Dissemination is not only a matter for animal science societies or publishers of scientific magazines, but above all a responsibility for scientists both as authors/speakers and readers/audience. The current pandemic demanded that we use technologies that were already available but that we did not fully use. This was possible because of the scale and pace of technological change. The industry of science dissemination is changing rapidly. Sometimes we feel scared about this. Yes, some things are fading away, but so much more is being created. In the western world traditional newspapers saw circulation fall on average by 4% year on year and many of them disappeared. But news isn’t disappearing. It’s shifting. It’s not on paper, it’s on our phone. That raises many considerations, but we are wrong to see it as decline. Often, what stops us developing along with the technologies is fear. Not personal fear of losing our jobs but a kind of professional fear of actively destroying the past for an uncertain future. The Kodak example is famous. The new digital technology didn’t pass Kodak by. Kodak invented the digital camera and had the patents. Kodak had everything needed except the vision to see that they weren’t in the film and chemicals business, they were in the picture business. Finally, the Kodak mindset was not the preservation of Kodak, it was its end. Others filled the gap they could have occupied. This experience tells us that the formula for success is renewal, not maintaining the same old position. This is an exciting moment for science dissemination and it is about enjoying the chance to re-invent the process. Although doing something new is natural it also carries with it the fear of failure. But occasional failures are inevitable by-products of risk-taking and renewal or even an essential part of the process. Success breeds confidence, but failure breeds learning. We must be free of the constraints that make sense for day-to-day activity and make every effort to do things differently. Andrea Rosati
