MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR / DR. JORDAN SINZ

                                 2022 – Much Lies Ahead

The new year brings a tremendous opportunity to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. In the
world of a district administrator, it also means that one-half of the year is over and, in my case, the mid-
point of year number five in the Wisconsin Heights School District. What an incredible experience this
has been. Collectively, we have many things to celebrate, and we also have some incredibly important
  district-level items that await.

    • The district's facility project continues to move along. Roof decking has been recently placed, and
metal framing will be going up soon. It is exciting to think about our future as a combined
campus. This will undoubtedly enhance our ability to collaborate as a district staff and be a
tremendous convenience to families who otherwise may have to commute between three different
buildings. Stakeholders can follow the progress on our webpage at:
https://www.wisheights.k12.wi.us/planning-updates/. Additionally, updates are provided in-person at
each School Board Meeting. The WHSD Board meets on the second and fourth Monday of the
month. Our next Board Meeting will be on Monday, January 10. The meetings start at 6:00 PM
and are held in the STEP room. The STEP room is located in the middle/high school facility and is
directly inside the main entrance. We will continue to share information as the process unfolds.

    • Everyone associated with the Wisconsin Heights School District should be extremely proud of the
student learning that has and will continue to take place in our district. As a part of our 2020-21 DPI
report card, our district's academic standing was compared to the other 420 districts in
Wisconsin. Our academic achievement placed Wisconsin Heights in the top 16% of districts
statewide. Furthermore, our student growth placed us in the top 18% of districts in Wisconsin.
We were able to maintain high levels of achievement and growth during the 20-21 school year – even
in the midst of tremendous challenges. I have no doubt this outstanding performance will carry on
because I get to witness our students and staff doing amazing things firsthand.

It is these items that I take with me as we enter into the 2022 calendar year. I encourage you to share my
excitement for the Wisconsin Heights School District. We are doing great things, and I see many
phenomenal things ahead. Together, we will ensure that our school system is one of excellence.

I hope you are in the midst of enjoying a wonderful Holiday with your family and friends! School will be
back in session on January 3, 2022. We are together on the journey of providing an educational
experience of distinct quality! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 608-767-2595 (office),
  608-370-3997 (cell), or jsinz@wisheights.k12.wi.us.

A new year is upon us! We are looking forward to a great rest of the school year and are excited to see what
2022 will bring us! We are looking ahead with our batteries fully charged and ready to get back to it!
Adult School Crossing Guard Week
Wisconsin’s Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week will be held the week of January 17-21,
2022. Our school is incredibly fortunate to have Dale Clason safely cross students on the corner of Center
Street and Park Street each day! If you see Dale during this week, make sure to let her know that her work is
very appreciated!
Cold Weather Clothing
Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather. Even though there is no snow on the ground,
snow pants help keep your child warm! You can help avoid items being lost by labeling coats, snow pants,
mittens, and hats for easy identification should they become lost. Also, just a reminder that school starts at
7:50 AM and students can be dropped off between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. There are no staff members available to
watch children until 7:30. With the temperatures getting cooler in the mornings, we want to keep students safe
and not be left unattended.

Happy New Year!

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is going well at Mazomanie Elementary. We practice
our expectations when needed and our students are being recognized for their efforts with Gotcha and Golden
Tickets regarding expected behaviors at school. We are proud of our students and their efforts regarding
“Being Respectful, Being Responsible, and Being Safe.”

Ask your students about PBIS at school. We welcome any parent feedback regarding our program. The PBIS
website at www.pbis.org offers information as well as parent tips to use at home if you are interested.

Our students and staff continue to pursue academic growth in all areas with specific growth goals in the area
of literacy with an emphasis on vocabulary this year. We presented our school improvement goals to our
school board in November. In January, our students will complete our mid-year assessments to track our
specific progress. We are looking forward to a wonderful start in 2022!

Best wishes for a safe and healthy 2022!

Middle School/High School
The New Year brings with it some changes in our intervention approach at the Middle School and a change in
instructional delivery for our Business Education program.

Changes to MS Intervention Programming:
  • Lab model
 For Spring semester 2022, we will offer three Math Labs and three Literacy Labs. Math labs will
be organized by grade level (6, 7, and 8), while Literacy Labs can be mixed grades.
 In Math Lab, students will have pre-teaching of upcoming content, strategic tutoring with current
grade-level assignments with acceleration, or backfilling of needed skills as they are encountered
           in the grade-level work.
 In Literacy Lab, students will work with grade-level content in Social Studies and Science. This
will be set up as stations; this arrangement allows for mixing grade levels. Text work will expose
students to key texts students will encounter in Social Studies or Science. Word work will focus
on using vocabulary from the text/discipline. The Summary Station will center on student
           mastering summarizing/paraphrasing, analysis, and synthesis.

