BY CHRISTINE BEYLEVELDT Re-imagine Gift Giving GIFT GUIDE FOR 2020 For years we’ve been shying away from extravagant gifts and shifting more toward giving the gift of experiences to our loved ones. Creating memories that are long-lasting are some of the most cherished gifts we can offer, but we are living in extraordinary times, and giving the gift of experiencing life is going to be harder this year more than any other. Movie or concert tickets, cooking classes and getaways aren’t on the table this year. Here’s what you can do instead to make this holiday season a special one. 1 FOR THE PERSON YOU MISS Who hasn’t appreciated receiving 2 FOR THE PERSON WHO NEEDS SOME TENDER LOVING CARE The best thing about gift baskets 3 FOR THE PERSON WHO CAN’T SIT STILL One of the biggest trends of 4 FOR THE PERSON WHO LOVES MAKING MEMORIES If you were planning a get- a care package when they’re a is that they’re easy to assemble! 2020 has been a shift away from together with loved ones over long way from home? BY CHRISTINE BEYLEVELDT Chocolate Lava Cake There’s nothing quite like a spongy cake with a gooey chocolate centre to warm the soul, which is why chocolate lava cake is the cherry on top of a special holiday meal. At a time when everyone will be indoors, perhaps with a few candles lit on the windowsill illuminating the softly falling snow outside, we all need a bit of warmth. • 6 oz semisweet • 1/2 cup salted butter 1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. baking chocolate • 1/8 tsp salt 2. Grease four ramekins with butter and lightly coat • 1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar • 2 tsp cocoa powder with cocoa powder. This will enable you to loosen • 1/4 cup all purpose flour • 4 eggs the lava cakes with ease promptly after baking. 3. Put 1/2 tsp of cocoa powder into each ramekin and tilt on its side, patting it lightly as you twist it so the cocoa powder evenly coats all sides of the ramekin. 4. Finely chop the chocolate and melt with butter in the microwave, stirring every 10 seconds until evenly mixed. 5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, confectioner’s sugar and salt. 6. In another bowl, whisk together two whole eggs and two egg yolks. REAL CONVERSATION STARTERS 7. Combine all three batches together, first stirring the flour mixture into the melted chocolate before adding the eggs. Use a whisk or a spatula The party has taken to the kitchen.
