Lana Merha Mrs. Brodhagen’s class were
Principal presented with an oil spill challenge.
Given a bin of water with vegetable
oil floating on the top, students were asked to
research, design, and test a device that would
clean the oil from the surface of the water. To
create oil boomers and skimmers, groups were
given a brown bag of materials that included: a
sponge, small pieces of a water noodle, aluminum
foil, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, a straw, one nylon
knee sock, and scissors. They learned that no
matter how well constructed their device was, not
only did oil get everywhere, but it was also close to
impossible to clean it all. This hands-on challenge
opened our Bobcats’ eyes to the catastrophic
ramifications that an oil spill can have on the
  environment.

                STEAM Night at McPherson!
                    McPherson was excited to
                bring back the school’s annual
                STEAM night. Sponsored by the
                Education Foundation, McPherson
                staff hosted over twelve engaging
                STEAM events for students and
Brenna Godsey families. Some of the most popular
Principal events were the reptile room,
                3D printing, eSports, robotics,
bubble making, STEAM Cartooning, and the
“Yo-Yo Guy”. To start the evening, there were
food trucks and the traditional McPherson
egg drop. Using limited materials to build a
cushioned container for the egg, there were
only five successful entries out of 200 that kept
their egg safe as it was dropped from the roof.
The highlight and culmination of the evening
was a demonstration of how a hot air balloon
works and watching the annual ball drop for the
Education Foundation fundraiser. The night was
a great success, and the McPherson community
came out strong to engage in all the fun STEAM
 related activities!

                   Olive Ocelots are becoming college
                and career ready! Our students,
                staff, and families have continued
to work hard and grow throughout
the 2021-22 school year. As an AVID
                Elementary Showcase School, Olive
Heather Darrow has the esteemed privilege and honor
Principal of welcoming visitors from districts
throughout California, as they seek to
learn about key AVID strategies and how AVID can
support learning and student outcomes. This past
Spring, Olive hosted an AVID District Leadership
showcase, which gave us the opportunity to collaborate
with educators throughout California, inspiring a
deeper understanding of pedagogy and clarity about
best practices for instruction. Students who work with
AVID develop collaboration, organization, and high-
level thinking skills that prepare them for their next
steps in education. At Olive, our students begin their
AVID journey in TK and continue building their skills
through 6th grade. When our students leave Olive, they
are well prepared for the rigor of secondary education.

participated in hands-on learning. They used
dominoes, playing cards, playdoh, dice, and cups to
reinforce number sense. Each family received a care
package to continue their learning at home. Our
upper grade students and families “broke out” using
their knowledge of fractions. Their breakout activity,

feedback and look forward to our next two-family
nights focused on STEM and literacy.

                    Our West Orange Warriors
                 love science and mathematics!
                 During our interactive assembly
                 in April, our Warriors learned
                 about air and our atmosphere
                 through a series of ultra-cool
  Dr. Monica demonstrations showing the
Murray weight of air, the effects of the
    Principal atmosphere, and the properties
                 and actions involved in a
vacuum. Earlier in the month, our warriors
participated in the magic of science live
  demonstrations. Students learned about
  chemistry, magnetism, optical illusions,
physics, and mathematics. We ended the month
of April with Earth Week by continuing to
engage in science and focusing on recycling,
donating used clothes, and creating recyclable
art. Our students demonstrated their creative
talents by making beautiful art with bottles,
boxes, and trash. From robots to purses, our
students were innovative in designing and
creating their art projects. Way to go, Warriors!

Busy Season
It has been a very busy season at Yorba
and we are just getting started as we begin
gearing up for our busiest season before the
end of the school year. May is Mental Health
Awareness month and now is a perfect time to
brag about our great counseling team and the
addition of our Wellness Center known on our
campus as the Toro Center. Students can be
seen coming into a peaceful, quiet, and calm
place of acceptance and inclusion. Our newest
counselor, Ms. Ashley Arzola, is a vital part
of what makes the Toro Center so special and
so well received by our students. She, along
with our veteran counselor, Mr. Adan Garcia
help make our campus a healthy and safe
place for all students. Any Yorba student can
come in to chat, take a break, or to find help
when needed. Additionally, there are puzzles,
games, books, a coloring station, and a “calm
down corner” available for a quiet place to
“reset”. What a great addition to our Yorba
  campus.
