Phase Two will close at 10am on Thursday 27 February. This is when all remaining CCA places will be allocated. SEASON THREE RUNS FROM 9 MARCH 2020 TO 15 MAY 2020 (8 WEEKS). KEY NEW INFORMATION COVID - 19 IMPACT ON SEASON 3 In light of recent COVID-19 Guidelines please note that we will be not be running any off- site CCAs this season This season is also starting a week later than previously advertised to allow us time to adjust to any impact the guidelines have had on our Season 3 planning Parents of learners from Kindergarten to Year 1 may choose to avoid CCAs that are offered by an external provider to limit your child’s exposure to external visitors. If the COVID-19 Guidelines change during the season resulting in us cancelling a paid CCA, we will do our absolute best to recover the cost from our providers. However this is not guaranteed and the school will not be held liable to repay the cost of the CCA. CCA Gathering point All learners will gather in the Level 5 West Wing Cafeteria after school and will be taken to their CCA classrooms by their teachers. The teachers can make alternate arrangements with the learners for the weeks after. Pick up point After CCAs in the afternoon, learners can be picked up from the Level 2 Eco Cafe, outside the Learner Services office. Younger learners who are taking the CCA bus will be taken to the bus bay by the CCA teacher. EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM PROGRAMME SEASON THREE 3
Please select CCAs that your child will commit to for the whole season. The system randomly allocates places and there is no advantage to selecting early in this process. Due to the length of the school day CCAs are not available for Nursery learners. Kindergarten learners will be allocated up to 2 CCAs (1 CCA, 1 paid CCA). Year 1 learners will be allocated up to 3 CCAs (2 CCA, 1 paid CCA). All learners from Year 2 upwards will be assigned up to a maximum of 5 CCAs, (3 CCAs, 2 paid CCAs) depending on the popularity of the CCAs. Learners from Year 5 upwards should make their own choices with parental guidance. Parents will not be able to do this through their own portal login. For information on ACSIS Sports, click here. PARTICIPATION IN CCA SESSIONS & EVENTS Please take time to read over the various activities on offer and discuss with your child which CCAs they would like to commit to. We strongly encourage every learner to commit to at least one CCA each season and also to take part in at least one voluntary event per year. CCAs do not run during school or public holidays. ADDITIONAL LUNCHTIME & AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES SWIMMING AT NEXUS Please note that the Nexus Swim Squads will continue to train as established. This programme runs throughout the year. Learners in Years 2, 3 and 4 who wish to improve their swimming should join the Recreational Swimming CCA on Tuesday and Thursday 3.30pm – 4.30pm. To ensure a place on either of these services for the first week of CCAs, you must email BT&Tan or call 6483 7260 / 6483 4527 no later than 9am on 28 February. More contact details are available at www.nexus.edu.sg in the Parent Zone. Parents who are picking up learners at 4.30pm can meet their child at the Eco Cafe on level 2. PLEASE NOTE: The CCA bus only runs during the CCA Season. COSTS Many CCAs are offered free of charge; if there is a cost associated with the CCA this is indicated. Please note that all CCA payments should be completed by 27 March 2020 (end of week 2 of CCAs). Learners will only be able to attend their CCA in week 3 if payment has been made in full. Please note that all CCA choices will be taken as final at the end of week 2. You will be billed for the whole season for all paid CCAs your child is registered for at the end of week 2. Please be aware that if your child is absent or a paid CCA is cancelled by the school due to unforeseen circumstances e.g. haze or adverse weather, there will be no ‘make-up’ class or reimbursement. Ms Stephanie Hughes Deputy Head of School (Academic Support) SERVICE & LEADERSHIP AT NEXUS LL We encourage and support our learners in their service and leadership initiatives. Nexus has CCAs that are led by our Secondary students. These CCAs have an LL symbol next to them which indicates they are Learner Led. These acts of service will contribute to: • Creativity, Action & Service (CAS) - this is a requirement of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) PRIMARY SCHOOL COUNCIL We consider every child at Nexus capable of taking on a leadership role. Stephanie Thompson will provide dedicated support sessions on Thursday lunchtime to nurture this student leader- ship initiative If you have an idea to make the world (or Nexus) a