She began her college career as a special education major, but fell in love with recreational therapy. Skylar started working with WSSRA when she was 15 years old. Bethany Pastrana Recreation Specialist (Children and Youth Programs) Bethany graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Recreational Therapy. She is passionate about enjoying life to the fullest and it shows in the variety of settings she has worked in over the last 5 years. WSSRA’s What is Lekotek? WSSRA Lekotek Toy Lending Library is a resource center for families with children who have special needs. Our trained Lekotek leaders offer play session for your entire family and will help you choose the toys you think your child will most enjoy for the following month. It operates very much like a traditional library and having new toys in your home each month will delight your children! Our Toys WSSRA’s Toy Lending Library houses over 2000 toys, games and play equipment. Some of our toys are highly specialized to meet the needs of children who are non-verbal and love toys that light up, play music and are easy to operate. IMAGINARIUM & LEKOTEK Why Play? • Play helps build self-esteem and self-confidence • Play develops fine and gross motor skills • Play helps stimulate the mind and boosts creativity and problem-solving skills • Play helps children use their imagination while developing their cognitive and language skills NEW LOCATION • Play helps improve social skills by demonstrating positive social interactions among the child, parents and siblings COMING SOON! The safety of our participants, families and staff is our top priority. In order to minimize risk of COVID-19, WSSRA has put eligibility requirements and safety protocols in place using the guidance from the IN-PERSON PROGRAMS: GUIDELINES & PROTOCOLS CDC, IDPH and DECO. WSSRA will continue to monitor guidelines and will update guidelines as information is made available. Adult/Participant Swim Lessons All Abilities WSSRA conducts swim lessons to allow all individuals to progress from beginner to advanced swimming abilities. Our swim lessons cover fundamental body positions, breath control, stroke drills, and age-appropriate safety skills. WSSRA uses the Michael Phelps IM swim program. The IM program is a multifaceted curriculum of water safety lessons, health & wellness education, and goal setting instruction. Due to state guidelines, WSSRA will not provide staffing in the IN-PERSON PROGRAMS: AQUATICS water. The attending adult is required to be in the water to provide support during the group lesson. WSSRA will notify families if guidelines change, and we are able to provide support staff to assist in the water.
