JOY & SORROW JOYS, SORROWS AND THANK YOUS There’s no point denying that 2018 was a busy year… We shared “Congratulations”, “Well done”, “Sorry for your loss”, “Are you ok?” and “Get well soon” so many times during the past 12 months, there’s just too many to remember! We’ve visited friends in hospitals or at home following medical procedures, incidents or illness and provided shoulders for support in times of sadness or loss. We had weddings and engagements and even welcomed a few littlies to this world. There is always something to be grateful for! We are thankful to those who we get to share our lives with, for those who serve with abundant energy and smiles, just like our bar ladies Jo-Anne and Jolene and even those who makes sure our tummies are full, thank you Rista and the team from Click a Jaffel! CLUB RIDES TAR RIDE TO RIDGEWAY RACEBAR RIDE LEADER SUE COETZEE SWEEP ABE COETZEE NUMBER OF BIKES 30 NUMBER OF PILLIONS 14 Wow, what a turnout! A morning that everybody thought was going to be bitterly cold at 7 degrees and rain forecasted, turned out to be warmer than expected. A big surprise awaited me as I arrived at the BP Garage to see the turnout of a large group, it was most over whelming as I truly thought I was going to have a small group due to the cold weather. 30 Motorbikes and 44 riders in total, consisting of 7 guests, 8 pillions, a surprising number of 8 lady riders (NICE!) and the balance were our 21 men. Once we arrived on the R42 it was a quick re-group, and then a couple of us had a blast along the way, unfortunately heading back on the R50 the ride was a little slower than expected due to traffic, but we all arrived at the Ridgeway Race Bar without losing a rider on the turns which was pleasing. It was great excitement to get the riders inside to experience something very different, but something was missing which was such a disappointment, and that was, no waitress dressed in motorsport jump suits, they just weren’t there. Sorry guys! Once we were all seated the waiters attended to us quickly and presented our V6 and V8 hamburgers with a smile. Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za A big thank you to to all, you were an awesome group with great camaraderieship. Thank you to the rides committee members for your support and to Morné helping me with the maps. Abe, as always, you did a great job being my sweep. SUE COETZEE MOON RIDE TO BERNIE’S JOINT VIA BRAMLEY CHILDREN’S HOME RIDE LEADER SUE COETZEE SWEEP ABE COETZEE When there’s a need, we help. This time it was 42 school bags for the kids at Bramley Children’s Home. 9
CLUB RIDES As part of the July moon ride to Bernie’s Joint, Sue took fellow moonriders via Groenkloof and handed over the school bags – happy smiles all round! From there it was on to Bernie’s Joint – it was quite a chilly ride to a truly unique venue and turned out a great evening, enjoyed by all. Did you miss the ride? Head over to Bernie’s Joint and experience this, it is something different! Was a really different venue and lovely evening, thank you! GRAEME CARTWRIGHT Thanks Sue it was excellent, we enjoyed ourselves. Twee GS’e, 10
NUMBER OF BIKES 11 IAN TRAUTMANN NUMBER OF PILLIONS 3 SIAS WAGENAAR NUMBER OF VISITORS 10 On 18 August 2018 a few brave souls left the BP Garage in Centurion for the Brooklyn Brothers Restaurant at Glenfair Boulevard Center in Lynnwood. It was a really cold and miserable early evening, but everyone was in high spirit and looking forward to the night out with their club peers and family. Ride leader duties was performed by me with Sias Wagenaar attending to the tail end sweep duties. The group consisted of eleven bikes of which three carried pillions. The ride to the venue was a typical urban route which snaked through the different suburbs ending at the venue without any incidents. The group almost doubled at the venue as another ten club members and family awaited the brave souls on their motorcycles. Live music helped to set the vibrant atmosphere at the restaurant and the cold was soon forgotten and everyone had a good time laughing, chatting and eating the night away. BEN PRINSLOO DIRT OVERNIGHTER Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za TO ROOIBERG RIDE LEADER EGBERT OLIVIER SWEEP JOHN DYASON Saturday 18 August arrived and I could not contain my excitement any more, Rooiberg overnighter trip has arrived and off we went to meet everyone at the Sasol garage just of the N1 in Zambesi Drive. 12 Riders, one pillion and included in the equation, a little BMW G310 GS. 13
