Dear Parents/Caregivers,

December is just right around the corner and soon we will be saying goodbye to 2021 and welcoming in a
new year. We have had a wonderful school year thus far, full of learning and laughter, with so much more to
look forward to in 2022!
Just a friendly reminder it is that time of the year again when we are faced with unpredictable weather on a
daily basis. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather, especially for those students who do not ride
the bus. Students will not be allowed outside during the school day with a temperature/wind-chill of -27.
Indoor recess will be issued on these days. As for extreme cold days, please pay attention to M.B.C. Radio or
C.L.M.S. Facebook page prior to 8:00 a.m. for school closures or late starts. An updated voice message will
also be issued for the morning on our school voicemail at (306) 829-2012.
We appreciated your participation during the Virtual Parent/Teacher Conference on November 24 and
allowing your children to share with you their growth over the past three months. Our teachers believe in our
students and they do an amazing job of bringing out the best in them. I would like to thank our teachers,
E.A.’s and Support Staff for their hard work and dedication they show their students daily. Canoe Lake
Miksiw School is a great place to be because of the strong relationships we create and maintain with each
other.
During these uncertain times with COVID-19, the Canoe Lake Miksiw School Christmas Concert will be
held in the gymnasium with two separate times. The schedule will be 1:00-3:00 p.m. for elementary classes,
Nursery–Grade 6. Then the format will change for Grade 7-12 as it will run 4:00-6:00 p.m. It must be noted
that parents/caregivers will be allowed to attend but proof of vaccination will be required. There will be no
meal to accompany the concert as per protocols and precautionary measures. The schedule for the concert is
tentative and subject to change.
Last day of classes for students will be on Thursday, December 16, 2021. Regular classes and classroom gift
exchange will be in the morning. Christmas Break will begin with the conclusion of the Christmas Concert.
Classes will resume on Monday, January 3, 2022.
I would like to take this time to wish you and your family all the best during the upcoming holidays and in
the New Year. It truly is the time for family and memories to be shared for years to come. From my family to
yours, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Tansi,
We have been very busy since our last report. Report Cards are now complete for the first reporting
period and if you still have any questions, please reach out to discuss your child’s progress.
Law 30 are currently learning about the various aspects of the Criminal Justice System. We have
covered types of crimes and their consequences, statistics involving criminal law, alternative measures
for criminal justice and different theories for criminal law.
The Grade 10’s have been working on their first unit, The World Around Us. We are reading and
discussing several stories, poems, and essays that all look at various aspects of the environment and
how different things can have an impact on the environment. We are also working on our writing and
comprehension skills.
The English 30 A’s are nearing the end of their first unit, Canadian Perspectives. We have spent a great
deal of time learning about how different voices and perspectives impact the way writers write their
stories. We are currently going to begin writing our
first major, formal essay.
Please remember that if you ever need to discuss

Tansi everyone and happy December,
The regular biology class is going well and students are learning about Life and Organization. The
other class I am teaching is Forensic Science 20 and this is a new course to our school. Forensic
Science 20 is an elective class which focuses on the procedures and science behind crime scenes and
investigation. Students with regular attendance are doing well in this course and have created several
exciting crime scenarios and have plans to create larger scale interactive models.
Grade 8
Students are finishing our unit on Optics and Vision with the creation of a laser maze. Students will
continue to focus on building their foundational math skills and have shown great improvement - it is a
very exciting time to be a grade 8 student.
Coding
Mr. Wensley and myself, and other teachers have posted the sign-up sheet for a Coding and Robotics
club for grades 7-12 and we are excited to learn these 21st century skills with the students. We look
forward to posting about our success with this club in the future.

Tansi! Hello!
This past month we have been studying First Nations world views and Western World views. Students
in Native Studies 10 have taken interest and are really enjoying this class. I have had a lot of feedback
regarding identity and cultural beliefs. With quad 1 coming to an end and quad 2 beginning to take off,
I am proud to state that our students are really enjoying their time in art 10. We have looked at
different types of mediums and different types of art pieces from indigenous artists across Canada and
the US. I am looking forward to the rest of the quad and semester to see what our students are capable
of accomplishing.
In our special projects program our students recently went to Saskatoon to do a site visit. During their
site visit they were able to complete a few projects in electrical and carpentry, which they really
enjoyed. The look on their faces was full of enthusiasm and interest, the tour that the college Sask
Polytech offered was amazing. I can’t wait to get our projects started as our students are eager to learn
more about construction and carpentry.

What is FTV? • FTV is an initiative designed to raise the educational
achievement and participation of Saskatchewan's First Nations, Métis, and Inuit
students. It focuses on enhancing relationships between students and teachers,
creating structures and supports for teachers and school administrators to
co-construct teaching and learning interactions with students, and creating safe,
well-managed learning environments. FTV is based on research that was
conducted Communications Toolkit Module 9 with First Nations and Métis
engaged and non-engaged students, parents/caregivers, teachers, and school administrators about what
is needed in order to be successful as a First Nations or Métis student in school.
Students grades 4-12 are surveyed 3 times per year - questions are very specific, and as teachers, we
analyze the survey results and reflect and plan accordingly. Please review the comparison survey
results from our initial year in FTV 2017 and compare them to the fall of 2021. We ask parents to
complete the parent survey via our School Facebook page twice a year.
Ensuring students' voice is validated in the daily instruction in their classes -

Teachers have been studying high-impact teaching strategies and this year we are learning the effective
use of connecting students' prior knowledge to the curriculum outcomes. Teachers collaborate weekly
and share best practices.

Tansi,
Like most years November has been a very fast month. The focus for November and December is to
try and get much school work done as possible before the Christmas Break. Land based learning is at
a standstill for now until we get going again after the Christmas break. For teachers the focus is on
language and culture in the classroom. Teachers continue to implement teaching treaties in the
classroom program along with cultural activities.

Finding the Best Math Station for your Class
What math centers you choose to use in your classroom is based on teacher preference and student
needs. It doesn’t need to be fancy or elaborate. I would recommend starting very simple and adding
more as you feel comfortable.

For instance, the most common math center is the one above where teachers have some students
work on fact fluency, while others work independently at their seats, and still some work on
hands-on manipulative to make the concept more concrete. The last group would work with the
teacher or whatever the teacher decides.

In the stack model, there are five groups. The teacher meets with the students, offers technology
math practice, application practice, critical thinking skills, and hands-on practice.
Math Catalyst Continued

The guide model is very similar to the others. It contains games, application (using what we know),
independent work, fluency practice, and journaling. However, it doesn’t have the opportunity for
students to meet with the teacher. Instead, the teacher can move around and individually confer with
students.
Again, the model you choose is completely up to you and your students’ needs. Some teachers prefer
to have fewer students in each center, while other teachers want fewer centers.

Thank you,
