About the COPA AMÉRICA The Copa America is the oldest international football tournament in the world. It was contested for the first time in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in June 1916. Some of the best and most renowned athletes in world football are South American and will play in the 46th edition of the tournament, between 14 June and 7 July. The main men’s football tournament between South American national teams will be held for the fifth time in Brazil and is organised by the Local Organising Committee – CONMEBOL Copa America Brazil 2019. Coincidentally, the event returns in the year in which it has been 100 years since the first edition on Brazilian soil – 1919. Brazil has also been host in 1922, 1949 and 1989. As well as the 10 South American members of CONMEBOL (Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela), Japan and Qatar, members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), will take part as guests. There are nine World Cup titles altogether at the competition. The 26 matches will be distributed in six stadiums: Mineirão Stadium (Belo Horizonte), Arena do Grêmio (Pòrto Alegre), Maracanã Stadium (Rio de Janeiro), Arena Fonte Nova (Salvador), Arena Corinthians and Morumbi Stadium (São Paulo). Regulations The 12 teams will face each other once in Groups A, B and C with the top two and the two best third-placed teams progressing to the quarter-finals. In the group phase, in case of teams level on points, the criteria for deciding the better team are: 1) goal difference, 2) goals scored, 3) result between the two teams, 4) draw. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be a one-off match. 5 CONMEBOL COPA AMÉRICA BRASIL 2019
Should a match be tied at the end of normal time in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and third-placed play-off, the spot or placement will be decided directly by a penalty shoot-out. In the final, should the scores be tied after 90 minutes, there will be a 30-minute period of extra time and, should the match still be tied, the title will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