CLUB RIDES Away we went towards Bela-Bela on the eastern side of the N1 highway through Dinokeng, where a lot of game were seen all the way towards Rooiberg. In Bela-Bela we stopped for a brunch at “Toeka se dae” to fuel ourselves before we take the second part of the trip. We started off with the first couple of passes all the way to Rankin pass where we took a well-deserved break. As promised a good combination of technical sections with some good dirt roads, some rocky parts and some sand as promised. We arrived at Ukuthula Lodge just before 16h00, just in time to shower, have a cold one and to watch the rugby. An awesome braai dinner was served and soon thereafter all the tired bodies disappeared. We were treated to a nice hot breakfast and everyone departed on their own. The star of the weekend? The little G310 GS! It is a very capable off-roader! EGBERT OLIVIER SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER CLUB NIGHT We hosted our neon-inspired club night on 7 September and the club house even sported a disco ball and UV lights! Glow sticks came in handy and everyone enjoyed being “young” again! Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za DIRT RIDE TO BLACK HORSE BREWERY RIDE LEADER GERHARD MATTHEUS SWEEP JOHN DYASON NUMBER OF BIKES 19 NUMBER OF VISITORS 4 A Magaliesburg ride is always a beautiful ride, and Black Horse brewery is always a great venue. What made this ride even better was that it had a green route all the way to the venue, as well as an optional orange/red loop over Breedtsnek for the adventurous riders. For a dirt ride our group was quite large with 19 motorcycles in total that left BP in the direction of Magalies. About halfway there we were stopped by traffic officers for a quick chat, and to check licenses while we’re at it. It is a good idea, and it is law, to have a valid license for yourself and your bike at all times. So, 18 motorcycles, 15 without traffic fines, continued on our merry way, and one motorcycle stayed behind with his new friends from JMPD (and waiting for a licensed trailer to take him back home). 14
CLUB RIDES Apart from a puncture, the morning went past without any other incident and we could really appreciate the majestic Magaliesburg mountains (it is 100 times older than Everest by the way). We were surprised to see most of the group successfully went up and down Breedtsnek as if they forgot we said it is an orange/red section – well done guys! Just before we reached our venue we got another surprise: our unlicensed teammate was back in the group. We guessed he finally convinced his friends “if you love someone set him free.” JOHN DYASON TAR RIDE TO VAN GAALENS KAASMAKERIJ RIDE LEADER RICHARD HUSSEY SWEEP SUE & ABE COETZEE Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za NUMBER OF BIKES 24 NUMBER OF PILLIONS 7 24 Bikes and 31 people set off in chilly sunny weather for the signature ride. The route took in N14 to Diepsloot turnoff, then the R511 towards Harties. Just before the junction with “previously Church Street” extension, we encountered the dirt rider group engaged in some friendly banter with law enforcement officers. (The area recently had all speed limits reduced to 80 or even 60 kms/hr...!) We turned the corner toward Pelindaba and regrouped to avoid tar riders becoming off-roaders by accident. The route continued to join the R512 and turned right across the Harties bridge - they are building a new pass towards Brits there. Right down to the Engen garage 4-way stop and left on the R104 towards Rustenburg, just where the new pass will come in, we turned another right (I had forgotten this one) and made our way nto the N4 towards Rustenburg. 15
CLUB RIDES We stopped at the Total Petroport Magalies for a smoke break and leg stretch, I said 15 min but it always seems to take 30! Then we set off again, taking the Mooinooi offramp to avoid the Buffelspoort toll gate. We were running a little late so I did not stop at Buffelspoort or Olifantsnek dams, making up time to get to Van Gaalens before the brêkkie menu shut down. The route back from Olifants Nek always seems to take ages and this day was no different. This stretch is 120kms and it takes 80 minutes at least at posted limit speed. (The speed limits have also been reduced on the R24). The ride leaders arrived by 11h15 and the sweeps got in around 11h30 due to slower riders quite correctly riding within their