Portage View PS eNEWS February 2019 Message from Vice Principal Morris January brought us chilling temperatures, snow, ice, wind and even rain on top of it all. Once again, our school yard got hit hard with the winter elements that all compiled to make our grounds quite slippery at times. Please remember that while our walkways are maintained with sand and salt throughout the winter, our yard is not treated. In addition, the City does not maintain the cat walks and shortcuts to our school grounds. At times, this winter, we have had to close our school yard for student play. When we have to do this, we have the students use only the tarmac area. At times we have also placed caution tape up and we ask that all parents respect this and walk around. Although it may take a few extra minutes at the beginning and end of the day, it is always safer to walk the “long way” around and use maintained walk-ways. Please help by talking to your children about slip prevention: wear appropriate winter footwear adjust stride/speed to surface conditions avoid shortcuts, stay on maintained walkways talk to students about safe winter practices, including footwear choices. We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that all playground structures are closed for the winter. It is unsafe to use playground equipment when the ground is frozen. Please keep in mind that our school grounds are not supervised between 3:30 pm—8:55 am. Students should not be left unsupervised on school grounds between these hours. Winter weather also causes havoc in our parking lot. We lose a significant number of parking spots to snow hills and our lot becomes much busier with vehicles dropping off/picking up students. We remind all parents that we close our parking lot 15 minutes before the entry and dismissal bells. These closures are in an effort to reduce the number of vehicles in our lot when we have so many students walking around. While we do what we can, to make our school property as safe as possible for everyone, please continue to do whatever you can to help. Please, follow our rules, be courteous to our staff and other parents and, whenever possible – leave the car at home and walk your child (ren) to and from school using maintained walk ways. February 18th is Family Day! Schools are closed and we hope that all our Panthers take the day to enjoy some time together as a family.
