PROGRAM DESTINATION & VISITOR ECONOMY CONFERENCE 2021 Wednesday 26 May – Friday 28 May, Sails Port Macquarie by Rydges, Port Macquarie HOST DESTINATION STRATEGIC SPONSOR: ELITE SPONSOR: PARTNER: LGNSW.ORG.AU
WELCOME Cr Linda Scott, President, LGNSW I’m delighted to welcome you to the Local Government NSW (LGNSW) Destination and Visitor Economy Conference 2021, here in beautiful Port Macquarie – truly a jewel in NSW’s crown. This will be our 17th conference focusing on the vital destination and visitor economy. This year, for the first time, we are expanding the scope of the event by including a strong focus on the major role councils play in the creation of jobs and economic development in their communities. Councils directly employ about 60,000 people across NSW and create many new employment opportunities through our own economic development activities and procurement. Councils are a critical enabler of the tourism industry, worth $38 billion annually to NSW and responsible for every 1-in-14 jobs. Tourism relies on the roads, bike paths, footpaths, services and maintenance of attractions provided by our councils to preserve NSW’s amazing visitor drawing power. LGNSW is committed to helping build on past success and is advocating for greater State and Federal government funding to create even more jobs and drive a locally led economic recovery. We estimate that councils, when supported by our State and Federal colleagues, stand to create about 66,000 new jobs in areas such as roads, social services, social housing and preschool and waste and recycling. And because councils are the closest form of government to their communities, they know where jobs need to be created and can support their communities to make it happen. They are best positioned to make our regions memorable for visitors. Tourism jobs are especially valuable because they have a multiplier effect, creating jobs in cafes, accommodation and other support businesses. Our councils are in the best position to balance interests of existing residents with the destination and visitor economy and ensure it’s sustainable. The conference theme for this year is Creating Destinations for Living, Learning, Visiting and Investing. It is sharply focussed on equipping you to grow jobs and economic development in your communities. It is designed to inform and inspire and has traditionally proven to be an invaluable networking opportunity of like-minded people seeking to support and sustainably grow the destination and visitor economy. I encourage you to take the time to familiarise yourself with this program to make the most of everything on offer over the next few days. I look forward to positive outcomes that facilitate increased employment opportunities, a speedy economic recovery and upward trajectory for our invaluable tourism sector and local communities across NSW. Cr Peta Pinson, Mayor of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Welcome to the stunning Port Macquarie-Hastings region. With our incredible beaches and hinterland, our fabulous food and vibrant townships, we know you’re going to love it here. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is thrilled to host the 2021 Local Government NSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference and we can’t wait to show you around. There is so much to eat, see and do in Port Macquarie, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a favourite year-round holiday destination. For many of you, this may be your first face-to-face conference for some time, and it’s so exciting to see events such as this slowly making their return. So relax, enjoy catching up with long-lost colleagues, and stay COVID safe - our region welcomes you. 2 DESTINATION & VISITOR ECONOMY CONFERENCE 2021 PROGRAM
Welcome from the NSW Government - Destination NSW The NSW Government welcomes delegates from across NSW to the 2021 Local Government NSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference in Port Macquarie. The conference is a unique platform to discuss how the NSW Government can work with industry and local government to nurture and grow the visitor economy across the State. As we work toward the recovery of the NSW visitor economy, it is essential that we collaborate and deliver new initiatives and programs that will bring our industry back to its record levels. In light of the challenges of the past 18 months, we revisited the blueprint to guide our way forward, leading to the new Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 - a considered yet ambitious plan to achieving the 2030 targets with a bold new vision for NSW to become the premier visitor economy of the Asia Pacific. These goals are aspirational but entirely achievable if all levels of government and industry work together in a new spirit of partnership to chart a shared future. Regional NSW will be key to the future of the state’s visitor economy and is a focus of the strategy. The Government will strengthen its commitment to the regions with dedicated funding programs, industry support and continuing investment in visitor economy infrastructure so that regional NSW can generate and benefit from $25 billion in visitor expenditure by 2030, as projected. We hope your visit to Port Macquarie, a much-loved visitor destination and a region severely affected by the recent floods, provides inspiration, connection and shared enthusiasm to make NSW the premier visitor economy of the Asia Pacific. The Hon. Stuart Ayres MP Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Message from Elite Sponsor: HomeAway/stayz Welcome to Port Macquarie for the Local Government NSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference. Stayz, the Aussie holiday rental experts, as part of the Expedia Group, is proud to be sponsoring this conference for a fourth year. We’ve learnt from the challenges of 2020 and we know travel in the future will be different. The conversations and learnings from this conference will help us as we adjust to a new normal. For our part, we’ve worked with the World Health Organisation and World Travel and Tourism Council to develop protocols that give confidence to travellers so they can travel safely and enjoy anew those places they most love. We look forward to sharing our views on how travel can continue to be a driver of economic growth and community rebuild for New South Wales and beyond.
