Oaklands Wetland Flinders’ commitment to environmental research and teaching is fully realised in The Oaklands Education Centre, an exciting, purpose-built home for the partnership between the City of Marion and Flinders University. The centre provides a place for education, research and studies into wetlands, and showcases the site’s stormwater re-use scheme. Oaklands Wetland plays an important role in the community. Around 85,000 new plants have created a habitat for many different species of animals, including parrots, ducks, cockatoos and wader birds such as spoonbills, ibis and gulls. Fish and frogs live in the wetland, plus many different types of insects like dragonflies and mayflies. The wetland is fully operational and can treat up to 400 million litres of stormwater each year. 10 11
