ALL REPORTERS VISUALS MOBILE & MULTIPLATFORM EDITORIAL INTERACTIVE Edwin 'Teddy' Amenabar, University of Maryland AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT My name is Teddy Amenabar and I am from Burtonsville, Maryland (near Silver Spring). Like my Twitter bio says, I do love long walks on the beach but I am also an avid swimmer and often you'll find me listening to some song by The Head and the Heart. If you like nerdy comments about the next Marvel movie, feel free to follow me on Twitter @TeddyAmen. At the University of Maryland, I worked at The Diamondback — the independent student newspaper — as the first online managing editor. Last year, I also was the web developer for Press Uncuffed, a nonprofit created by Dana Priest and some students at the college in partnership with CPJ to advocate for imprisoned journalists worldwide. I see social media and web development as tools to present articles in new and innovative ways, further educating readers on a topic or issue. I really hope I can play some role in telling those stories and I can't say enough how excited I am to start interning at The Washington Post. Next »

ALL REPORTERS VISUALS MOBILE & MULTIPLATFORM EDITORIAL INTERACTIVE roo s Mers on, e University G APHICS After my freshman year of college, I worked at ersal as one of their first engineering interns. At the time, the company was preparing to launch a beta version of its highly interactive technology platform. It was a lean startup so lean, in fact, that despite the abundant amenities and snacks, the other intern and I were responsible for forging our own paths, contributing to the platform as best we could. I worked as an in house developer, banging on the API, creating online courses, building interactive gadgets , and thinking hard about the future of online education as well as my own education. Near the end of the summer, one of my coworkers (a Thiel ellow) urged me to learn about a new JavaScript visuali ation library developed by Mike Bostock. My introduction to D .js (Data Driven Documents) pi ued my interest in information design and helped guide my efforts to combine writing, problem solving, and design into my coursework and personal projects. During the fall of , I had a blast incorporating D into a project to teach computational topology concepts using interactive browser based tools—textbooks laden with symbolic manipulation are impenetrable, after all The project gave me a tremendous sense of satisfaction at having wrestled with a host of computational problems, graphic design considerations, as well as the challenges that accompany attempts to convey complex ideas and processes through writing. This project not only helped give me the opportunity to pursue an internship at the Washington Post, but also led to my current hunger to become better at both teaching myself and teaching others in a very multidisciplinary way. When I m not evangeli ing D , I train on my bike and race with the Duke cycling team. acing bikes is one of the hardest things I ve ever done I think it has toughened me up, so I keep doing it. The atmeal, CD, and n maga ine are my favorite sources of funnies. Most importantly, the shows Louie and House M.D. mean A L T to me.

ALL REPORTERS VISUALS MOBILE & MULTIPLATFORM EDITORIAL INTERACTIVE Eli abet o , rown University MET I caught the journalism bug as a high school junior, where our student newspaper was a safe haven for all the misfits in a magnet school known for nerds. After getting my first story back bleeding with red ink edits, I fell in love. I spent the next two years writing, editing and hunting for typos in page proofs after school until the janitors begged me to go home as they closed classrooms for the night. This May, I'm graduating from Brown University with a degree in the history of science, though my real education happened during a three year stint at the daily student newspaper. At the Brown Daily Herald, I wrote and edited features and breaking news stories, and covered a missing student case that consumed Twitter and eddit after the Boston Marathon. In , I reported on criminal justice, the environment and Texas politics for The Texas Tribune, chasing after state legislators and canoeing on the longest river in Texas. Last summer, I interned for the Investigative eporting Workshop at American University, worked for reporters at the Workshop and the Post, and crashed weekend shifts on the Post's Metro desk. I've worn out more flats than I can count and learned (the hard way) that you should always bring sunscreen when reporting outside at high noon. When I'm not collecting blisters and sunburns, you can find me getting into arguments about ecologies of knowledge or cursing the broken escalators in the Dupont Circle Metro station. This summer, I'm looking forward to working in a newsroom that's open at all hours of the night, finding more great stories in DC and learning how to tell them well.

Growing up in the South taught me to find the uirks and little instances of beauty in the world around me. It also made me a pretty good hostess who will continuously insist you eat more. Today, I find nothing greater than watching a perfect stranger open up and I hold the view that visual storytelling, even in a changing industry, can still move people. I am seeking my BA in both Sociology and Photojournalism from Western entucky University. In the all of I was an International Photojournalism student at The Danish School of Media and Journalism in Aarhus, Denmark. There I found an appreciation for black clothing and I haven't turned back. I have interned for The regonian, The oanoke Times, and The lint Journal. I always thought I'd go to Georgetown University, but at the last minute I decided to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is a four hour drive from my home in Maryland. When I got to Chapel Hill, I know I wanted to go to a lot of sporting events and covering them for our school newspaper allowed me to get a better seat than what's in the student section. ALL REPORTERS VISUALS MOBILE & MULTIPLATFORM EDITORIAL INTERACTIVE eiyi awn ai, aint ose 's University DESIGN G APHICS n my name card, I list myself as a visual communicator, information designer, art history digger, incidental photographer, code learner, curious mind, travel enthusiast, people observer, museum hopper, dog lover, physical book reader, avid baker, Mandarin speaker, long distance walker, and life ponderer. ou can tell how hard of a time I have defining myself, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. ut of all things, what I feel the most strongly about is that I am a lucky person. I m lucky to have parents who support my decisions, even if that means leaving them and attending college somewhere thousands of miles away from home on the other side of the Pacific. I m lucky to have best friends with whom I shared the most memorable experiences on Monday production nights in the newsroom of my university s student newspaper, The Hawk. This experience opened my mind to the prospect of being a designer. Although I did not initially choose to pursue a formal design education, I m lucky to have had the opportunities to learn about this field through experiences such as photographing how mural arts bond people together in Philadelphia, using motion and info graphics to advocate Tuscany's rich cultural heritage with The lorentine in lorence, and making a book about the current design scene in China with a British creative agency in Beijing. A lot of my design experience so far has been closely linked with the journalistic approach and social impact it makes me see design as a form of storytelling in which designers are also content creators. This leads to my aspiration of becoming a visual storyteller who communicates emotions through design. If I could make something that causes people to experience emotions, whether it is happiness, sadness, nostalgia, or excitement, I would consider that a success. Again, I feel lucky to have this much figured out. I guess the biggest perk of reali ing how lucky I am is that I am always trying to do my best not to jinx it. So right now, I am just excited and ready to dive in and learn from everyone at The Washington Post internship this summer.

My brother and I would fight over the sports page before running out the door to school as kids until I graduated to the A section. I love a good story wherever I can find one, whether that's duck hunting at a.m. in rural Missouri or exploring horse racing stables around Baltimore — any place I can ask the uestion How do you do that My dream job is writing long form for a newspaper or maga ine and eventually transitioning into column writing when I run out of energy. I ve worked at The Montgomery Ga ette, Bethesda Maga ine, The Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune and The Columbia Missourian over the past few years. In my spare time, I enjoy umpiring youth baseball games, watching West Wing on Netflix, trying to cook food (which I m not good at doing on deadline) and avoiding videogames at all costs.
