About the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative The GSBI was founded in 2011 by an international group of scientists with the overriding mission to promote expert knowledge on soil biodiversity into environmental policy and sustainable land management to protect and enhance ecosystem services. In order to facilitate this, they run a number of events one of which will be hosted in Dublin in November 2021. Inaugural contributing organizations European Commission, Joint Research Centre The University of Manchester-Faculty of Life Sciences, UK ETH Zurich, Group on Sustainable Agroecosystems, Switzerland The Netherlands Institute of Ecology and Wageningen Center for Soil Ecology, The Netherlands Colorado State University, School of Global Environmental Sustainability, Colorado, USA GSBI Leadership Luca Montanrellla, European Commission, Joint Research Diana H. Objectives of Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) What are our goals? The Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative is a grassroots scientific collaboration of nearly 4,000 members from 126 countries, seeking to promote the best available scientific knowledge of soil biodiversity and associated ecosystem functions to inform environmental policy at a global scale. What do we do? • Empower research collaborations and networks globally • Leverage knowledge from different disciplines for real world impact • Amplify diverse voices in science and education to develop strategies for innovative and sustainable use of soils and their biodiversity • Foster an open and welcoming community of people poised to be tomorrow’s solution-innovators We do this by: • Providing input to the Intergovernmental Science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) on soil biodiversity loss and impacts on ecosystem services • Establishing a central focus of connecting cross-biome research to the Global Soil Partnership for incorporating scientific knowledge on soil biodiversity and ecosystem services • Participating in global research collaborations, such as the Soil Biodiversity Observation Network (SoilBON) • Enabling knowledge-exchange between researchers and stakeholders to establish research and policy agendas • Developing scenarios on how soil biodiversity, and the services it provides, will respond to climate change • Identifying research and education gaps in disciplines interfacing with soil biodiversity science, such as human, animal, and plant health • Presenting evidence and case studies from international regions to policy-makers to develop solutions in which conservation and improvement of soil biodiversity is integral to human well-being. 3 Gather New Knowledge - Foster Collaborations
Our Actions to date! GSBI has contributed to, and provided expert review for the following: • 2020: GSBI, Global Soil Partnership are partners in producing the FAO Global Soil Biodiversity Assessment Report for the CBD - STATE OF KNOWLEDGE OF SOIL BIODIVERSITY • 2018: European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) Opportunities for soil sustainability in Europe • 2018: Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Assessment Report on Land Degradation & Restoration • 2017: UN Convention to Combat Desertification • 2017: European Food Safety Authority - Scientific Opinion addressing the state of the science on risk assessment of plant protection products for in-soil organisms • 2016: In a joint venture from the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative and the EU European Commission Joint Research Centre, the Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas was produced which is the first synthesis of global soil biodiversity research and its importance to our living world. https://www. globalsoilbiodiversity.org/atlas-introduction • 2015: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Food and Status of the World’s Soil Resources: Main Report 4 Meet Experts - Generate New Ideas - Network Internationally

Affiliated Organisations • Ecological Society of America Soil Ecology Section • EC-JRC: European Commission Joint Research Centre • Global Initiative of Crop Microbiome and Sustainable Agriculture • GLUSEEN: Global Urban Soil Ecology and Education Network • GSP: Global Soil Partnership • ISMC: International Soil Modeling Consortium • Microbial Ecology Section of the Ecological Society of America (ESA) • SAMRN: South American Mycorrhizal Research Network • Soil BON: Soil Biodiversity Observation Network • SSSC: Soil Science Society of China 5 Gather New Knowledge - Foster Collaborations
Why Attend? The Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative, launched in 2011, is a major stakeholder in the development of soil biodiversity policy, and the accelerating scientific knowledge underpinning the vast biological diversity contained in terrestrial soils worldwide. Among its various activities, the GSBI launched the Global Soil Biodiversity Conference held in Dijon (France, 2014) and more recently in Nanjing (China, 2017). The 3rd Global Soil Biodiversity Conference to be held in Dublin (Ireland) in 2021 will expand on previous GSBI conferences and convene the world’s leading experts in this interdisciplinary field of soil biodiversity science to present and discuss recent advances addressing the urgency of meeting global challenges which link to human, animal and plant health and a more sustainable world. The conference will be the top meeting for all scientists, technologists, experimentalists and modellers, students and practitioners working on any aspects of soil biodiversity science and its linkages to the functioning of our global biosphere. The conference will provide the latest updates on soil biodiversity research and knowledge for scientists, policy makers, regulators, environmental agencies, conservationists, land user managers and other stakeholders in the sustainable use and conservation of soil biodiversity. Host Organisation Both University College Dublin and Teagasc - Agriculture and Food Development Authority have a long and successful tradition of research on many aspects of soils and soil biology. The physical nature of soils, hydraulic conductivity, nutrient dynamics (including nitrogen and phosphorous cycles and carbon sequestration), plant productivity, the management of animal manures and the role of soil biodiversity in these are core to the activities of many groups within both organisations. In addition, the Local Organising Committee includes colleagues for Queen’s University Belfast and AFBI-Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute of Northern Ireland. 6 Meet Experts - Generate New Ideas - Network Internationally