capability and gaining experience. Great grub was had by all and we departed in dribs and drabs around 13h00. Thank you Abe and Sue for doing duty as sweep! Just to correct my memory, there are THREE right turns... all at T-junctions. RICHARD HUSSEY Had an enjoyable ride today even though the weather was very cold with strong winds. Started off with a chilly 5 degrees but the company was great and warmed the day. On the plus side we didn’t have to lean into the bends as the wind did the work for us. Thanks to everyone that made it another memorable ride. SARAH KENNETT Thanks for another awesome ride Richard, cold, windy and testing at times but thoroughly enjoyed, well done to all and Sue/Abe for sweeping. TOM NEL LESSONS LEARNED 01. On the second leg, it would be useful 02. For the ride home, a basic route for for slower riders to set off in an arranged ‘newbie’ riders to follow would help them advance group 10 minutes ahead. They as there are not always experienced riding would be caught and overtaken en route buddies on their timeline to accompany by the main group to arrive closer together them. (Apologies - I knew exactly where Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za at the end venue. we were, but others didn’t!) MOON RIDE TO CAPPUCCINOS RIDE LEADER RC BRAND SWEEP EWALD FOCK NUMBER OF BIKES 19 NUMBER OF PILLIONS 2 NUMBER OF VISITORS 5 On 22 September 2018, RC as the rideleader and Ewald Fock as the sweep took BMW “moon riders” on a memorable ride from BP Centurion, via N1/R21 and Nelmapius Drive to Cuppacinnos at Southdowns Shopping 16 Centre.
CLUB RIDES The ride eventually panned out to be a cross between a sundowner and moonlight ride. The 23-member strong contingent was well received by the Cuppacinnos staff and were seated on the deck. The members could therefore enjoy the sunset and the lights of the city while the staff ensure that orders were taken and delivered promptly. A nice family atmosphere was created and all the members with their children enjoyed the company and the food. Even so when it was commented that some of the riders wanted to stay “late”. Everybody left the restaurant in high spirit and special thanks was expressed for the BMW members and the Cuppacinnos management. New friendship bonds were also formed which makes these moon rides memorable. Thanks to everybody that made the ride possible! RC BRAND TAR OVERNIGHTER TP HAENERTSBURG RIDE LEADER GUSTAV SCHOLTZ SWEEP THEO AND DEBBIE NELL NUMBER OF BIKES 11 NUMBER OF PILLIONS 2 After being fully booked for 2 months in advance after offering this overnighter for the first time, time to depart has finally arrived – everyone shared their excitement and tribulation on the WhatsApp group but turned out that every misfortune was handled in time. Pierre sorted his battery problem and Debbie organised herself a loan bike at a Thursday evening braai! The itinerary was set, the route was planned to include some towns for the Alphabet Challenge and yes, we missed Immerpan. 13 Enthusiastic go-getters (11 riders and 2 pillions) arrived at Rose Haven Shell – departure 06h30 for 07h00 and for a few members it Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za was an early rise to ensure to be filled up and to be on time for departure! Roelf and Riana decided to take it slow as Blikkies (the 310 and new addition to the GS family) still needed to be “run in” and could only handle the speed limited of 100km (only for now). The other felt it was safe to take it to the speed limit and enjoy the ride. Our first break was breakfast at Ruby River Lodge close to Loskopdam and filled up our mean machines to ensure arriving in Haenertsburg on time – we arrived in Haenertsburg at 14h00 and everyone was very impressed with their living arrangements at Pennyfather, this venue is highly recommendable. Blikkies arrived ± 60 minutes later after some decided to enjoy the real heritage (the old cemetery), or to take a power nap and then the ones who decided to explore the heritage of Haenertsburg in the form of some pub crawling! We all met up at the Iron Crown for supper which was enjoyed in a delightful manner – 17
