Christmas is only the first step Everyone should have a place to call home. Yet every day we see the devastating impact homelessness has on people’s lives and our communities. Each year we work alongside thousands of people, helping them rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind. We also campaign for the social changes that will end homelessness for good. With decades of experience helping people rebuild their lives, we understand everyone is different, and there are different reasons people are pushed into homelessness. We treat each person with dignity and offer them the specific help they need to take their first steps out of homelessness. Em’s story With a background of broken relationships and an abusive childhood, Em ended up sleeping rough. “I came to Crisis over Christmas when I had been sleeping on buses. It was amazing to have a bed to sleep in, and people who were helpful and kind. “I was given a Crisis coach who gave me a huge amount of support. I could trust her. She advised me on benefits and housing, as well as being there to talk to, which greatly helped my mental health. “Then I met a lady who let me stay rent free. In lockdown I ended up sleeping in her van. But it started to leak and I was cold. My Crisis coach alerted the council who put me in emergency accommodation because of Covid. “My coach has shown me how to keep hope alive, keep faith alive. She saved my life.” With help from her coach, Em is now renting in a shared house, learning new skills and looking to work in outreach or to teach people how to grow food. 5
It doesn’t stop at Christmas Thanks to you, Crisis at Christmas gives countless people their first steps out of homelessness. But our work doesn’t end there. People who come to Crisis at Christmas are connected to long-term support and our one to one coaches are a vital part of this. Each coach is an expert in helping people identify their goals, as well as their strengths and how they can use them in the future. They work with people to build their resilience so they never become homeless again. By Making it Crisis this Christmas, you’ll be supporting our year-round work to: “I can look • Help people leave temporary forward to accommodation and secure a permanent home the future • Provide advice and practical help to people now, thanks newly facing homelessness to Crisis.” • Give people the support they need to keep their homes – including their mental Henry health, wellbeing, work and benefits • Call for governments to commit to ensuring everyone has a safe and settled home • Support local organisations to provide permanent housing through a grants scheme. We believe an end to homelessness is possible, but only if we work together to make it happen. Every donation you raise, no matter the size, will help make sure there’s a home for all. Thank you! Your fundraising could mean everything to someone who’s homeless Lloyd’s story Last winter during lockdown, with temperatures falling and cases of coronavirus soaring, Lloyd had nowhere to take shelter. “It was raining and getting cold. With coronavirus out there, I was even more anxious. My lung condition made me more vulnerable. I wasn’t in a good place.” Then Lloyd heard about his local Crisis Skylight centre. “I made my way to the Skylight and it felt like a huge weight was lifted. A Crisis coach explained what they do and how they would get me off the streets into somewhere safe. There was a light at the end of the tunnel.” Over Christmas, Lloyd was given his own room in a hotel run by Crisis. He had good food and a smartphone to connect with Crisis for advice on housing and benefits. “I was so grateful for the roof over my head, the food, the hospitality, and the kindness. But to get a knock on the door on Christmas morning and get a Christmas card and a small present wrapped up. To have nothing, then be bombarded with love from complete strangers, it was unbelievable!” With ongoing support from Crisis, Lloyd moved into a permanent home. “Crisis was a lifeline I never knew existed, a godsend. Every morning I give thanks for what I have now” Every £29.06 you raise could give warmth, food and safety, plus a whole new start for someone who’s homeless7 this Christmas.
