1. J&K govt grants Divisional Status to Ladakh region the pioneer Fulfilling long-pending demand of people belonging to Ladakh region Jammu & Kashmir Government approved creation of a separate Administrative/ Revenue Division for Ladakh. This division will comprise Leh and Kargil districts with its headquarters at Leh. The Government has also approved creation of the posts of Divisional Commissioner (Ladakh), Leh and Inspector General of Police (Ladakh), Leh. Currently, the Ladakh region forms a part of the Kashmir Division of Jammu & Kashmir. 2. 3-day Krishi Kumbh to begin at Motihari The three-day Krishi Kumbh is being organised in Motihari, Bihar. Over fifteen thousand farmers across different states and about two hundred agricultural scientists are participating in the Kumbh. This is the largest Krishi Kumbh of Eastern India. The Governor Lalji Tandon and Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh will jointly inaugurate this Krishi Kumbh. The objective of Krishi Kumbh is to promote modern techniques and diversification in agriculture that could help in doubling farmers income.
3. ECI launches Voter Verification and Information Programme The Election Commission has launched a Voter Verification and Information Programme (VVIP). The program has been launched for citizens for verifications of their names, new registrations, changes in the voter details and corrections in the Voter Id Cards for the upcoming General Elections 2019. The Commission has also set up Contact centres in all the districts and the Voter Helpline number is 1950. Points to Remember Chief Election Commissioner: Sunil Arora 4. India to host 13th Conference of Parties(COP) of the Convention on the conservation of migratory species of wild animals (CMS) The 13th Conference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on the conservation of migratory species of wild animals (CMS) is going to be hosted by India during 15th to 22nd February, 2020 at Gandhinagar in Gujarat. Representatives from 129 Parties and eminent conservationists and international NGOs working in the field of wildlife conservation are expected to attend the COP. Points to Remember Conservation of Migratory Species of wild animals (CMS) is an environmental treaty under the aegis of United Nations Environment Programme. The Conference of Parties (COP) is the decision-making organ of this convention.
India has been a Party to the CMS since 1983. 5. Centre launches dedicated Asiatic Lion Conservation Project The Centre government has launched a dedicated Asiatic Lion Conservation Project with a budgetary contribution of around 98 crore rupees to strengthen the conservation initiatives. Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change approved the project for financial years 2018- 2019, 2019- 2020 and 2020-2021. The project envisages scientific management in coordination with multi-sectoral agencies for disease control and veterinary care for overall conservation of Lion. Points to Remember The Asiatic Lion, endemic to Gir landscape of Gujarat, is one of the 21 critically endangered species identified by the Ministry for taking up recovery programmes. 6. RBI Slaps Rs 3.5 Crore Fine on Corporation Bank, Allahabad Bank The Reserve Bank has imposed a cumulative penalty of Rs 3.5 crore on state-owned lenders Corporation Bank and Allahabad Bank for violation of various norms.
Allahabad Bank said the RBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 1.5 crore for not monitoring end use of funds, among other violations. Corporation Bank said that RBI has imposed an aggregate penalty of Rs 20 million on our bank due to some lapses in monitoring of end use of funds and exchange of information with other banks . Points to Remember Earlier this week, RBI had imposed penalties on Axis Bank, UCO Bank and Syndicate Bank for violation of various norms. The gross penalties on these three lenders amounted to Rs 5.20 crore. 7. Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinches silver in men's 67-kg category Youth Olympics gold medallist Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinched silver in men's 67-kilogram category. It is the India's second medal in the EGAT's Cup International Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The promising Mizoram weightlifter was behind the gold winner, Deni of Indonesia. Points to Remember Previously, world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu had won a gold in the women's 48-kilogram category with a total lift of 192 kilograms. 8. Oscar-nominated British actor Albert Finney dies at 82
Oscar-nominated British actor Albert Finney has died aged 82. He passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side. He was a five-time Oscar nominee who began his career at the Royal Shakespeare Company before making his mark in film. His big film break came as "angry young man" Arthur Seaton in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. He went on to star in Tom Jones, as Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express, Erin Brockovich and Skyfall.