CLUB RIDES this is the amazing thing so many different people enjoying a specific thing – FOOD – followed by drinks, loads of humour and jokes to be shared – we are after all a club of shared riding pleasure! After the “slow steaks” (yes, they call it slow steaks as its served with a few snails and garlic butter – yum-yum) fish, burger and salads we retired to the Scholtz abode for a night cap. This cap was served in a special printed tin cup “Haenertsburg 2018” compliments from GusProp (Gustav & Sandra) to thank everyone for joining us and making this trip memorable! An early night was in sight for everyone as an early start was intended for Gustav, Theo and their harlem! Others decided to take it easy and went straight back on the N4. At 07h30 the adventurers decided to go long way around and took on the road through Tzaneen and Letsitele. We enjoyed breakfast at the Mad Boyz Café with loads of curios and an awesome elephant scull that walked the earth many moons ago. We took a quick photo at Magoebaskloof view point (Melanie was a bit of a slow steak and had a roll over – luckily nothing serious) and then the JG Strijdom tunnel. We all arrived home safe after travelling ±930km to enjoy something we all love! Thank you Gustav (Leader of the pack), Theo (Sweep 1) and Debbie (Sweep 2), for keeping all safely tucked in line. To everyone else: Judie, Melinda, Melanie, Roelf & Riana, Pierre & Antoinette, Gerrie & Louise – you are just an awesome bunch of people! Till we meet again! Thank you all for this marvellous tip! So, within 30 minutes I found Dullstroom Backpackers and they had availability. Yeah! 22 beds with crispy white linen, towels supplied, fully fitted kitchen, braai area, fireplace, TV and all the modern amenities. But, we had to share bunkbeds! CLUB RIDES We bought our wine festival tickets (Trudie, her sister Adrie and daughter Sarita had other plans for the afternoon) and the preparation was done. Breakfast at Appalloosa Spur at Alzu was booked, accommodation booked, food for Saturday evening’s braai was arranged and Harrie’s Pancakes expected us for breakfast on Sunday. Great excitement mounted as the days became fewer and our WhatsApp group was busy! We met at BP Centurion where everyone (Melinda met us on the way) received their limited edition “Backpack & Wine” stickers, buffs and a single playing card – see, we might as well have a poker run as well. We were ready to go! Paua and her sister Suzi and Adrie went by car, so we had Sandra and pillion Leonie as 2-wheel sweeps and two vehicles too. We travelled on the N1, N4 and made our way to a very busy Spur, it helps to have a booking in place. Breakfast was great, and we were ready to go. We continued on the N4 and took the off-ramp to Belfast before heading to Dullstroom. Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za 20
CLUB RIDES After finding a bunkbed partner and roomies, unpacking our panniers, putting away food and drinks and changing into something more comfortable we were on our way to explore Dullstroom on foot. There was enough wine, olives, chocolates, blue bubbly, sherry, shooters, gin and whiskeys to taste as we made our way through Dullstroom. We even had a private chocolate and wine pairing session - that was just fantastic. We shopped! From clothing, pottery, wine, condiments, ginger liqueur… you name it. If we could’ve towed a Venter behind a bike, we would’ve filled it! We finished the afternoon with – you won’t guess it – a tea tasting! We returned to the backpackers and as the weather was playing up, we knew it was time to braai. And we did just that. I have never seen so many braai-meesteresse and supervisors around a braai before! Dinner was fantastic - there were salads and bread to feed an army, Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za not to mention the bacon-wrapped mushrooms and halloumi starters! Over many glasses of wine and shooters we enjoyed the evening in each other’s company, listening to music and dancing. If you ever want to excersize your stomach muscles, then be in Trudie’s company, she’s THE best joke teller in the world! Verona was the lucky poker winner and received a wine cooler for her two pairs. We were “encouraged” to end our evening by our host Billa and off we retired to our dorms. Coffee and rusks were favourites from early on Sunday morning. After packing and playing tetris to fit the shopping, we were on our way to Harrie’s Pancakes for breakfast. That venue just stays a favourite! Then it was time to head home. We impressively lined-up the bikes in the main road, took a couple of pics and off we went. The group split as some were in more of a hurry to get home, but we all arrived home safely with many stories… not to tell! Our braai masters – who said 21 we can’t braai… and supervise?

