is available to anyone who wants to begin or continue learning English. Computer Support Specialist Program Do you enjoy working with computers? Have you considered a career in IT? Computer Support Specialists provide technical support for users, companies, and/or organizations. You will learn to navigate the computer, workplace skills, basic IT infrastructure and networking, basic security skills, and troubleshoot- ing and problem solving. This micro-credential is offered through a collabora- tion and has 3 levels – foundational, training, and experience. You will receive industry recognized credentials in WorkReady, Northstar Digital Literacy, IC3 and CompTIAA+, while having the opportunity to earn up to 9 college credits. This program is free to qualifying individuals. College Prep The class prepares you for college by refreshing math, English reading & writing, study skills, and introduces students to college life, stress & time management, digital literacy and career advising. Family Futures Downeast WCACE/AETC offers College Prep and Tutoring for Family Futures Downeast (FFD), a two-generation program for parents with young children to attend college at the same time their children receive early childhood education. Parents and families are given many supports to help ensure they complete their college level work and continue toward a certificate or degree from either Washington County Community College or University of Maine Machias. FFD is a collaboration of 6 Washington County organizations including WCCC and UMM, Community Caring Collaborative, Downeast Community Partners, Sunrise County Economic Council, and WCACE/AETC. Resumes & Cover Letters Whether you are looking for a new job in your current career path or just start- ing out in the job market, a solid resume and cover letter will help land you the interview and give you a leg up on other applicants. Our new mini-course is a short, self-directed online class with the option to meet one-on-one with Instructor Valerie Lawson to fine tune your resume and cover letters. As a CRMA you can work in assisted living or group homes administrating medications. This is a great training to either get you started in the health care profession or advance your skills. This will be an online class except for the mock med pass at the end. Class Dates & Times: Fall 2021 Personal Service Specialist (PSS) Training Are you interested in the medical field? This 50-hour class will teach you basic care and the rules and regulations need-ed to work in an assisted living or group home as a Personal Service Specialist. Behavior Health Professional (BHP) Certification Training Our community is looking for individuals who want to make a difference in a child’s life. As an integral part of the child’s treatment team, a Certified Be- havioral Health Professional (BHP) has the opportunity to make an immediate impact while helping a child grow and develop to their full potential. Office Assistant Program AETC Office Assistant is a year-long training program that will lead to Micro-Credentialing in the skills, knowledge, and techniques necessary to serve as an Office Manager or Administrative Assistant in any business situation. Students will earn official Google Applied Digital Skills, WorkReady, and Quickbooks Certifications, and train to prepare for Microsoft’s own IC3 Windows and Office Certifications. The course will be delivered in Hybrid fashion which will include independent Internet-directed computer work and “Face-to-Face” scheduled classes delivered through video conferencing software. National Digital Equity Center The National Digital Equity Center is a DBA of Axiom Education & Training Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Machias, Maine.
