During the plenary session of the last EAAP annual meeting (available on the EAAP YouTube channel), Anne Mottet (FAO) clearly showed that animal production must grow to support the future needs of humanity. Still animal production is under general accusation mainly for environmental and ethical reasons. Although production demands will have to increase, animal husbandry in Western countries could have difficulties imposed by rules requested by a public opinion that considers it negative for environmental and ethical reasons. Consequently, the sciences dealing with animal production are denigrated by public opinion and often considered, at best, only “opinions” and not appreciated for resolving future crises. However, science in general is highly regarded and it is widely believed that science and its methods have something special. In fact, when we say that a reasoning is “scientific”, we want to give it a very special trustworthiness and authority. But what’s so special about science? Surely scientific knowledge is authoritative and reliable because it is proven knowledge, that is, it’s theories derive from empirical facts acquired through observation and experimentation. It should be very easy to distinguish science from pseudo-science (such as astrology for example) and non-science (such as art). In fact, this reasoning brings us back to the scientific method as defined and spread widely, starting with Kepler and Galileo. But then why do the animal sciences not seem to have the same scientific aura of other sciences, such as physics? Why is it not recognized that thanks to new technologies farmed animals often live with better welfare and produce less GHG in countries with advanced animal husbandry than in developing countries? Maybe because animal husbandry creates primary goods that have always been part of our life and to which we are often historically and idealistically linked, and the modern style animal husbandry that our science advocates clashes with this. In fact, while everyone would prefer to be treated by a doctor of 2221 rather than by a doctor of 2021 and would never want to be treated by a doctor of 1821, the prospect of eating products of the past continues to be very tempting. After finishing the PhD in 2015 Stefanie moved to Switzerland and worked as EAAP People Portrait researcher at the Department of Animal Sciences at the research institute of organic agriculture (FiBL) in Frick. During the years at FiBL she could Stefanie Ammer further expand on her knowledge in animal welfare sciences in different animal species under organic conditions and the Swiss agriculture – characterized by a particular emphasis on high welfare standards. Currently, Stefanie works at the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Göttingen in the division of livestock systems. Her research focuses on the effects on animal welfare, behavior and health with a special focus on external effects as climatic or housing conditions. Since the EAAP conference in Nantes in 2013, she was attending the congress regularly! Especially the multiplied activities of the young EAAP Club attracted her particularly and gave her the great opportunity starting to build an international network among the young scientists! That’s why she also decided in 2019 to apply for a secretary position in the health and welfare commission, which Stefanie is supporting since then.