CLUB RIDES OCTOBER We did it! On Ocober 12th we hit 1001 likes on our Club’s Facebook page! Yeah! Are you following us? If not, head over there and “gooi” a like! OCTOBER CLUB NIGHT At the October club night Jo Rust gave a brief talk, launching her book “Woman alone around Africa – A tale of courage and overcoming the seemingly impossible” DIRT RIDE TO CULLINAN RIDE LEADER MARNUS PIETERS SWEEP GUSTAV SCHOLTZ NUMBER OF BIKES 21 NUMBER OF PILLIONS 1 We arrived to a beautiful morning at the BP Centurion Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za usual-departure-point and after a nice cup of coffee and the pre-ride briefing the 21 bikes, with Jessica as the sole pillion with Andries were ready to go. It was great to see her sporting a new pair of riding boots, especially after her previous ant hill incident. But those boots were not going to look that new for very long, because this time of year the roads are still quite dusty in anticipation of the summer rains. So with everyone lined up and ready, I realised that I had the completely wrong routes loaded on my GPS. I recently got another identical unit and somehow, I managed to not have the Cullinan Dirt ride routes on my GPS. What a disaster... But I know the first part of the route pretty well, so we set of with most of the group none the wiser of my predicament. Even though I did the recce before the ride, it was two weeks before and the latter part of the ride was a bit fuzzy - especially with many turns to negotiate. 23
CLUB RIDES But a boer maak ‘n plan, and that was what I was doing on the way to the first gravel bit where we stopped. While everyone was deflating tyres and switching off their ABS and traction control, I was stealing waypoints from Gustav, who fortunately had the route loaded on his GPS. Ok, crisis averted - we have a plan. We made our way through the small holdings east of Pretoria alternating between dirt and tar and eventually pushed through Mamelodi after the group voted unanimously for the alternative start route. It was a bit chaotic negotiating the 4-way stops through the town but soon enough we were out in the open. We were treated with the most beautiful dirt roads and making good progress. The Twee Spruite Route was spectacular as always and you had to keep concentrating in order not to miss sharp turns after blind rises. Dust was plenty, but we regrouped often to prevent the group from not stretching out too far. After the scenic route we were treated with a rather nasty corrugated and sandy road. We had one incident where a rider suffered from talent failure and took a bit of a rest. A couple of other riders also reported close calls with big eyes, but there was a sense of accomplishment making it through that section, albeit a bit tired at this stage. Little did they know that we had a sandy 2-spoor section ahead, and after a breather we set off to conquer our next challenge. There were some more riders taking a rest at this section, but eventually we managed to cross the dry river bed and took another well-deserved breather. The ride was starting to take its toll on the energy levels and we knew that some food and refreshments were waiting for us. So, we opted to cut out the remaining dirt road section and take the fastest route through Refilwe to Cullinan. We were lucky to meet up with some of the Tar group that were finishing up their visit to the Cullinan Premier Hotel and we promptly ordered our own replenishment and sharing our stories over a couple of cold ones. I thoroughly enjoyed this ride with a bunch of lovely people. It was great to see a couple of new faces and I hope they will be joining us on future rides. And my hat off to especially the ladies that rode like champs and for everyone that pushed through the tough bits! It was awesome! The route was taking us on great roads in the direction of Bronkhorstpruit before heading through to Cullinan. Let’s say it was a fast- paced ride, 120km and no stops. We arrived at Timeless Café at Premier Hotel Cullinan about 45min after leaving BP Centurion. It was a great morning and the food was great. We were even entertained by a piano player. Thank you to Sue and Abe for being sweeps and everyone who joined on the ride. CLUB RIDES After our morning ride to Cullinan we decided to stop at Imagine Cafe in Bronkhorstbaai for some of their delicious cake and coffee... again! Each time I am there I notice something whacky and new. It’s aways an enjoyable place to stop and stretch your legs. IAN TRAUTMANN DEBBIE NELL SIAS WAGENAAR ANNUAL SKILLS CHALLENGE Saturday 13 October at LA Sport in Gezina Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za This year’s Annual Skills Challenge took place at LA Sport in Gezina and (not-open-for- business-yet) Gas Monkey Pub & Grill was the perfect venue for the day’s events – a children’s play area, ample parking, viewing points and shade were welcomed by both competitors and spectators. This year’s event was different - not only was it held at a new venue with great new obstacles - carefully planned by instructors from Country TRAX - the format even made provision for a Newbie Class. On arrival the contestants received limited edition buffs and an enamel mug, perfect for that first cup of coffee! Water, fresh fruit and home-baked rusks were served under the lapa while registration took place. 25
