INTRODUCTION The Grande Tournée La Défriche 2018, held from March 5th to 9th, is a very special and unique experience in Quebec. In fact, the CJE du Pontiac is the first Carrefour to set up a week-long exploratory tour for youth. The purpose of this tour is to explore other country sides. We invited young people to get out of their homes, explore and return to their hometown better equipped. During the week, they become journalists, detectives and explore what is going on elsewhere, outside of the usual tourist trails. The goal is to be inspired and to share their discoveries and the memorable moments with the population of the Pontiac. At the end, this tour may light a spark among the participants and their community that will help improve the quality of life in our beautiful region. That's one great achievement! As we visit local initiatives, we encourage local businesses. On this trip: We stop at restaurants that are unique to the ZERO TIMMIES region we are visiting for our lunches and dinners. ZERO MCDONALDS We avoid big chains. ZERO WASTE We also attempt to produce as little waste as possible by using reusable cups and bottles. La Grande Tournée 2018 is a project by Carrefour jeunesse-emploi du Pontiac

Magog-Orford Youth Hostel When St. Patrick's parish in Magog wanted to sell its rectory, due to financial reasons, the surrounding community fiercely opposed it. The Parish council then put out a call for projects and they would rent the rectory to the winning project. The Youth Hostel project won the contest. Their proposal for welcoming and affordable accommodations was in line with the values of the religious community. The hostel opened its doors in 2015. Breakfast is provided, and they offer accommodation including private rooms and dormitories. The heritage of the building has been preserved and enhanced. A mini-museum project about the history of each room is currently in discussion. The hostel also works in partnership with organizations that assist people experiencing difficulty, and throughout the year, they welcome people who are in need of temporary accommodations during difficult times. As the only representative of this type of accommodation in the region, the youth hostel does not unfairly compete with other types of accommodations including hotels, camping and inns; on the contrary, it attracts a new clientele to Magog. Le Pontiac has a restricted variety of Do we have a plan to conserve and enhance touristic accommodation our religious heritage buildings? La Villa Pierrot In May 2009, Villa Pierrot, a shelter for single mothers and their children, opened by welcoming their first 21 residents. This initiative was born from the mobilization of citizens and partners who, since 2006, have been seeking solutions to improve the quality of life for young mothers and their children. The Villa has 21 apartments, offices, and a nursery open to non-resident children, a thrift store in a closet, a collective kitchen and a beautifully landscaped lot. The Villa is located within walking distance of downtown Magog. There is a CJE office at the Villa. Debbie, from the local CJE, works on the resident’s life plans. Her interventions focus on promoting returns to school or work, and the life plan can include a child’s development. Young volunteers from other CJE programs come to babysit while the mothers attend their workshops. The Villa Pierrot team works on collective power and participative management. Their clientele consists of single mothers aged 18 to 35 years old. The mothers participate in all facts of life at the Villa by getting involved in different committees, like “Mères et Terre” which does the garden work around the Villa. "Everything is possible: we have to offer them experiences" says Lise Cadieux, Director. The director is always accompanied by a woman from the Villa during meetings, public assemblies or board meetings. "We do a lot of pairing; It's more complex work, longer work, but much more challenging!" says Lise Cadieux. The presence of the children helps the mothers get into action. At times, it is even the children who push their mothers to complete projects. Admission to the Villa is done by application. The main criterion is to be motivated to improve their current situation. Follow-up meetings are more easily completed at the Villa, because the women have fewer factors to take into account in order to attend these meetings (child care, transportation, etc). The construction of the Villa was made possible by the Accès Logis program. It was a $ 2.5 million project.
We offer housing for women and men in need. There are many single mothers living under the poverty line in the Pontiac. You can tell that Lise is really passionate about her job. Something like the Villa Pierrot would benefit everywhere! The way the Villa works, with a lot of support, helps the women to put things in perspective in their life! Accommodation for women in difficulty meets a critical need. Would there also be a need for long-term intermediate accommodation, such as Villa Pierrot, in the Pontiac? By building the Villa within walking distance of the town center, the founders have removed an obstacle to the women's autonomy as the car is no longer essential. Big savings!
