IRONWOOD TODAY T wenty-first century Ironwood’s natural and built environments are vital elements in our community’s resurgence. Over the last three years, Ironwood has been gaining population, joining an emerging national relocation trend toward rural landscapes. Ironwood’s awesome natural setting and diverse small-town cultural milieu offers the ideal place to establish residence and create a business start-up. Symbolic of Ironwood’s past, the carved wooden miners seen at the left emphasize iron mining’s role in Ironwood’s 1880 beginnings. The National Register 1893 Depot witnesses to the thousands of immigrants who came here as well as to the extensive railroad grid that connected surrounding communities for almost 100 years. The train tracks are gone now, and underneath the quiet blanket of snow lies the Iron Belle Trail, a paved 10-mile-long walking and biking trail that heads east to Ramsay, MI. The Depot Park pavilion is the event center for our Farmer’s Market, Festival Ironwood and summer kids “meet-up and eat-up” daily lunch, while the lighted Jack Frost Festival Tree announces wintertime in “big snow country.” This blending of our historic heritage with present-day community life is a signature element in Ironwood’s socio-economic health, well-being, and visitor/relocator attractiveness. O BUILDING COMMUNITY ur town’s entrepreneurial spirit is fostered by educational opportunity, a health and wellness focus, an active civic volunteer culture, and supportive businesses and organizations. Ironwood offers K-12 schooling, Gogebic Community College career preparation, and, through the outreach of the Gogebic Range Health Foundation, active event sponsorship and community involvement. The city of Ironwood’s Community Development Department, along with the Chamber of Commerce and supporting service clubs, have as their common goal the fostering of a connected and inclusive community—a safe space where vision, talent, and energy build unity. Major festivals such as July’s Festival Ironwood, August’s Emberlight Festival of the Arts, and December’s Jack Frost Festival are augmented by a host of smaller happenings throughout the year, such as Downtown Ironwood’s monthly First Friday, where commerce, art, music, and craft showcase local skills and talents. Copper Peak Trail Fest Parades, races, arts performance, and a diversity of small groups such as Polar Bear Hockey, Easy Striders Running, Team Trivia, and Mystery Book clubs all infuse the Ironwood Community with connectivity and pride.