CLUB RIDES After registration, Chairman Marnus welcomed all before Vice Chairman Willem explained the day’s procedings. After splitting in groups, it was all systems go and the groups made their over to the areas. The Newbie class’ participants were not scored but had the opportunity to participate with the rest of the more experienced riders, all under the watchful (and helpful with advice where necessary) eye from Country TRAX’s instructors. It was a great opportunity for all! A burger and chips lunch was served on the patio while the scoring took place to determine the Top 10 Men’s and Top 3 Ladies which were set to participate in the Bavarian Challenge after the break. The top contestants could walk the course with the instructors before the event and at the start there was a call for a volunteer who could do the course a second time should he/she Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za wish – Cliff van der Westhuizen put up his hand and was the first man on the course. After everyone participated, Cliff decided to give it another go and managed to grab first place! Well done! Our Dirt Rides Captain and Secretary John Dyason finished second with seasoned rider Eugene Fourie finishing in third place. Freshly returned from the Honda Quest Adventure, Jana Botha scored first place in the Ladies Bavarian Challenge with Christelle van der Meulen and Lezanne Truter taking second and third place respectively. It was a sweet moment when Lezanne’s daughter watched her compete and said, “Dis my Mamma daai”. Congratulations to the Class winners and all the Newbies who participated, for now your “Certificate of Participation” is just the first step in your Skills Challenge preparation! We wish to thank the sponsors – Bavarian Motorcycles for the amazing prizes and vouchers, Country TRAX for the training course, LA Sport 4x4 Megastores for the voucher and Metzeler for making the day possible. To Deon from B&D Systems Engineering, thank you for the branded enamel mugs (and water) and Gustav from GusProp for your sponsorship of water. To Gas Monkey Pub & Grill, thank you for welcoming us although you were not officially trading at the time. To all our members who assisted with scoring and other tasks, thank you! Till next year! Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za The itinerary comprised not only gravel roads (including lots of sand), but also a stopover at 10 towers along the way handpicked by our experienced and knowledgeable ride leader, the one and only James “Gravelhunter” Jenkinson. We left BP at 06h45 on the cool Saturday morning on our way to the first few towers which are on our doorstep in Pretoria. As promised, the initial route consisted of “technical tar” riding to visit the Voortrekker Monument, Webb tower, Verlatenheids tower, Wifi tower, Boom tower and Cross tower. Some riders unfortunately missed the Voortrekker Monument (tar riding is not that easy!), but after a re-group at Webb tower was die Kaap weer Hollands. This served as a nice warmup for the rest of the day, because thereafter it was mostly gravel until 18h30. Each tower we visited had its own interesting access road, especially those constructed high on a koppie, which offered quite technical riding conditions. For lunch we stopped at an oasis in the Dinokeng game reserve called Arlington Brewery and Restaurant– recommended for a future stopover. Apart from offering craft beer, they also serve tower sized burgers that will arouse the sand rider in any biker (and we needed it for the road thereafter). As a bonus tower, James threw in the “Hand tower” at Loskop dam which was built to commemorate the construction of the Loskop dam wall which was done entirely by hand. After Loskop we headed to Tondeldoos where we were warmly welcomed by Joe from Bushboys Camp & Cottages. JAMES JENKINSON 28

