A MESSAGE FROM H.E. TEODORO OBIANG NGUEMA MBASOGO PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF EQUATORIAL GUINEA Equatorial Guinea is a country of great wealth: rich in natural resources, diverse in its island, mainland and marine territories, and located in the Gulf of Guinea, a region of astonishing potential for economic growth. On this, the 50th anniversary of our independence, we celebrate the achievements of our people over the last half century, and the gift of our abundant land. In this golden jubilee year, we look back at some of the most momentous dates in the history of Equatorial Guinea. Thirty five years ago, in 1983, we made our first discovery of hydrocarbons. Just over a decade later, in 1995, we made the transformational discovery of the Zafiro field. In the years that followed, we built our downstream industry, including methanol and LNG plants. Together we have explored the ocean depths and used our national resources to build a prosperous Equatorial Guinea. In 2018 we recognize the enormous contribution of the people and the companies that have committed themselves to building a stronger Equatorial Guinea. I am pleased to present the Africa Energy Series: Equatorial Guinea 2018 publication as the official book celebrating the 50th Independence Anniversary of Equatorial Guinea and detailing its energy industry accomplishments. What we have achieved in just 50 years is remarkable in Africa and the world. Looking to the next fifty years, the future is bright for our nation and its petroleum industry. Credit: Jeremy Pollard