better place, we would love to get learner-initiated lunchtime activities started. Children are more than welcome to come along on and get involved. LEARNER LEADERSHIP The Learner Leadership Team (LLT) is a 13 strong team of IBDP learners, made up of Lead Learners, House Leaders, Wellbeing Leaders and Lead Learner Mentors. These learners are role models that are a key part of the school community as they organise and support a wide range of whole-school events, initiatives and assemblies. The LLT team is also supported by a group of Learner Representatives from Year 7 to 11. These Learner Representatives meet together with the LLT and represent their year groups and forms to ensure that all learners contribute a valuable voice to decision making. As aspiring future leaders these learners also benefit from leadership training, allowing them to better support their peers as they grow and learn together. 6 NEXUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (SINGAPORE)
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE COMPETITION FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international competition organised by FIRST for elementary and middle school students. Each year FIRST LEGO League introduces a scientific and real- world challenge for teams to focus and research on. The robotics part of the competition involves designing and programming LEGO EV3 Mindstorms robots to complete tasks. This is the second year that Nexus plans on sending a team. DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S INTERNATIONAL AWARD The Bronze and Gold Levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award are now on offer at Nexus, and many of our learners in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 are currently taking part. It is the world’s largest Youth Development Award for young adults aged 14 to 24 and is widely recognised by universities and employers around the world. It is made up of the following five sections: • Voluntary Service • Skill • Physical Recreation • Adventurous Journey • Residential Project (Gold only) Many learners will be using CCA activities to count towards their Award. If your child would like to get involved, please encourage him or her to email: intaward@nexus.edu.sg EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM PROGRAMME SEASON THREE 7
MOTHER TONGUE NEXUS IS AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IN THE TRUE SENSE OF THE WORD. CURRENTLY OUR LEARNERS COME FROM OVER 45 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES! WE ARE AWARE OF AT LEAST 24 LANGUAGES SPOKEN AS A FIRST OR HOME LANGUAGE BY OUR LEARNERS. Whilst English is our common language, we must not underestimate the importance of our mother tongue, or home language(s), which form part of our identity. Our Mother Tongue programme aims to engage learners and to give them an opportunity to maintain and practise their language skills together with other speakers of a similar age. However, a home language cannot just be cultivated through a weekly or twice weekly lesson. The family has the greatest influence on the development of a child’s language. CCA MOTHER TONGUE PROGRAMME We are looking to provide classes in these mother tongue languages for learners in the following year groups. This will be dependent on the age range and meeting the minimum number of learners required for a class to start. Mother Tongue classes began on 20 January 2020. Next phase is Term 4 LANGUAGE OPEN TO DAY(S) AND TIME FEE ROOM French Years 1 - 6 Tuesdays 3.30pm - 4.30pm $30/hr 01-W.020 Hindi Years 4 - 6 Wednesdays 3.30pm - 4.30pm $30/hr 01-W.090 Hindi Years 1 - 3 Thursdays 3.30pm - 4.30pm $30/hr 01-W.060 Italian Years 2 - 6 Mondays 3.30pm - 5.00pm $45/1.5hrs* 01-W.050 Japanese Years 1 - 4 Tuesdays 3.30pm - 4.30pm $30/hr 01-W.090 Tuesdays 3.30pm - 4.30pm Hebrew Years 1 -4 $30/hr 01-W.090 Starting 3rd March 2020 *Please note the higher fees and increased session time for this 8 NEXUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (SINGAPORE)
To register for any of the above language courses, or if you are an experienced teacher who would like to contribute to our programme in a language not listed above, please contact: mothertongue@nexus.edu.sg. Please note that there is no Mother Tongue programme during the last week of each term. We regularly contact parents to gauge their interest with a view to offering other languages. If there is enough interest, and we can recruit a suitably experienced teacher, we will set up classes based on language interest. Paula Kennedy-Wingate Deputy Head of School (Secondary) MUSIC ENSEMBLES MUSIC ENSEMBLES HAVE TWO SESSIONS IN THE YEAR: SEMESTER ONE (TERMS 1-2) AND SEMESTER TWO (TERMS 3-4).
