                Supporting Student Success
                     Instruction, learning and social-emotional
well-being have always been the keys to
student success at FRE. The last two years
under the pandemic have reinforced the
necessity for extra supports to meet student
                  needs.
Deborah Shaver Through our schoolwide Second Step
Principal curriculum, students participate in daily
                  social-emotional learning where they acquire
skills for learning, empathy, problem solving, emotion
management, making friends, etc. FRE’s Positive Behavior
Intervention and Support program provides the foundation
for school expectations. Being positive, kind, hard-working
and respectful are at the heart of our PAWS program.
Multi-tiered Systems of Support and Collaborative
Academic Support Teams support teachers as they use
assessment, data, and instructional strategies to meet the
needs of individual students. Additionally, our intervention
teacher and Extended Learning Time provide more
intensive short-term support. Advanced learners receive
instruction from GATE certified teachers using Depth and

learned about how the fluttering, bright,
colorful lights fill the night sky in some parts

                Going Places!

                 Mrs. McCarty’s
                 4th grade class.
                    “Oh, the places we’ll
                 go!” declared the students
                 at Olivewood. COVID has
Alex Perez created hurdles for our
    Principal world, but students are
                 fearlessly racing toward
their dreams, one goal at a time. At the
beginning of the year, students took a
  survey about the multiple intelligences.
  The students embraced their individual
  intelligences, researched career options,
and wrote about their future goals. Sonia
shared, “I want to use my intelligence
to become a lawyer”. Anthony wrote,” I
will reach my goal of becoming a chef
because I will try my best, and I will work
hard each day.” Elisa declared, “I want to
use my smarts to become a doctor to help
people who are sick. If I want to go places
I will need to read books, be confident,
  and stay healthy.” Olivewood students
  are inspired about their futures.

has worked in SVUSD for just
over 6 years. She started her
                 teaching journey at Del Cerro,
Jennifer Kajdasz but has been at Rancho Canada
Principal for the past 6 years mainly
teaching 5th grade. What is her
favorite subject to teach? Math because she
knows how difficult math can be for students.
She enjoys seeing those lightbulb moments
with students when it just “clicks”. She loves
listening to all of their strategies for problem
solving and thinks it’s incredible hearing
how their brains work and think critically
at such a young age. She readily admits that
her students constantly teach her new ways
of thinking. Her favorite part of teaching is
the relationships she gets to build with her
students. Mrs. Breidenbach fosters a safe
community in her class and we are thankful
  to have her on staff!

states, “I want my students to choose friends
wisely and make healthy decisions and be
confident and equipped to do so.”
Mr. Todd Schulman (right) was nominated as

to learn in my class is to love or enjoy coming to
math. If a student wants to go to math, they will
learn more.” Mr. Schulman has truly established
himself as a leading educator at RSM.
We are proud of both teachers for their

               Climbing to Success
                    Nathan Monte scaled his
                first climbing wall when he
was 12 and was hooked. Soon
                after, he joined a climbing
                team and began to compete.
                To maximize his potential,
Glenn Giokaris Nathan wanted more time to
Principal climb and needed a flexible
                school schedule. He enrolled
in the Virtual Academy (SVA) three years
ago. Now in his senior year at SVA, Nathan is
one of the best climbers in the nation. In his
last competition, he placed among the top 30
 climbers in the United States!
Nathan confesses that he is not a
 “natural” climber. Through hard work,
bordering on obsession, he has steadily
improved, training 20 hours a week. Nathan
explains that getting to the top of a wall on
which you have fallen 100 times before is
addicting. Next year, Nathan plans to move
to Salt Lake City, to climb and to pursue his
goal of joining the USA Climbing Team.

               Canyons”! The Trabuco farm is
Lisa Paisley proud to have a new piglet in
Principal the family. Our older Kunekune
               pig, Hamlet, has been needing
extra engagement, and we were in search
of a buddy pig. We found the sweetest little
Kunekune piglet to bring home to our farm.
He arrived right in the middle of the cold and
rainstorms, so he had a cozy heat lamp and
got to spend evenings at the farmer’s and
principal’s homes. The students have had so
much fun naming Peaches and watching him
pour his water into his food. He also makes
fun noises, especially when you pick him up.
The campers nearby must love us. Right now,
Peaches is thriving adjacent to the baby goats
and getting to know his big brother slowly.

                     Catherine is a 12 year
old girl that is talented in
                  drawing. She has a brother
                  named David. David is
   Yoona C. diagnosed with autism.
                  David and Catherine’s
mom would go to OT. Catherine would
  sometimes come to. That’s where
Catherine met a friend called Jason. Jason
is a teenage boy in a wheelchair that can’t talk. They first
meet when Catherine is bored and draws Jason. Jason
catches her and tells his mom with his communication
book. Jason’s mom gets angry, but that soon leads to
Catherine making word cards for Jason. Catherine also
meets another person named Kristi. Kristi is a “cool” girl
as said by Catherine. At first, Catherine is embarrassed to
tell Kristi she has a brother that has autism and a friend
who is in a wheelchair. Will Catherine learn to value good
friendships? Will she find out what is truly important to
  her? Read to find out!
