Message from the President and CEO 2020 will be a year most of us won’t forget as COVID-19 upended how we do business, how we socialize, and how we live on a global scale. It was summer last year that I introduced a new way of thinking about the Burnaby Board of Trade and our mission: “Catalyst, Convener, and Champion”. In truth we have always delivered on these values but the “3 C” approach better articulated to others the vital role we serve as a Catalyst for economic growth, a Convener of business, government and community leaders, and the Champion for our local business community and their interests. When COVID-19 struck in mid-March, our business community began to face challenges unlike any seen before. Using the lens of Catalyst, Convener and Champion, the Burnaby Board of Trade quickly pivoted to focus exclusively on COVID-19. We set a goal of being first-to-market with the very latest information on the many government announcements, programs and sup- ports that were being rolled out, while also providing needed context and explanation through regular update calls with our network and one-on-one consultations. To sustain consumer confidence during the worst of the shut-down, we built an “Open for Busi- ness” directory of local companies still open and encouraged people to #BuyLocalBuyBurnaby through a digital and print media campaign that reached tens of thousands. Weeks before businesses began re-opening, the Burnaby Board of Trade was the first chamber of commerce to develop and publish a local PPE supplier list to help our business community find and secure the safety equipment necessary to get back to work. And we worked to show how re-opening could be done, by being the first chamber to fully open its office and resume normal hours. Throughout COVID-19, we also worked hard to still bring our diverse community together, even when we couldn’t physically be together. Our events were moved online to continue to create platforms for our members to connect and to learn, and we were also the region’s first chamber to hold a hybrid in-person/online event, helping to rebuild confidence that business activities can be done safely. Finally, as our community approached re-opening, the Burnaby Board of Trade was the first chamber anywhere to put together a broad coalition of business, government, labour, non-profit and education to support recovery, as we did with the Burnaby Business Recovery Task Force, whose final report and recommendations will guide our efforts moving forward. As we move into recovery we will continue to listen, to advocate and to deliver the most up-to-date information on programs and resources as they become available. My promise to you, is that we will keep fighting for and supporting you, our members. I also want to thank our incredible board of directors who have worked tirelessly this year to support our organization and our mission to serve you. I would also like to thank the City of Burnaby whose close partnership with our board helps us to work together to create a healthy and sustainable community for all. Lastly, I want thank you, our members for your unflagging support, your kind words, and your passion for your businesses. I look forward to working together with you in the coming months and years to build back better. Please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time. My door is always open. Letter from the Mayor Our community, like so many around the globe, is facing unprecedented change. While COVID-19 has tested our resilience, the pandemic also reinforced our greatest strengths. We are a dynamic, inclusive and connected community, where collaboration is the founda- tion of success. The City of Burnaby values its partnership with the Burnaby Board of Trade and we will continue to work together on innovative solutions to unforeseen challenges. One of our biggest priorities is ensuring Burnaby businesses thrive. As Mayor, I was pleased to participate in the Burnaby Business Recovery Task Force, alongside representatives from various businesses, non-profit groups, post-secondary institutions and City staff. I am confident that the 13 recommendations outlined in the Task Force Action Plan will help businesses prosper. I’m particularly excited about the creation of a new Burnaby Centre for Business Recovery and Resilience. This community resource will provide businesses with training opportunities, access to technical advice and guidance in navigating the new economy. We know that for our economy to flourish, we also need to make high-quality childcare accessible for families of all backgrounds. The City and the Burnaby School District are working in partnership to develop childcare centres at school sites across Burnaby. Three centres are already in development, and this summer the City approved a $5.6 million capi- tal funding grant for four additional centres that will open before the end of the year. As we chart the path forward, we want to ensure our actions enhance the sustainability of our economy and the environment. Burnaby is committed to being a carbon neutral community by 2050, and our Climate Action Framework will help us achieve that goal. By building new sidewalks, expanding our bike network, creating infrastructure for electric vehicles and setting new policies for low-carbon construc- tion, we will continue to make Burnaby a great place to live and work. I want to thank the Burnaby Board of Trade and its members for supporting our community in challenging times. As a City, we are proud to call you our partner. Cynthia Boulter, Chief Operating Officer of the Greater Vancouver Foodbank echoes that sentiment and the impor- tance of cross-community collaboration during the crisis. “Our biggest challenge was finding locations to distribute food as the neighbourhood houses and community centres who were our site partners had to shut down their facilities due to COVID-19 restrictions. We worked closely with these partners including Burnaby Neighbourhood House to ensure they continued to receive food from us, and could in turn safely distribute it to seniors and people with mobility issues in their communities. Everybody worked incredibly hard to make sure that food got to people who really needed it, and at locations accessible to them. It re- ally takes collaboration to make that happen so quickly.” Antonia Beck, the Executive Director of Burnaby Neigh- bourhood House, illustrates the challenges faced by non-profits which had to navigate closures and restrictions without abandoning their core community services. “When the pandemic hit, we had to close our doors but we were working harder than ever as we pivoted our programs and services to respond to the community emer- gency. It’s been incredibly challenging but also rewarding.” Beck credits the deep connections in the community the organization