Terrie Campbell always wanted to be a teacher, but it wasn’t until her daughter Danni Chapman suggested that they study a Bachelor of Education together that, in her fifties, she decided to pursue this dream. ‘Danni was working in childcare because she was passionate about working with and teaching children. I suggested to her to study to be a teacher as this would work better for her as her family grew,’ Terrie said. ‘I will if you do,’ replied Danni. Teaching 05 excellence Why choose Griffith? Griffith Education graduate Krystal Flynn was recently awarded The Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Beginning to Teach Award. Krystal has been sharing her passion for teaching with children on a remote tropical island in the Torres Strait, 4km from Papua New Guinea. An early career teacher, Krystal has been working on Saibai Island at Tagai State College, where her experience and fascination with the local languages prompted her to study a Master of Applied Linguistics. This experience began during her time at Griffith University. ‘Griffith taught me that remarkable can happen, whether it’s during a lecture, during a practicum 15 minutes or even 6 hours away from home, or in the classroom with 24 pairs of eyes watching you,’ she said. Throughout her four years, Jae interacted with her mentors who encouraged her to complete her practicums and internship in rural and remote areas. These remote placements were a highlight for Jae as she experienced teaching outside a metropolitan area and came to learn the importance of education in shaping the opportunities and positive experiences for young people. In addition, in response to an industry call for a common approach for non-academic selection criteria for initial teacher education programs, all applicants for this degree, both domestic and international, will be required to submit a personal statement of 1,000 words, split into two parts. The first part will relate to motivation and suitability for teaching. The second part will relate to prior experiences with learning or leadership activities. You will be assessed in areas such as engagement with learning and willingness to learn, resilience, as well as communication and planning skills. Interesting career Bachelor of Education graduate Laura Dean chose teaching as a career to be an instigator of change. ‘Education is a great way to inspire and equip young people to realise their full potential and it’s also an interesting career, where no two days are alike,’ she said. During her degree Laura spent a summer 17 on exchange at the University of Exeter in England, where she studied visual culture Undergraduate degree and 12th century European history. ‘It was an incredible experience. My visual culture lecturer was a curator at the TATE in London, and as part of our course we enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at how the exhibition was set up and a Q&A with other TATE staff,’ she said.
