June 2021 Dear Parents, Staff Members & Learners “It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.” ___________________________________________________________________________________ COVID-19 We would like to take this opportunity to share our deepest condolences with all our families that have been both directly and indirectly affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. A reminder to parents to please ensure that your children adhere to strict COVID-19 Protocols outside of school as well especially during the school holiday period. 1
EXAMS, EXAMS, EXAMS!!! The past three weeks seem to have flown past and we can hardly believe that we have already come to the end of our mid-year exams. Our learners have continued to put their best foot forward this term and we are holding our breath for a wonderful set of results from them all. Life Science Practical – Testing for Protein SANBS BLOOD DRIVE Our second blood drive for 2021 will take place on Wednesday 11 August from 09:00 – 14:30, please diarise this date and invite your friends. Anyone over the age of 16, and who weighs more than 50kgs, is eligible to donate. COVID-19 recovered individuals may donate and anyone else who is in good health. The SANBS blood reserves are VERY low and we are appealing to all our parents, friends and family members to take part in this incredibly worthy cause. All COVID-19 protocols apply. FIRST FOOD DRIVE 2021 Thanks to the generous donations from all our BESA Families, we were able to pack a total of 36 food parcels. These parcels will be distributed by Mr Jacobs to those who are less fortunate within the community. 1. Melanie is from Brackendowns. She just had her second baby and is currently on maternity leave. Her husband lost his job and she's not sure if her employer will still keep her in their employment as she struggles to get in on time. She says thank you to everyone at BESA for the help received. 2. Vincent from Katlehong. One of he first recipients of our food parcels is well known, he even calls Mr J "father" and is extremely grateful. He's married and has 2 kids, they are really struggling. 3. Riaan is a familiar face at the Pick n Pay traffic lights in Brackenhurst. He remembers the bucket he got from BESA last year. He used to stay across from the Hardware store, but recently moved to Alrode. He is extremely grateful for the gift he received from BESA. 4. Christo from Alberton North, has a wife and two sons (one who is disabled) to support. He works as a car guard at a church on Sundays. He is very grateful for the gift received from BESA. 2

If your contact details have changed recently, please advise the admin office (admin@besacademy.co.za). Understanding report effort levels: It is important for parents to know how much effort a learner has put into each subject. Often this kind of mark serves as a better reflection on a learner’s performance than a grade average does, especially where group sizes are small, like ours. An effort grade (on the 7 point scale) will be fairly subjective as it will be an individual teacher’s opinion. When arriving at an effort grade for a learner, the learner’s approach over the entire term is considered. Taken into consideration are things like: homework completed, work presentation, meeting deadlines, overall time management, perseverance, conscientiousness, general work ethic, general results etc. Please remember that the Effort Grade does not have to equate to the Term Mark. A learner might have a Term mark of 45% but he has worked exceptionally hard to achieve that mark and as a result might score a 6 (70-79%) for effort. Parents Morning will be held on Saturday 17 July from 08:00 to 10:00. All possible precautions will be taken and all safety measures adhered to. It will indicate on the reports where teachers would like to meet with specific parents, however, all parents are welcome to attend. 4
GRADE 8 APPLICATIONS FOR 2022 Parents who intend enrolling children for 2022 must please ensure that you apply with us as soon as possible. While preference will be given to current families, the normal enrolment procedure applies to all applicants. Application forms can be obtained from the school office or by email request (admin@besacademy.co.za). Please do not delay! Please help us in sharing the following date for upcoming entrance exams, any families who may be interested in joining us should please contact the admin office for more information. Saturday 7 August 08:00 – 11:30. GRADE 12 WINTER SCHOOL PROGRAMME We have decided to postpone our Winter School Programme to September as a result of the latest wave of Covid infections. Online school is not an option as it is not effective when trying to do practicals or portfolio work. We encourage our Matrics to make use of these holidays to rejuvenate and prepare for their upcoming preliminary examinations in August. OUR SCHOOL ROAD It is important that drivers adhere to the speed limit of 30 km/h on our school road. We have had reports of vehicles ‘zooming’ up and down which is potentially dangerous to other drivers. The imposing of the speed limit is three-fold: 1. It ensures the safety of other road users and pedestrians on the road. 2. It reduces damage to the road. 3. It reduces the amount of dust thrown up by vehicles. Please adhere to the speed limit for the wellbeing of all road users. Should you identify a vehicles speeding or driving recklessly, please forward the license plate number to the admin office. BESA OUTREACH BESA Bear Annual Challenge Continues in 2021 The lasting effects of the Covid-19 pandemic means that this initiative will be even more important in 2021. We look forward to trying to beat the record set last year and