Joy and peace at Christmas One name associated with the birth of Jesus was the name of promise from Hebrew scripture ‘Emmanuel’ – ‘God with us’. In Jesus’ birth this promise was fulfilled. As we celebrate this continued presence of Emmanuel among us, may we experience the joy and peace of Christmas, blessings in the New Year and a safe and enjoyable break. Christopher Stock, Principal
Campus Leaders Firstly, congratulations to our students on making it through to the end of 2021. They have now worked their way through two years of uncertainty, challenging and remote learning. We cannot underestimate what they have managed to achieve. Given this is a once-in-100 year pandemic, even we as parents and teachers could not have been expected to know how to cope or what to do as we navigated the uncertainty and change of the year. We have been so impressed with the way in which students have returned to school after so many weeks away and thrown themselves into their studies, exams, assessments and social groups. Congratulations to the students involved in the Year 9 Extended Investigation projects this week. It was inspiring to hear the variety of driving questions they had and the amazing wealth of knowledge which they brought to the table. I hope that parents and families were also impressed by students’ final presentations. Our Year 8 Surf Days were also held last week and it was wonderful to hear of students’ courage, persistence and excitement at what was, for many, a new experience. Thank you to the students and teachers who worked hard to stay engaged through the last lessons of the term. We have witnessed classes creating games, engaging in team-work activities, playing kahoots connected to learning themes, thinking about kindness, and using their skills in practical ways. Well done, everyone. Your break this year is very well deserved. Our Year 12 Mass and Graduation was held last week at Notre Dame Campus. After a year which offered even more challenges than usual, it was wonderful to see our final year students able to celebrate together. Parents were able to join us for Mass and then students proceeded to our dressed-up agora to a market-like atmosphere of food trucks and music. We wish all our graduands great success in their future endeavours. Our year finished with our end of year Liturgy on 3 December, which at Notre Dame included the official opening and blessing of our new Perigueux Builidng. This fabulous facility will host our new library, along with staff study and lounge areas. The library will be open from day one and we look forward to students being able to utilise this fantastic space. Congratulations to all involved in the planning, development and construction of this terrific resource. During House Assemblies on the last day, recipients of awards for Excellence in Academic Achievement or Personal Best Effort were recognised and presented. Congratulations to these students for their hard work and dedication throughout the year; we encourage all students to strive to ensure their personal best in 2022. In the next week or so, you will receive your child’s semester two report. I encourage you to review it carefully and spend some time with them considering what worked well this year and what habits your child may need to change to experience greater success next year. We ask parents to support their children to spend some time over the break ensuring that they are ready for a positive and organised return to school next year. Lots of students this year grew out of uniform or found it hard to get to the uniform supplier since lockdown. There is now more than 8 weeks to ensure that students have everything they need for next year. Please ensure that your child does not get any piercings or haircuts which will contravene our policy upon their return. It is important to the community that everyone is treated equally in this regard and that the rules apply to all. At the end of this newsletter is the last article from Michael Grose’s Parenting Ideas for 2021. This week’s article is about parent self-care, which is so important. It is hard to parent effectively when we are exhausted and stressed. We would encourage you to take a moment to read this interesting article and see if there are ways you can practice greater self-care. We hope our students take some time over the break to remember to practice gratitude, as we regularly do at school. Despite this being a very difficult year in so many ways, there is still so much to be thankful for. We encourage parents and students to continue to find moments to tell the people in your life for whom you are grateful how much you appreciate them. That is one way you are able to show gratitude and share kindness with others. We wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope that you are able to celebrate with family and friends this festive season and make up for some of the time we spent in lockdown this year. May your break be safe, happy and holy and may your children return rested and renewed in 2022 for our first day of the 2022 school year, Wednesday 2 February. David Barr, Chris O’Malley & Kelley Revelman
Leader of Mission Integration Graduation for the Class 2021 On Thursday 2 December the Class of 2021 celebrated their Graduation. Archpriest Michael and Fr Binh celebrated a beautiful mass with the reoccurring theme of gratitude for all the graduands received over their time at Emmanuel, appreciation for those who supported them and hope in a bright future on the horizon. During remote learning the College sent our Year 12s a care pack in the lead up to exams. Included in this pack was a single jigsaw piece to symbolise that although they are alone, they are a vital part of their Emmanuel cohort. Students were invited to return the jigsaw piece at graduation to symbolise their shared bond and commitment to one another. We wish the graduate class of 2021 a life filled with love, hope and faith. Closing School Mass Fr John and Fr Greg led us in our celebration of our closing school mass for Year 7-9s at Notre Dame and St Paul’s