January 12 Introduction to Contemporary Art
What is contemporary art and when does it begin? What is the difference between
Modern and Contemporary? This first class in this series will answer these questions
while introducing some of the major preoccupations of art in the 20th century.

January 19 The Disappearing Object: Sculpture, Assemblage,
      Collage and Installation
The lecture will trace the evolution of sculpture in contemporary art through a
selection of artists to include Gordon Matta-Clark, Eleanor Anton, David Hammons,
Robert Gober, Cady Noland, Thomas Hirschhorn and Yinka Shonibare.

January 26 "This is Not to Be Looked at": Conceptual Art and
      New Media
In the 1960s very broad set of responses to modernist art coalesced around
what came to be called "conceptual art," art that challenged conventional
definitions and practices of art and sought to re-examine the age-old divide
        between art and life.

February 2 "It's Not Me, It's You": Relational Aesthetics
The subject of this lecture will center on an exhibition in 1995 called "Traffic" in
which the French curator Nicolas Bourriard decided to call a seemingly new approach
to art, "relational aesthetics," based on the idea of a viewer-oriented experimental
       encounter.

February 9 Art without Borders: Global Vanguards
In examining the work of global contemporary artists, this lecture will trace some of
the overlapping concerns shared as well as the artistic strategies that have come to
define what contemporary art without borders looks like.

February 16 Painting is Dead. Long Live Painting!
This final lecture in the series will explore painting in the latter part of the 20th
century and in the early 21st.

join us for a special screening of the 2021 documentary Chocolate Road, featuring
an introduction and Q&A with our favorite chocolate guru, Dr. Lee Scott Theisen.
This program includes a post-screening, “to-go” chocolate tasting.

Directed by Tanya Chuturkova, Chocolate Road is a discovery of where chocolate comes from.
Three renowned chocolatiers, Maribel Lieberman, Susumu Koyama and Mikkel Friis-Holm
take us through the process of craft chocolate-making, starting from the plantations and
all the way to the final chocolate piece. On their journey, each of them finds how important
it is to know the roots of their prime material, the cacao bean, and the social impact of the
people involved in the chocolate production chain.