And it is the best trip of the year. 19 bikes and 1 pillion started at BP Centurion. Each time that I lead a trip, new and old faces attended and enjoyed the fun. The gravel roads where amazing and well mastered by everyone. Three new playground spots where identified and everyone enjoyed testing their skill. As promoted, the route was long and did not fail to deliver surprises. No incidents to report and one bike was recovered due to mechanical problems. The lunch at Thabaledi was in time and good value for money. All home just after 17h00, exhausted but satisfied! A big thank you to our sweep Egbert and John, Marinus and Rudi who assisted Barend along the way. The discipline from each one in the group to stop at all the turns, was remarkable. Job well done! CLUB RIDES TAR RIDE TO FOCHVILLE RIDE LEADER EWALD FLOCK SWEEP RC BRAND NUMBER OF BIKES 23 NUMBER OF PILLIONS 3 NUMBER OF VISITORS 3 Our group consisting of 23 motorcyclists, 3 pillions and 3 guests, departed at 07h20 from BP Centurion. The temperature was a cool 14°C and rose to a moderate 22°C towards the end of the trip. We started in a 5knt wind which picked up to about 18knts along the way, but it didn’t bother as it were mostly a tailwind. Things changed drastically as we approached Klerkskraal dam, with direction changes we now experienced very strong side-winds, causing for some interesting riding angles and styles, but the riders handled everything the wind could through them like pros. We were riding in a staggered formation, and I rarely before experienced riders so structured, none of the usual zig-zag ridings was needed to fix the staggered formation because someone advance, fall back or push in. Everyone behaved and kept positions for the entire trip. After 125km, we had a short pitstop at Diggers-inn for a drink or coffee, and to stretch our legs or go for a tinkle. The hostess was amiable and told us, some weekends they have a biker’s breakfast at R40pp which they set up under the trees on the shore of the farm dam. It’s a beautiful venue to visit every so often with your friends for breakfast or lunch. We left Diggers-inn just before 10h00 by which time we were a little thin in the middle and looking Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za forward to a big breakfast. We arrived at Momento and received a friendly welcome from the staff dressed in X-mas outfits. The owner reserved us a very nice and cozy private area with seating for about 34 people. We had a beautiful view over the dam, breakfast was delicious, and one could eat much as you like. We were a great bunch of gents and ladies, and it seemed everyone enjoyed the day, the ride, the breakfast and company, I am sure many participants will revisit this excellent venue. I’d like to thank everyone who participated, making it a fabulous day, and special thanks to my sweep, RC. EWALD FLOCK 31

CLUB RIDES DECEMBER YEAR-END FUNCTION YEAR-END FUNCTION As Hanlie said, “Thaaaats Months of planning and preparation was wrapped up in 2 days. Only 2 a wraaaaaaaapppp!” days!! UNBELIEVABLE. Spoke & Piston | BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, South Africa | www.bmwclubs.co.za From 30 November – 2 December, 66 members made an excellent decision to join us for a FUN-filled, or was is rather a SUN-filled, weekend. We ate, swam, danced, ate some more and enjoyed liquid refreshments yet again. Friday was our braai night at the Waterval Lapa and on arrival guests received their welcome packs filled to the brim with goodies. Although we had a very late supper, the food was super-duper and everyone was filled with excitement for what was to come. Saturday was enjoyed by various kinds of leisure. Some decided to take a ride to the beautiful surroundings of Bela-Bela while others decided to take on the sun and the resorts many attractions. Believe me the water slide and swimming pools were the favourites – I also believe that some met “Oupa Sonnetjie” and got their fair share of suntanning for the day. Saturday night’s preparations started early, tables, décor, food, drinks, prizes, games and of course our lovely DJ Bernadette, all taking their places to make sure that this an unforgettable evening. The guests stared to arrive at 18h00 and were welcomed with a welcome shooter to get them in the mood. 33
CLUB RIDES After a short welcome speech from Marnus, members dug into the delicious dinner and we all enjoyed good wine and excellent company. Then the games began… AFTER a little boy received probably the most amazing (early) Christmas present ever! Callen Duddy is not our youngest member, but he already has his first BMW - the first Bavarian imported battery operated LC in the country and yes, it went through a full PDI, nogal. The surprise by Philip and Anne made not only Callen, but dad Donovan and mom Alex’s evening. Loud cheers from all around. Trivial pursuit was played with loads of lucky draws/prizes to be won. Balloons were popped, and the crowd cheered the participants as eight great prizes were on the line - only eight lucky winners remember. Congratulations to the winners and if you don’t know, balloon popping is quite an aggressive “sport”. The dance floor opened, and we danced till late and even random strangers joined in on the dancing and singing – ai, it was a lekker place to be. It was also the perfect time to capture special memories with friends and family.