Campuses respectively. It was a wonderful occasion where the students were invited to reconsider the words of St Oscar Romero which formed our Mission Theme for 2021, ‘Aspire not to have more, but to be more’. Much like St Oscar, the students were sent forward in this season of Advent as people who rejoice and people of courage. Christmas Appeal Congratulations to all staff, students and parents who donated generously to our St Vincent De Paul Society Christmas Appeal. As a community we raised over $1500, which will be used to fund Christmas presents for those children whose families are experiencing financial difficulty at this time. Opening of Périgueux Building On Friday 3 December we officially opened the Périgueux Building at Notre Dame Campus. The Périgueux Building is a multipurpose facility, housing the student library, meeting and collaboration spaces, a green room, staff study and lounge. Périgueux was named after the French village where Blessed William Chaminade was born in 1761. Chaminade lived in Périgueux with his parents and 13 siblings, until the age of 10, when he left to join the minor seminary of Mussidan, on the outskirts of Périgueux. Four years later he made private vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He was ordained a priest in 1785. In 1790 after the outbreak of the French Revolution, he moved to Bordeaux, where he spent most of his life. We hope that the Périgueux building will be for our staff and students, what Périgueux was for Chaminade, a place of family spirit, learning, faith and discernment for their life vision. Wishing you a wonderful and holy Christmas with your loved ones, Mark Sciberras ‘Aspire not to have more, but to be more’
VCAL Headstart The 2021 VCAL Head Start Program was a great success. Students from both NDC and SPC participated in 6 days of “a taste of what it is to be in VCAL”, engagingd in numerous activities designed to highlight the strengths of VCAL and build relationships with peers and teachers. Students completed their Food Handlers Certificate, demonstrating high levels of skill in the kitchen as identified by the trainers involved. Let’s face it, culinary skills are never wasted so we encourage parents to put them to work at home. Students were led through the process of writing CVs and Cover Letters, measure and design of the Trade Training Centre, and the steps and resources available in finding and securing an employer for a structured workplace placement. The project that stole the show and really highlighted strengths and characteristics of our VCAL team was the planning, construction and problem solving used within the Catapult unit. In small groups students competed against each other in the construction of a trebuchet. Students were required to work together to build and modify their own catapult to be fired for the greatest distance. Students were assessed on their ability to work in teams, problem solve, persevere through challenges and finally construct a successful catapult. All groups successfully completed this unit with a close competition delivered on the final day. It was great to see the students so involved and engaged in the Head Start program. Thanks to all the staff and students involved in such a strong start to VCAL. Daniel Taylor Learning Leader VCAL
Year 7 2022 Orientation at St Pauls Tuesday 30 November saw near 150 boys, the incoming Year 7s, join us at St Pauls Campus for their Orientation Day for 2022. This was a celebrated return to the end of year, welcome to our newest students, and one anticipated by staff and students alike. They had a jam-packed morning and it has set them up well for their Transition Days in early 2022, Wednesday 2 – Friday 4 February, when they official- ly begin their time at the College. The day started with a gathering in the McCoy Hall where the students were able to gauge the size of their year level and meet the other students who will be joining them in the new year. For many of our students who come from small to medium size primary schools, this is the first indication of the significant change the move into secondary school can be. The day progressed with numerous activities to help the students set themselves up well for a good and confident start in 2022. They participated in a school tour, met the other students allocated to their Houses and Homerooms and enjoyed some sports games. Our Senior Student Leaders assisted information sessions, helping the students understand and manage their start in February as well as answering any questions that arose. The Year 10 Peer Mentors ran teambuilding activities to help the boys feel more comfortable with those other students in their Homerooms as well as ensuring the incoming Year 7s had a friendly senior face to welcome them next year. The students also met their House Leaders and the School Student Support Team who will continue to help their transition and support them throughout their time at Emmanuel College. Transitioning to secondary school can be as daunting for parents as the students and there are some very useful resources available. Raising Children, Reach Out, Headspace and School Kit have free, accessible resources online to support parents/carers to support your children in this important next step in their school lives. The students received in their goodie bags an information magnet with some of the key dates for Term 1 2022, including their start day, Camp dates and when term ends. When the students join us in February next year, they will have a 3 day transition program to best help them settle into secondary school, including workshops from Headspace, supporting by our Pastoral and Wellbeing Team. All at Emmanuel College were excited to meet the Class of 2027 who started their time with us with incredible enthusiasm, grace and values and already fit very well into the culture and community at SPC. Alice Power Pastoral Leader SPC