Le P'tit Bonheur de Saint-Camille Thirty years ago, Saint-Camille experienced a decline in population which pushed its citizens to mobilize and create a pleasant living environment in order to retain and attract families. In 2001, St-Camille had a population of 440. Today, it is 529, which represents a 20% increase. Seeing the former general store go on sale, four citizens founded "Le Groupe du Coin" to buy the building. This purchase was intended to ensure that the building kept its commercial purpose during the village’s revitalization. Today, Le P'tit Bonheur de Saint-Camille's mission is to manage an intergenerational meeting place for Saint-Camille and the surrounding area. Le P'tit Bonheur houses a café, a professional kitchen, a theater that also serves as a restaurant for bi-monthly community lunches, an art gallery, a meeting room and the offices of the local development corporation. It hosts fifteen shows per year and the venue is part of the Réseau Scènes Ouvertes, which allows live webcasting of shows across Quebec. Basic operating costs remain a challenge for this type of organization. In order to sustain their financing, le P'tit Bonheur hosts pizza nights every Friday. The volunteers prepare 200 pizzas and they even deliver to the surrounding villages! I liked the sense of community. Everybody knew everybody and talked to each other. At lunch, everybody was talking to each other. "An art gallery in a village is as important as an ice rink. Because we live in a world of images, and children need to understand how images are built." -Sylvain, from the Groupe du Coin
"When we decide to settle somewhere, we first and foremost choose a living environment." -Katherine, de Destination Saint-Camille There are not many meeting places in the Pontiac, especially for young people and seniors. Saint-Camille is a connected village! Several buildings in the village The Scènes Ouvertes project allowed centres are vacant or have been them to install a high-speed broadband transformed into private internet network in their village. Being residences. connected gave them the opportunity to "Today, small isolated villages no maintain links with other villages around longer exist.
Destination Saint-Camille The St. Camille church was becoming too expensive for the parish to maintain. There were a two possibilities for the church’s future, including demolishing the church and building it smaller or transforming it. The second option won and "Destination Saint-Camille" was created. The church now houses a rural conference center, which can host seminars or shows. Some conferences that took place in Saint-Camille were broadcasted live in Montreal! The sacristy has been transformed into a municipal library. Mass is still held in the church’s choir, because the sacred objects are now contained in integrated furniture that opens to recreate the prayer space. Five keys For successful projects 1. The municipality, the school and the citizens must have a shared vision, and shared leadership 2. Share knowledge, give yourself reasons to come together 3. Build trust 4. Allow yourself the right to make mistakes 5. Caring (taking care, loving, encouraging and supporting one another)
Other inspirational initiatives in Saint-Camille The network of nature trails around the village allows citizens to exercise and walk around their municipality. Many owners have agreed that the trail to be on the boundaries of their land. A small covered bridge was built on the trails. Citizens can also walk in the fields of La Clé des Champs, which produces and sells vegetables in Saint-Camille. Is there enough public access to nature in our region? Several photo projects have allowed the citizens of Saint-Camille to build pride and encourage the feeling of belongingness This photo of the village in front of the church shows it! Sylvain told us: "Saint-Camille is not the perfect paradise, but we are still able to talk to each other."
Gould Covered Bridge . The Gould Bridge is an historic covered bridge. Closed to traffic, every year, it hosts the "Night of the Covered Bridge" festival. This event takes place in August and features a 24-hours celebration including communal meals, a local produce market, live entertainment and swimming in the river. This eco-festival produces very little waste. The festival goers can camp near the bridge. Six musical artists, dance troupes, literature workshops and even a piano bar gather under the bridge, rain or shine! Could we imagine an event like Similar to the Pontiac, the historic covered bridge is a source of pride this at the Pontiac covered bridge? and a symbol for the region. The bridge was really pretty, I liked the scenery. I could imagine the festival!
La Pommetterie de Saint-Gabriel-Lalemant A few years ago, Saint-Gabriel- Lalemant did not have the best reputation in Kamouraska. With the arrival of an agronomist in the village, the mayor had the idea to involve the citizens in restoring the municipality’s vitality and pride. This is how the Pommetterie project was born and crab-apple trees were sold at a low cost for citizens to plant on their land. . In Spring, these trees bloom and the village is beautiful. After a few years, the trees produced fruits! An organization was created to transform and sell the crab-apple jelly. Cyclists and tourists visit the village in the Spring to see the flowers. In the last years, La Pommetterie developed a new project that involved the picking and sale of wild mushrooms. La Pommetterie held a welcoming lunch for our group where we tasted recipes from the Kam-Aide organization, which prepares and sells healthy prepared meals for the elderly and even Kamouraska students . It was delicious! With the aging population, Kam-Aide's The Pontiac has a favourable dishes met a need. This is especially climate to grow fruits. important in rural areas where many seniors live in food deserts.