thank our parents in advance for your continued support. While we will not disregard store-bought items, we would like each of our learners to commit themselves and their time to the making of these scarves and blankets, and to remain personally involved in the project. Only knitted and crocheted items will be considered for community service hours. Watch our BESA BEAR CHALLENGE BAROMETER grow at the tuck shop. BLANKETS – Crocheted / Knitted This year we would like to make our blanket drive two-fold - in the past we have supported the children’s homes, TLC and Door of Hope, which we would like to continue to do. The sizes of blankets needed for this drive would be small/baby blankets measuring roughly 100cm x 120cm. BLANKETS – Matthew Downs Blanket Drive Many of our families are aware of this incredibly special drive and have participated in it over the last 4 years, this year is no different. Please see the letter attached for more information. 5
SECRET SCARVES These homemade scarves, created with love, will be donated to those people who are desperately in need of warm items of clothing to combat the winter months. The scarves will distributed throughout the community. On average, each should be about 150cm long and 20cm wide. BESA FOOD PROGRAMME FLOUR POWER - Gemma West Every Friday morning sandwiches are prepared for learners in need at Aloe Ridge Primary School. We would love for more learners to get involved in this initiative and in the preparation process of these sandwiches. Donations are also welcome in the form of peanut butter, margarine, jams, spreads, bread, fruits and individual juices. We thank you for your generous hearts! We look forward to all the wonderful things Community Outreach as a whole plans to achieve this year and hope for the continued support from our BESA family. Any queries can be directed to Mrs B Kirchner. MUSIC LESSONS Piano and Violin lessons take place at BESA every Monday afternoon. We would love for more learners to join in and either learn to play a new instrument or brush up on skills already learnt. For more information please contact Mrs Büser. 6

Learners who fail to do so will not be allowed to park their car on the school premises. FAREWELL Mr Loukakis, what a blessing you have been to our BESA family. Your passion for teaching and love for your students will leave big shoes to fill, both literally and figuratively. Thank you for filling our school with laughter daily, you are most definitely going to be missed. Thank you for your vision of the AP Maths Programme which you have spearheaded and will continue to assist with for the remainder of the year. This vision has added so much value to our school and we will be forever grateful. We would like to wish you everything of the best for your new adventure. We know that you will give the same energy and enthusiasm to your family business and we pray for blessings and continued success. – BESA Management “Mr Loukakis, we met at hello, we’re about to be apart with farewell, but life is about cherishing the past, facing the present and moving ahead towards new milestones with your family business. Best wishes for your future. In my heart you will always be. - Mrs Coetzee IN MEMORIAM BESA’s oldest and longest resident pupil has unfortunately crossed over the rainbow bridge. Our dear and faithful dog, our BESA mascot and unofficial therapy pup, passed away on Wednesday 23 June, aged 11. Our “Miss Lady” was very much part of the ‘BESA Family’ and touched so many souls with her companionship and emotional support. She will no doubt be remembered lovingly by all who have had the privilege of being part of BESA. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mr Fourie, for your unconditional love for our beautiful girl. You have been her constant over the years and she knew how loved she was by you! And to Miss Archery for opening your home to our special pup, without hesitation during her final months. You have such an amazing soul ma’am and we know that you and Ruth made Lady’s final months so very special. Thank you for being by her side in her last moments, we know she felt your love for her and crossed over the rainbow bridge in peace. Lady… Driving to school every day with Lady commanding the front seat, made the day seem a little brighter. When we got onto the dusty road, she knew BESA was her domain, her home. We could never open the doors fast enough for her to jump out and she would excitedly leap towards her familiar places to check if they were the same as she had left them. 9
Learners would smile with delight when Lady chose to greet them by leaning her head against their legs. Gentle hands would caress her head, and they too would know that they could conquer the challenges of the day. Unknowingly, instinctively, Lady became the comforter, seeking out the ones who needed extra loving in the morning, during the day and when they went home. Lady knew who was silently hurting, she quietly touched those aching hearts and made everything better. She was not a noisy, barking dog, she found different ways to communicate. Just by lifting her snout other dogs knew their limits with her! She would nudge her head under your hands when she needed a cuddle. She would stand by the door when she wanted it open and even knew how to bang on the door with her paw to get a more urgent response. Her beautiful wide eyes spoke volumes and the best would be when she leapt about excitedly. WHAT AN INCREDIBLY INTELLIGENT DOG! Thankyou Lady for touching our hearts. Thank you Lady for making our lives shine brighter. Thank you for letting us share our days with you. You have left a large impact on BESA, Lovely Lady, and you live on in our hearts! ~ Mrs Archery 10