Year 7 2022 Orientation at Notre Dame Orientation for the incoming Year 7s at NDC campus was held on 30 November as we welcomed over 300 students to our College. It was a special day for the newest members of our community who were eagerly welcomed by staff and student leaders. It was a very busy yet fun filled morning that will prepare them for the start of 2022 and specifically for their transition days in early February. Polite and eager students gathered in the Quiroga hall where they learnt which house they will be in next year. Students also got the opportunity to meet other students in their house and other houses who will be undertaking their high school journey. There were a number of activities throughout the day such as Q & A, school tours, getting to know you games and a number of sport sessions. During these activities students got the opportunity to meet their House Leaders for 2022 who will be supporting them not only during their transition but also throughout their high school journey at Emmanuel College. It was an opportunity to make new friends and get comfortable with their new surroundings. The student support team also introduced themselves and spoke about the pastoral services at the College. Student leaders from the College were on hand to welcome and support the students on this special day by answering questions and assisting with their preparation for 2022. For some, recess was the highlight of the day when the students received a Zooper Dooper which was perfect considering the warm day we had. At NDC, we are certainly excited to welcome the newest members to our college community and look forward to getting to know each other a little bit more next year. Nick Blassis Pastoral Leader NDC
Student Leaders of 2022 Leader Day As Emmanuel farewells its 2021 Leaders, we eagerly prepare for 2022 with the Senior Student Leaders. On Wednesday 1 December some of the leadership group gathered at NDC to enthusiastically work towards setting goals and planning how to realise them for the entire student body. Students focused on understanding more deeply our Marianist charism, and what it means to live out the portfolios of: • Educate for Formation in Faith • Educate in Family Spirit • Provide an Integral Quality Education • Educate for Adaption and Change • Educate for Service, Justice and Peace and the Integrity of Creation. Students engaged in reflections on some of the important leaders of our Marianist Tradition and moved this forward to unpack and discuss the positive leadership qualities they can learn from such examples. Students collaborated in their portfolios in cross campus teams to brainstorm ideas and to look at hurdles they may experience. The College Leadership Team worked with the students, listening to their ideas and providing valuable wisdom. The students developed strategic plans to involve as many students as possible to realise their goals. They acknowledged the great progress of all past Student Leaders and are just as eager to use their Leadership positions to serve the Emmanuel family. It was a privilege to work with the Student Leaders of 2022. Alice Power, Daniel Velardo, Nick Blassis, Maree Cody Pastoral Leaders
Design & Technology News In Year 8 Electronics I have learnt how to use a soldering iron, connect wires and how to use equipment safely. We have been working on making a traffic light. It has been a very fun project. Thomas Thornton In Year 8 Electronics I learnt how to solder, use the hot glue gun, and connect wires. We also learned how to make a rubber band car. What I really enjoyed was doing activities with my friends and working together as a team. Zachariah Raffoul In Year 8 Electronics this year I have learnt about a simple circuit and how to solder and strip wires. I have also learnt how to use a hot glue gun and solder efficiently and safely. Hugh Curtis What I learnt during Year 10 Systems and Design was soldering wire on a board. I found the subject interesting because of the experience that it gave me to improve on my skills. I would recommend the subject as it gives you the opportunity to work inde- pendently. You really get a lot out of it. Oliver Catlow I found Systems and Design interesting because of the fun and beneficial work that I accomplished throughout the year. The subject inspired me to make my own projects at home and work more independently and more efficiently. I would definitely recom- mend the subject as it provides the opportunity to gain more experience for future work and business opportunities. Abdalla Trad From a personal standpoint System & Design was useful as the skills I developed from the class will help my future career as I wish to be an engineer. Throughout the entire year we learnt how to develop an idea and actually create it. It helped me understand how careful you must be in your planning stage. I highly recommend this subject to any- one who would wish to learn new skills and techniques. Phoneake Nithikwangwan Oliver Catlow & Abdalla Trad I found Systems and Design to be a very interesting subject in itself. I learned new skills in the art of soldering and handy life lessons on safety around wood and solder. Shival Chatiar I like it because my teacher was good. It is really fun and good as it helps you fix something you have. If you want to be a tradie when you are older, I would recommend this subject. Oscar Welch Phoneake Nithikwangwan & Neel Dodia

