SUBJECT SELECTION OVERVIEW

Course Planning
When planning your Year 12 Subject Selection for 2022, keep the following in mind:
  • The subjects you take in Year 12 impact on the subjects you have access to in Year 13
  • If you have a particular career in mind, research the requirements to ensure your subject
      choices create a pathway to get there
  • If you are unsure remember you have the following people you can talk to:

Your Year 12 Course

   •   A Year 12 course consists of six subjects
   •   All students are required to take a course in English, you will be placed in the appropriate
       classes by your teachers based upon your performance in Year 11
   •   Students will also take five other subjects

Selecting your Subject Choices

Your subject selection will be made via on the Parent Portal. The Parent Portal can be accessed
via the ‘Quick Links’ menu on our school webpage or directly via the following address:
https://parentportal.feildinghigh.school.nz

We will try to fulfil the wishes of students and their whānau in selecting subjects, but the school
reserves the right to limit or modify classes according to:
    • The ability and needs of the student
    • Available staffing, resources and timetable restrictions.

Course Confirmation

Your course will be confirmed at re-enrolment Wednesday 26th January 2022, between 10am and
1pm in the Library.

Your acceptance into a subject for 2022 will depend on your 2021 NCEA results.

AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE                                                                               12AGR

This course examines the commercial production of agriculture in NZ. Students will study livestock growth
and development, including a practical investigation. Factors that determine land use and environmental
impacts of farming systems are also covered. This course leads to 13 Agricultural and Horticultural Science.

12 or more credits from 11 Agriculture or at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge.

• This course includes up to three field trips (2½ days).

Entry Requirements
Year 11 Visual Art, 11 Design and Visual Communication or 8 credits from 11 English.

Course Outline / Key Topics Covered
Art Design is a digital graphic design course. Students will learn to use Adobe creative software such
as Photoshop and InDesign to create digital artworks using the design process. Students will create
a range of branding and marketing material within a context of their own choosing. Assignments
are styled to suit each students’ strengths and interests (e.g., drawing, photography, typography,
painting, digital illustration, street art etc) as well as tailored to their stylistic preferences within
Visual Art.

13 Art Design is an Approved Subject for University Entrance.
This course aims to introduce processes and procedures in contemporary graphic design and
prepare students for further study in graphic design, advertising, marketing and/or tertiary study
in design, visual communication or creative courses such as Fine Arts.

Art Painting gives students the opportunity to develop their skills with an individual
programme of work using contemporary artists within a context of their own choosing.
The course is designed to suit individual strengths and interests.
Students can work with a variety of mixed media, including printmaking and digital artwork.

14 credits from Year 11 Technology Hard Materials. Selection is also dependent on students being
able to demonstrate both the necessary technical skills and a thorough understanding of health and
safety in the workshop.

Entry Requirements
12 credits from 11DVC.

Course Outline / Key Topics Covered
12DVC builds on the foundations of 11DVC. It requires more in-depth undertaking of graphics
practice, quality freehand and instrumental drawings, and the presentation of design and visual
communication techniques. They will also learn 3D Modelling and the use of Virtual Reality in
design. Students will complete design brief-based projects in areas of spatial, engineering and
media design.

Students are directed into the course as required. This program is designed for students who have
achieved EL Level 3 and for language learners commencing a pathway to tertiary study. The Level 3
EAP (English for Academic Purpose) unit standards are for language learners who have achieved
English language Level 3 unit standards.

GATEWAY (Structured Workplace Learning)                                            12GAT
This is a programme that offers Year 12 students the opportunity to trial, in the workplace, their
probable career choice. It involves learning and assessment in the workplace as well as school-
based Unit Standards.
Entry Requirements
Students who wish to apply for a place in this course must meet the following criteria:
• Be working at Level 2 in their other subjects.
• Have 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy credits.
• Be prepared to attend the First Aid course in the week before school starts.
• Have shown a strong commitment to a particular career choice through previous subject
       selection, work experience, or career planning e.g. Year 10 Learning and Careers Plan.
Students must make application for Year 12 Gateway. They will be interviewed for selection.
Acceptance into the course will depend on the availability of a suitable work placement.
Students are encouraged to find their own workplace or attempt to approach an employer
before their interview.

Workplace Requirements
It is anticipated that students will work one day per week for 20 weeks. (Terms 2 and 3). This

This course is intended to lead students into the workplace or to further training such as a pre-
apprenticeship course.
13 Gateway is offered to students based on their performance in 12 Gateway.
Special Conditions of Subject
• Students will be interviewed prior to being offered a place in this course.
• During Terms 2 and 3, students will spend one day a week in one workplace. Subjects
    missed on that day must be caught up in a subsequent Gateway lesson.
• Students may only take one of Primary Industries, Gateway or U-Skills.

Subject Progression
• Entry to 13 Agricultural and Horticultural Science may be possible by negotiation with the Teacher in
    Charge. This will be based upon the student’s other academic subjects at year 12.
• At the successful completion of 12 Primary Industries students may qualify for NZ Certificate in Primary
    Industry Skills Level 2. To achieve this, students will need to have gained a minimum of 40 credits over Year
    11 and 12.
Special Conditions
• Students will be required to complete work experience one day per week from mid Term 1 to the end of

   Students learn advanced construction skills in order to construct a garment featuring at
   least two of them. They include:
   • Style features, such as set in sleeve, fly front, tailored collars and cuffs, welt pockets
        and/or decorative features such as pin tucking, embroidery, and shirring

   Sustainable Fashion: Students work with a client to upcycle garments.
   • You will individually research, design and construct textile items for a client, presenting a
       solution to meet their needs.

Staff will recommend students for this course. Recommendations will be given to the Special
Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who will liaise with the Dean to enter students in this course.

Course Outline / Key Topics Covered
This is a predominantly practical course which is individualised for each student.
The course may include:
• Practical life skills such as cooking for flatting, household management
• Work experience
• Constructive use of leisure time
• Interpersonal skills training
• Working towards individual goals set at an IEP

Outside agencies such as CCS Disability Action, Enable, Family Planning Association and WINZ
may be invited to contribute to the course as the need arises.

Assessment
There is no formal assessment, though feedback to parents / caregivers is provided at both
Transition Meetings and IEP meetings.

Learning Outcomes
Students will increase their awareness of the skills they will need as they move from school to
life beyond school.

Fees
A contribution towards outings and materials may be requested as the need occurs.