   • Identification system
 Students will be referred to the labs using three criteria:
             ▪ Teacher recommendation.
             ▪ Test scores.
             ▪ Present level of performance.

   • Staffing
 We will discontinue intervention in its current form.
 Amye Johnson will staff the six Labs for Spring 2022.

Changes to Business Programming:
Ms. LaSavage resigned, and her last day is 1/7/2022. We did not have any applicants for the Business
Education position. While we will repost the Business Education position for the 22-23 school year, this is
what we will be doing for the second semester:

Class Period Course Title Plan

1 Personal Finance Contract with MATC for an online/blended course.

2 Web Design Offer Wisconsin Virtual School Web Design Class.

4 Computer 8 Replace course with Introduction to Culinary with
                                                 Ms. Bilskemper.
7 Computers 6 Ms. Statz will teach.

8 Microsoft Office Contract with MATC for online courses: Microsoft
Office Word and Microsoft Office PowerPoint.

HS Students in the elective Business Courses (not Personal Finance as it is a graduation requirement) will also
have the opportunity to take a different course that we offer on campus. Mr. Wong and Ms. Shaffer will be
meeting with students in the next two weeks to work on these changes.

Notes from the Nurse
KATY HOWE, School Nurse

I want to thank the Wisconsin Heights community for making our two vaccine clinics so successful. Three
hundred doses of the COVID vaccine were given between the two vaccine clinics and I’m hoping that will
help protect many in our community from the likely surge due to the Omicron variant. We are seeing high
levels of COVID in our community and have started to see quite a few cases of Omicron in Dane
county. Once the new variant has been identified in an area it has quickly taken over because it can spread
more quickly. It does look like the vaccine is working well against Omicron to prevent severe disease and
death. Vaccines remain the best public health measure to protect people from COVID-19, slow
transmission, and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging. Consistent masking in the community
will also be important this winter to help reduce the impact of the new Omicron variant.

Due to the success of our previous vaccine clinics, and the request from many to hold another one, we were
able to contract with WI DHS and AMI again to hold a 3rd vaccine clinic.

Vaccine Clinic
January 4th, 2022 from 3:00 - 8:00 PM
Black Earth Elementary

All doses of the COVID vaccine will be available. We are hoping to get second doses to those who need
them and boosters to 16 and 17 year olds since those are now available. Boosters and first doses will also be
available to students, families, and community members. More information will be out before the vaccine
clinic, including a registration link to make an appointment.

Admissions officials look at:
  • High school rank in class and GPA (grade point average) and the strength of a student’s courses over
    all four high school years.
  • ACT and/or SAT scores.
  • School and community activities.
  • Teacher recommendations, if required.
  • Student essays, if required.
  • Overall quality of student effort in preparing the application – following directions, proper spelling,
    typing or neat handwriting, etc.

UW Universities/Colleges: Application priority dates and deadlines vary from campus to campus and
sometimes among different programs at one campus. It is to your advantage to apply early! If you have
any questions, please contact Mr. Wong or the institution to which you are applying.

The UW System has an enrollment management policy that limits the number of students each campus can
accommodate. Specific programs may also have enrollment limits. Even applicants who meet minimum
admission requirements may not be admitted. You may use the UW System Application for Undergraduate
Admission to apply to any UW campus. Several items must be submitted to complete your application file.
  • A $25 application fee must be paid to each campus to which you apply with the exception of
UW Madison ($60). In cases of exceptional need, the application fee may be waived. Contact your
     counselor for details.
  • An official copy of your high school transcript. If you have completed any college course work,
you must also have an official transcript sent from each college or university attended.
  • ACT or SAT test scores currently optional at many schools. Some admission offices require an
official score report directly from the testing agency before evaluating an application.
  • Visit https://apply.wisconsin.edu and use the UW System online application for admission.

The Admission Decision – High school seniors notified of admission before finishing their senior year are
expected to graduate, successfully complete course work in progress at the time they applied and maintain
the class rank required for admission. UW System institutions reserve the right to rescind admission if a
student fails to meet conditions on which admission was based.