has built over the years for their ability to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19 health crisis. Beck then goes on to acknowledge the challenges of how they will be able to deliver their programs moving forward given the fundraising challenges they face. Their annual holiday giftwrap program and gala event con- tribute significantly to the organization but are in doubt given COVID-19 restrictions. But as entrepreneurial as any business leader, Beck muses aloud about other ways to try and raise the funds necessary to deliver on the vital programs that serve seniors and youth in the community. “If there is a unifying theme to how Burnaby charities and frontline organizations came together so quickly it is clear that strong relationships are the foundation,” says Jeff Malmgren, who works in support of the Burnaby Primary Care Network (PCN), part of an initiative launched two years ago by the Ministry of Health to integrate health services to provide better care throughout province. “In Burnaby, unliklke in many other communities, the Pri- mary Care Network was seen as an opportunity to extend beyond health care and realize a community-held vision for wellness. The social agencies in Burnaby have worked together extremely well for a long time, and through the support of the PCN we were able to strike nine intercon- nected working groups that have strived to effectively meet community needs through the pandemic. The agen- cies together with the doctors from the Division of Family Practice and the local leaders from Fraser Health make for a strong collaborative partnership.” Underpinning all of these stories about overcoming the challenges of COVID-19 is the unique role community plays in our success. Rather than go it alone, in Burnaby we know our impact is greatest, our voice is loudest and our reach is furthest when we work together. Burnaby’s Economic Recovery Building Back Better Together he Burnaby Board of Trade’s Pres- ident and CEO, Paul Holden has an affable and approachable de- meanor, so when he says his office is open to talking to and listening to the concerns of business both large and small, he means it. And never more than now. As a West Ham fan, of course, you might find yourself having a meeting with Holden while watching the game and en- joying a beer at a local eatery, but he is listening intently and is deeply interested in what keeps businesses owners and lead- ers awake at night. “We have always been very focused on the concerns of business, but when COVID-19 hit we knew we had to provide information on resources and programs for all businesses in Burnaby, regardless of membership, as fast and as accurately as we humanly could. It was really important for us to listen carefully to the concerns of people impacted by the crisis and make sure all levels of government understood those concerns. We are talking about people’s livelihoods, families and lifetime investments. There is no halfway.” Having witnessed firsthand the impact the more crystal clear. Given how the COVID-19 health crisis had on business in business community and the community Burnaby and globally, Holden’s can-do at large are intrinsically linked, it was key attitude led him to realize that it was that we brought together a broad-based equally as important to lead business out team representing business, education, of the crisis and into recovery. goverment and community groups to lead the way forward, with the SFU “Our role as a convener, a catalyst and Wosk Centre for Dialogue, helping to a champion for business has never been facilitate the process.” 8 | BUR N AB Y BU S I N E S S D I R E C TO RY 2020/21 | B U R NABY BOAR D O F TRA DE
The result of this effort was the Burnaby Business Recovery Task Force and its 13-point plan that mapped out the areas of need for Burnaby businesses. The report identified 6 “quick starts” that were able to immediately fill critical needs including developing a made in Burnaby PPE list to sup- port re-opening of business, advocating for permitting and licensing changes to allow food service businesses to quickly restart with COVID-19 restrictions in place and working with the childcare sector and employers to support parents returning to work. It also proposed 7 long-term recommenda- tions for building resilency, including the Digital Development Assistance Program outlined below. “There is still a lot of work to do. But what gives me hope is the willingness of so many groups to come together, to collaborate, share ideas and put a plan in place to support economic vitality and growth in Burnaby. It makes me realize that Burnaby is a close-knit community and by working to- gether we can make things happen. ” says Holden. Burnaby Businesses Persevere Through COVID-19 s COVID-19 caused shutdowns and closures throughout our economy, Burnaby businesses were forced to pivot and find new ways of operating, build new revenue streams, and create new ways of giving back to our community. These are the stories of three Burnaby businesses which faced the challenges of COVID-19 head on, embraced the entrepreneurial spirit, and forged new ways of doing business. YVR Prep’s Simply Foods Simply Foods, a member of Metro Vancouver’s premier food commissary, YVR Prep, has seen its share of ups and downs since the pandemic took hold in March 2020. When the catering business ground to a halt they had no choice but to lay off their entire kitchen staff. But rather than shutter their doors permanently, the team dug their heels in and reached out to their network to offer a safe and affordable meal program to assist the community’s most vulnerable groups: low-in- come families and those experiencing homelessness. Collaborating with a local non-profit serving these populations, Simply Foods set out to provide a three- meal-per-day, seven-days- per-week program to help feed those living in temporary shelters and supportive housing centres via curbside drop-off. This effort created a safe way to help these vulnerable residents obtain a nutritious and balanced diet during a difficult time when many similar services were being suspended. “It’s been the most challenging time for all businesses. Fortunately, we pivoted to where the market need existed and that allowed us to keep our business open, bring back a number of our staff, and help meet critical needs of the community,” says Jason Wong, co-founder of Simply Foods and YVR Prep. Greenscape Design and Décor Greenscape Design and Décor transforms regular spaces into gorgeous green experiences with replica greenery that has won them accolades locally and abroad. With film production, special events and investments in commercial spaces halted during the COVID-19 shutdown, Greenscape had to pivot quickly. 1 2 | BUR N AB Y BU S I N E S S D I R E C TO RY 2020/21 | B U R NABY BOAR D OF TRA DE
