Message from the Mayor Welcome to the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Spring/Summer Recreation Guide. As we round out another winter with spring skiing and riding, I hope browsing through the overflowing pages in this spring/ summer guide gets you and the whole family excited about the diverse range of activities and programs on offer in the warmer months. There is soccer on our pitches, hockey at the arena, art with your kids at Myrtle Phillip Community Centre, fitness classes at Meadow Park Sports Centre, book clubs and learning opportunities at Whistler Public Library, dedicated youth-only space and activities at Whistler’s Youth Centre, and so much more. The RMOW is committed to supporting quality recreation programs and services that inspire everyone to get involved. During the school holidays, we see the return of many terrific summer camps. Kids can join for a day or a week and are sure to make memories of a lifetime and get active as they enjoy rock climbing, hikes through Whistler parks, and pirate-themed days with friends, old and new. The RMOW is also pleased to have our recently introduced online recreation system available, making it easier to search for programs and classes, while also keeping your family’s accounts together on one screen, and tracking your activity history. Many of you have set up a new online account which you can access anytime via the MyRecreation link on the whistler.ca website. If you haven’t yet, get ready for registration day by setting up your new online account in advance. The RMOW offers many affordable opportunities to be active and play in Whistler. There are financial assistance programs on offer to improve access to recreation programs and services. As well as “save by the day” options with discounts for non- peak times and seasonal offerings. Whether you’re looking to meet others with the same interest, want to get involved in your favourite sports, or you’re looking for active ways to spend time with your children, you’ll find a variety of indoor and outdoor options at an affordable cost. I hope to see you on the field, at the park and on the trails. Enjoy! Mayor Jack Crompton RMOW SPRING / SUMMER 2019 RECREATION GUIDE 3

Physical Literacy Just like reading and writing, children have to learn how to move. • Stage 5: Train to Compete (girls 15 - 21, boys 16 - 23) • Stage 6: Train to Win (girls 18+, boys 19+) Goal of the Whistler Physical Literacy Initiative • Stage 7: Active for Life (any age participant) Every child in Whistler will have the opportunity to develop both physical literacy and games literacy, and that there will be a variety of activities for The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) focuses on programming all individuals to promote lifelong physical activity and participation for life. that develops skills at Stage 1 and 2 and then hopes to meet everyone’s needs for Stage 7. For more information contact the Program Physical Literacy Definition Services Supervisor 604-935-8369 or visit physicalliteracy.ca or Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, canadiansportforlife.ca knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life. (International Physical Literacy Association, 2014) physicalliteracy.ca Literacy is defined as: a person’s knowledge of a particular subject or field, for example, computer literacy. Therefore, physical literacy is: the mastering of fundamental movements skills. Physically Literate individuals: • Demonstrate a wide variety of basic human movements, fundamental movement skills and fundamental sports skills. • Move with poise, confidence, competence and creativity in different physical environments (on the ground, both indoor and outdoor; in the air; in and on water; on snow and ice). • Develop the motivation and ability to understand, communicate, apply and analyze different forms of movement. • Make choices that engage them in physical activity, recreation or sport activities that enhance their physical and psychological wellness, and permit them to pursue sport excellence commensurate with their ability and motivation. canadiansportforlife.ca Fundamental Movement Skills Mastering Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) is the most important step in developing physical literacy. FMS are basic movement skills taught through games and activities that engage children and motivate them to continue in an activity. While these basic skills are fun in nature, they also serve the purpose of teaching the essential skills required as a foundation for more complex physical activities and sports. It is important that all children develop a good base of these skills before puberty to optimize both future performance and lifelong activity. There are seven stages within the basic LTAD model: • Stage 1: Active Start (0 - 6 years) • Stage 2: FUNdamental (girls 6 - 8, boys 6 - 9) • Stage 3: Learn to Train (girls 8 - 11, boys 9 - 12) • Stage 4: Train to Train (girls 11 - 15, boys 12 - 16) RMOW SPRING / SUMMER 2019 RECREATION GUIDE 17
CANADIAN 24-HOUR MOVEMENT GUIDELINES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH: An Integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour, and Sleep PREAMBLE These guidelines are relevant to apparently healthy children and youth (aged 5–17 years) irrespective of gender, race, ethnicity, or the socio-economic status of the family. Children and youth are encouraged to live an active lifestyle with a daily balance of sleep, sedentary behaviours, and physical activities that supports their healthy development. Children and youth should practice healthy sleep hygiene (habits and practices that are conducive to sleeping well), limit sedentary behaviours (especially screen time), and participate in a range of physical activities in a variety of environments (e.g., home/school/community; indoors/outdoors; land/water; summer/winter) and contexts (e.g., play, recreation, sport, active transportation, hobbies, and chores). For those not currently meeting these 24-hour movement guidelines, a progressive adjustment toward them is recommended. Following these guidelines is associated with better body composition, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness, academic achievement and cognition, emotional regulation, pro-social behaviours, cardiovascular and metabolic health, and overall quality of life. The benefits of following these guidelines far exceed potential risks. These guidelines may be appropriate for children and youth with a disability or medical condition; however, a health professional should be consulted for additional guidance. The specific guidelines and more details on the background research informing them, their interpretation, guidance on how to achieve them, and recommendations for research and surveillance are available at www.csep.ca/guidelines.
GUIDELINES For optimal health benefits, children and youth (aged 5–17 years) should achieve high levels of physical activity, low levels of sedentary behaviour, and sufficient sleep each day. A healthy 24 hours includes: SWEAT STEP SLEEP SIT MODERATE TO VIGOROUS LIGHT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SLEEP SEDENTARY BEHAVIOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Several hours of a variety of Uninterrupted 9 to 11 hours No more than 2 hours per day An accumulation of at least structured and unstructured of sleep per night for those of recreational screen time; 60 minutes per day of moderate light physical activities; aged 5–13 years and 8 to 10 Limited sitting for extended to vigorous physical activity hours per night for those aged periods. involving a variety of aerobic 14–17 years, with consistent activities. Vigorous physical bed and wake-up times; activities, and muscle and bone strengthening activities should each be incorporated at least 3 days per week; Preserving sufficient sleep, trading indoor time for outdoor time, and replacing sedentary behaviours and light physical activity with additional moderate to vigorous physical activity can provide greater health benefits.