Pointe-aux-Orignaux Chapel Pointe-aux-Orignaux, part of the Rivière-Ouelle municipality stands on a magnificent site. The pointe advances into the St-Lawrence River. The view is vast and the wind is powerful! Historically, this area was mostly frequented by summer vacationers. The chapel allowed them to attend mass even during their holidays. It was used until 2015, and then the diocese invited the community to think about a project to give it a second life. An ad hoc committee has been created to lead the thinking process. Philippe Dubé, who was part of the committee, had an idea to create an exhibition in the chapel. Each visitor would be . invited to share their ideas on the future of the building. More than 1000 people participated in the survey! At the end of the survey, the Pointe-aux-Orignaux Community and Cultural Center was created. It is an NPO. They are in the process of purchasing the chapel and the programming is under development. For this year, an exhibition of schooner models, a jazz show and a conference are already scheduled. Partnerships are created to nurture the feeling of belongingness and involve the community in the development of the project. At the heart of the project's success are the support and the involvement of the Rivière-Ouelle community. The religious heritage histories that must find a new purpose are common on our tour! This is indeed a challenge that must be addressed by almost all communities in Quebec. The Pontiac is no exception, especially since it houses buildings of various religions! "In “mobilisation,” there is mobile. Community members must get involved in projects by finding their “mobility,” their motivation and their reason of being. ."
The magazine Rumeur du Loup is a collaborative monthly magazine distributed throughout Kamouraska, Témiscouata, Basques and the Rivière-du-Loup region. We invited Marie-Amélie Dubé, the Editor and the Artistic Director of the magazine, to tell us about her work. The magazine prints 2200 copies and is found in 450 waiting rooms throughout the region. The magazine is free, the authors are volunteers, and the magazine is funded with advertisements. This medium allows for ideas and thoughts to circulate in the region, in a different way than local newspapers. Rumeur du Loup puts a lot of importance on local events and businesses, while encouraging open-mindedness, social justice and culture. The Pontiac has an English and a With our Anglophone and Francophone bilingual newspaper, but no monthly communities, what would be the challenges and magazine. impacts of such a magazine in the Pontiac? Our time to shine! We wrote an article for RUMEUR DU LOUP! READ IT IN THE ANNEX
Community carpentry workshop Faced with the social isolation of men in the region and concerned by a high rate of suicide, the community of Rivière-du-Loup decided to take action. The community carpentry workshop in Rivière-du- Loup was inaugurated in 2015. The venue, open two afternoons per week, allows members, men aged 50 and over, to gather and work on small projects or larger ones for community organizations (for example: benches for the youth center). At 3 pm, it's sacred that the machines are stopped and the men drink tea. They each have their own cup that is clearly identified. Tea time is sometimes the moment when their tongues are loosened and the men discuss things that affect them, including: cancer, suicide, the loss of a loved one, a divorce... Alain Courcy, Vice-Chair of the committee, showed us around the workshop. There are many tools and equipment, and they are well maintained and safe. He proudly showed us the projects that members are working on. Members only pay a $2 per board feet for the wood they use for their personal projects. To be a member, you must pay a membership fee of $ 25. It is, of course, forbidden to use the workshop for commercial projects. Since last year, the workshop opened two other time slots for men and women aged 18 and over. The . workshop has become a meeting point in the community! What existing facilities could be The aging population and the exodus of adult men to combined with a similar project in the out-of-province jobs make unifying projects in the Pontiac?
The Alpagas d'Aldo Farm is an agro-tourism company. The couple who owns the farm takes care of thirty animals and organizes farm visits to inform people about the peculiarities of alpacas. Visitors can buy various products made out of alpaca wool at their shop. In the couple, one partner mainly works on the farm (about three hours a day) and the other has a full- time job. This allows them not to be financially dependent on wool production and to invest time in the tourism offer. The couple also has a small fruit plantation for self-picking, and offers visitors an educational excursion to discover forest mushrooms. The Pontiac has several agricultural Is there a terroir in the Pontiac? If so, how do we businesses, but few of them offer tours. make inhabitants proud of this?
