Sheffield City Hall EVENTS GUIDE September – October 2018 Live Music | Comedy | Entertainment This Autumn we celebrate icons of all generations with Cliff Richard on his 60th Anniversary tour, Joanna Lumley with tales from the Bond silver screen, two classic Elvis concerts, Grammy Award winning Michael Bolton’s classic hits and we remember Sheffield legend Joe Cocker. 2018 is 60 years since Buddy Holly & The Crickets performed at City Hall on their one and only UK tour and we mark this anniversary with Buddy Holly & his Buddies in September. We’ve the perfect intimate setting for live comedy with award winning stand up and live shows from The League of Gentlemen, the ever evolving Jimeoin, story spinner Ross Noble, the effortlessly funny Joe Lycett, always honest Sara Pascoe and the fascinating Dylan Moran! October sees the start of the Sheffield International Concert Season 2018/19 where we are joined by two international orchestras, The Hallé and Russian State Symphony Orchestra. To celebrate the 60th Anniversary year of this historic musical event, Buddy Holly’s music once again will be rocking the City Hall in this brand new show. 2018 also marks the 60th Anniversary of Cliff Richard & The Shadows, ‘Buddy Holly and his Buddies’ features a homage to our very own Bachelor boy and his band, featuring bassist Alan Jones who was the bass guitarist of The Shadows from 1977 to 1990! 9 Friday 5th October | 7pm The Hallé Tickets: £21, £19, £16* Students & Under 18s: £5* Venue: Oval Hall The Hallé opens the Sheffield International Concert Season with Laura van der Heijden and Karl-Heinz Steffens for what is simply the greatest cello concerto of them all, that of Dvorák. Packed with both melodies and virtuosity, when Brahms heard it for the first time he was astonished, wishing he could have written it himself. After the interval is Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, his greatest achievement in orchestral music. Its finale, a magnificent set Karl-Heinz Steffens conductor of variations, is perhaps the most remarkable Laura van der Heijden cello part of this most remarkable and moving work. From its famous opening waltz, Moscow-based Khachaturian’s Masquerade Suite attractively reflects its composer’s Armenian roots.