Student thoughts on Digital Technologies I liked Digital Technologies because it let my knowledge of the digital and technology world grow. Over the past year, I found all the topics we covered and projects we completed were very interesting. We’ve learnt about online cybersecurity, coding, databases, VR and AR all through different platforms. Each area was unique in the way we had to learn the knowledge that was covered, and the work we had to com- plete. This class has helped me develop my knowledge of the online world, and I know I will use some of these skills in the years to come. Aidan Azzopardi Digital technologies this year provided a fun and meaningful challenge that allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of coding and other aspects. Learning how to code was my favourite part of the year as it allowed me to take my own approach to problems and add a certain creative aspect to my creations. Digital technologies has helped me overall develop a greater work ethic and attitude when it comes to solv- ing problems. All in all, Digital Technologies has been a fun and meaningful class to me that has provided me with essential skills in this grow- ing world. Ethan Donovan I liked Digital Technologies as I learnt a lot of information about coding, and I was taught a lot of useful skills. I also found Digital technologies interesting as there was lots of new information that I enjoyed learning such as coding in Python, using Microsoft Access and making a small Virtual Reality game in CoSpaces. I would recommend students taking Digital Technologies if they’re interested in coding because I learnt a lot of useful knowledge that I feel other students would like to learn too. In Digital Technologies we learnt about a lot of different tech skills that can be effectively used in the real world in the case of a hacker or malicious software. Digital Technologies has helped me by teaching these skills to me so I can prepare myself for the real world. Liam Zahra Jenny Tocchetto
Student thoughts on Food Studies Food studies during year 10 was the most fun I've had in any subject. It allowed me and peers to connect and work together. Food studies is a subject that is vital in anyone's life. This allows students to take away what has been learnt in class and apply it, into the real world outside of school. Katia Srbinovski Food Studies in 2021 has been different due to lockdowns and restrictions. But that didn't hinder us from learning about health, nutrition and food in connection to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. When we were able to cook, the foods tended to exceed expectations by turning out better than first thought and enabled us to learn about food options for certain dietary requirements. INSIGHT S Parent self-care matters Parents are known for putting their childrenʼs needs ahead of their own. With the mantra of ʻbe involvedʼ in your childʼs life a dominant parenting message, itʼs now common for parents to neglect their own social and wellbeing to give their children the best possible start in life. This selfless approach is commendable, but questionable if it means you are constantly stretched, stressed and tired. Parenting is draining. Kids by their very nature take more than they give. Even the most loving, a ectionate child will exhaust you at times so itʼs important to replenish, refresh and reinvigorate yourself. Parenting author Maggie Dent says, “If we donʼt care for ourselves, not only do we run the risk of parenting less e ectively and compassionately, but we are not modelling self-care for our children.” Taking time for yourself seems obvious, however, the reality for many parents is that they are hard-wired to prioritise the wellbeing of others. Start by giving yourself permission. Setting strict boundaries around key self-care activities help to make sure self-care happens. Turning occasional self-care into an ongoing habit is a great way to make sure you look a er yourself. First, you need to give yourself permission to prioritise mental health and wellbeing, at least some of the time. So, what self-care activities should you be prioritising? Get physical Exercise is great for both mind and body. It releases endorphins, the feel-good hormone that enhances mood and helps put you in a positive state of mind. Exercise releases cortisol, the stress hormone, which builds up gradually over time, leading to anxiety and depression if not managed. You donʼt need to go to the gym to get the benefits of exercise. A brisk daily walk is an excellent self-care strategy for busy parents. Itʼs a ordable, accessible and has the bonus of taking you outside, which has added wellbeing benefits. St ay social Alfred Adler, the father of individual psychology, maintained that the people who lived the most content lives paid close attention to their social lives. When children come along, a parentsʼ social life can easily play second fiddle to that of their children. Alternatively, social media becomes the main mode for staying in touch with friends, which is a poor replacement for face-to-face contact. One way of staying social is to schedule activities such as playing sport, joining a book club or sharing a co ee that keeps you connected to other adults. Be mindful Staying in the present moment, even for just a minute or two, can help you better manage parenting stresses. Engaging your senses is a good way to relax and find some inner peace. Enjoying the present moment, or mindfulness, can be practised by taking a walk, listening to music, or a taking a five minute meditation. Breathing exercises help reduce stress, so incorporate deep breathing into your daily routine to help stay fresh and alert. Seek out play If you think that play is just for kids, then think again. Everyone needs activities in their lives that sustain them and bring them joy. Itʼs important to expand the definition of play to include hobbies and interests such as music, collecting things, making, tinkering and performing. Playful activities that contribute to parent self care are freely chosen, fun and create a state of flow so that you become lost in the activity. Playful activities boost your mood and help you manage the challenges and enjoy the pleasures of family life. Decide t o savour If you feel that youʼre always in rush, the chances are that you donʼt have the opportunity to savour anything. Whether itʼs the first cup of co ee in the morning, snuggling up to your child at bedtime or reading a favourite book before bed, commit to savouring something and make it a daily habit. In closing Taking care of your physical, psychological and social needs helps you be the best parent you can be. Set aside time for self- care even when you feel like you donʼt have a single second to devote to yourself. Experiment with di erent self-care activities to figure out which strategies work best for you, your family and your lifestyle.