Lunch with Alexandre and Odile Alexandre Bibeau works at the Kamouraska RCM and is responsible for the Parc Régional du Haut-Pays de Kamouraska (Kamouraska Highland Regional Park). An initiative focused on developing the Kamouraska territory which does not border the St-Lawrence River, and, therefore, is less well known. This park includes forests, roads, villages, tourist attractions, organizations, etc. In short, it is a dynamic humanized landscape that involves all stakeholders in the field. . "The project of the Parc Régional du Haut- Pays is a project about rural pride. We stopped calling it the backroads, we found a new identity!" - Alexandre Bibeau Odile Flibotte takes care of the Place aux Jeunes program. She is a Migration Officer and organizes discovery trips to Kamouraska a few times a year to attract new residents.
Tandem-Jeunesse, une auberge du coeur Tandem-Jeunesse is a shelter for youth in difficulty, aged between 15 and 22 years old. It is part of the provincial network Auberges du coeur. The stays vary from 1 month to 1 year, and sometimes some youth having difficult end of the month come for just one meal. The young residents have various tasks, such as preparing meals. Tandem- Jeunesse has 13 employees, some of whom are street workers who meet the youth directly in their living environment. . Homelessness in rural areas is hidden homelessness. Youth in difficulty have no permanent address, but are not necessarily outside on the street. They spend nights at friends' homes and are in a state of perpetual relocation. Tandem-Jeunesse is working to prevent homelessness and is helping to improve youth’s independence and their quality of life. Initially, the community rejected Tandem-Jeunesse and refused to have the house move to La Pocatière. After long discussions and meeting people who had concerns, Karina Fleury, the Director, managed to get her project accepted. A youth worker is present at all times at the home, and the atmosphere is very friendly! With all the vacant buildings across the Pontiac, The Pontiac has the same challenges as would there not be room to develop Kamouraska regarding youth in need accommodations for youth in need? What concrete and invisible homelessness. actions are possible to help these youth? If we had more ressources like that to help kids in the Pontiac, it would be great. Kids are the next generation. They are the future.
La Pocatière's Incredible Edible The Incredible Edibles initiative is not unique to La Pocatière. It is a global movement started in England, aimed at ensuring democratic access to food for all citizens by planting edible plants, fruits and vegetables in public flower beds. At La Pocatière, it all started with small gardens in bins on the main street. However, Vincent, with whom we spoke, has bigger dreams. He wishes to create the "Chemin sans faim" (Road Without Hunger), a path lined with fruit trees and vegetable plants with a social and educational purpose. . The Incredible Edibles also reminds citizens that food is not just a consumer product, but a work of nature that surrounds us. Every year, at La Pocatière’s annual public market, the Incredible Edibles make their Incredible Soup from products grown during the summer. They also use this event as an occasion to spread awareness about the Photos tirées de la page Facebook des Incroyables comestibles de La Pocatière project!
REFLEXIONS about the expérience The week as a whole was a success and I am glad I did La Grande Tournée 2018. It gave me a new perspective. Before I did this trip, I didn’t know all these things existed. So, I guess all the people that didn't really leave Campbell’s Bay either don’t know Brieanna about them. Sometimes you need something or someone to give you that opportunity, so you can bring new ideas. It is too easy to sit at home and say : "This town has nothing »The world is changing. We need to change with it, or we gonna be left behind.
REFLEXIONS about the experience I find we opened up to a lot of ideas that are very effective down here. There are definitely a lot of resources out here that could benefit our towns. The experience was very eye opening. I didn’t know that these services were available. The people we met here, they have a passion. They are moved by a goal. Everyone we met was very hospitable, welcoming, et vraiment Kendal vraiment gentils! We can make all the excuses we want, but at the end of the day, it is up to us only to do the changes. Aside from all the services and projects we visited, I really enjoyed visiting the small towns and exploring the province!
IF YOU DON'T TAKE THE CHANGE BY THE HAND, IT WILL TAKE YOU BY THE THROAT. Winston Churchill WHAT ABOUT SAYING see you next year?