MATC will start processing applications as soon as they receive them. You will need to look up the
specific programs you are applying to because prerequisites vary. You will also be able to find out if there
is a waiting list or not. From the Madison College homepage http://madisoncollege.edu/ click on the Apply
for Admission button. Madison College’s online application is secure and easy to use:
   • Save your work and come back to it later.
   • Receive immediate notification of receipt via e-mail.
   • No delay – application processing starts right away.

Some programs may have unique admission requirements or early such as assessment test scores, course
requirements, or early admission deadlines. From the Madison College homepage, click on the link
to “Programs of Study” and find your program to check for any additional requirements.

College/Technical School Applications
Students should email Ms. Shaffer in order to have a transcript sent to any school they are applying.
At the present time there is no charge to have a transcript sent. Once the request is received, the Guidance
Department will mail the transcript out. Get your college applications in as soon as possible.

Cyber Safety
DEBBIE SCHMIDT, Mental Health/Student Support

Cyber Safety: Children’s increased online presence may put them at greater risk of child exploitation.
Parents, guardians, caregivers, and teachers can take the following measures to help protect children from
becoming victims of online child predators.

Discuss internet safety and develop an online safety plan with children before they engage in online
activity. Establish clear guidelines, teach children to spot red flags, and encourage children to have open
communication with you.

Supervise children’s use of the internet, including periodically checking their profiles and posts. Keep
electronic devices in open, common areas of the home and consider setting time limits for their use.

Review games, apps, and social media sites before they are downloaded or used by children. Pay
particular attention to apps and sites that feature end-to-end encryption, direct messaging, video chats, file
uploads, and user anonymity, which are frequently relied upon by online child predators.

Adjust privacy settings and use parental controls for online games, apps, social medial sites, and
electronic devices.

Tell children to avoid sharing personal information, photos, and videos online in public forums or with
people they do not know in real life. Explain to your children that images posted online will be permanently
on the internet.

Teach children about body safety and boundaries, including the importance of saying ‘no’ to
inappropriate requests both in the physical world and the virtual world.

Be alert to potential signs of abuse, including changes in children’s use of electronic devices, attempts to
conceal online activity, withdrawn behavior, angry outbursts, anxiety, and depression.

Encourage children to tell a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult if anyone asks them to engage in
sexual activity or other inappropriate behavior.

Immediately report suspected online enticement or sexual exploitation of a child by calling 911,
contacting the FBI at tips.fbi.gov, or filing a report with the National Center for Missing & Exploited
Children (NCMEC) at 1-800-843-5678 or report.cybertip.org. Source: US Dept of Justice

Digital Citizenship Tips and Tricks!
Children in this digital age spend between 5 to 9 hours of total screen time, which can include gaming,

together (e.g., family dinner) and media-free zones (e.g., bedrooms). Children should not sleep with devices
in their bedrooms, including TVs, computers, and smartphones.”

Notes from the Music Department

Happy January Wisconsin Heights Elementary Families!

We have had a wonderful first semester at both Mazomanie Elementary and Black Earth! Students at Black
Earth have been listening and singing many holiday and winter songs. Students at Mazomanie Elementary
have been hard at work reading and writing music notation. We have also been listening to music from
Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Ballet,” and our Fifth graders have been hard at work learning the ukulele!
We so far have learned four chords and are playing along with the song “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley!

Third graders from Mrs. Gullickson’s Third Grade Class playing a hand
clapping game along with the song “Trepak” from “The Nutcracker.”

Fifth graders played ukulele in pairs!

I wish you all a wonderful and safe winter holiday!

Mrs. Sternberg

Happy New Year! We finished 2021 on a “high note” with our long-awaited indoor performances by the
middle/high school bands and choirs last month. For some student musicians, they hadn’t participated in an
indoor concert since 2019. Thank you to everyone who came out to show
their support of the Music Department at Wisconsin Heights!

Around the World in 80 Trays | January 18 to 21, 2021

The Around the World in 80 Trays campaign aims to increase international flavors in USDA School Meals
Programs! Food can do more than just nourish the body, but it can also offer an invitation to participate in
and explore the many diverse cultures of Wisconsin students. Join us in this week-long culinary adventure,
kicking off after Martin Luther King Jr. Day. What better way to celebrate the unique cultural backgrounds
of students across this great state than by remembering the legacy of MLK Jr. and his dream of equality and
inclusion for everyone.
