HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL Submitted by Jocelyn Hainsworth Well, all the signs are there: it’s actually light out by the time we are having breakfast, my fellow members of Gardening in Saskatchewan are coming out of dormancy and inquiring if they should be planting their pepper plants yet and my sister asked me when we should start our geranium cuttings. It must be almost ‘first spring’. I even took a few minutes and joined the dog and cat out in the warm sunshine on the deck yesterday – the first time I’ve been out there that it didn’t need shoveled off in three months. Facebook is full of announcements of playoff hockey games ... another sure sign. Auction sale catalogues are starting to show up in the mail and our husky dog is into shedding so much if I saved up for three days I’m pretty sure I could knit a new dog. My desire to hang laundry out on the line is driving me crazy. I would just go ahead and do it except that the line is only a foot or so above the snow banks at the moment. In fact the whole yard feels like a walled city right now with all the snow that’s been pushed up to keep the driveway clear. Our ditches are convex instead of concave. In this land of irony the hose we disconnected from our basement sump pump to bring water from the dwindling dugout last fall will need to be reinstalled to keep our basement from flooding this spring. Not that I’m complaining – so glad Mother Nature decided to give us the moisture, just saying she sure does like to keep us on our toes. There is warmth to the sun when it comes out, some days it even gets hot enough in my greenhouse to melt the snow off its roof, although it will be quite some time before I will be putting any tender babies out there. There will be several ‘false springs’ before that happens, but I know if I could get the door open it would smell like warming soil in there. I had planned to plant a smaller vegetable garden this year. We just don’t need that much and there are more fun things to do than pull weeds and can beans. But now I hesitate. I watch the news and worry about what will come next. We have just come through two years that if nothing else, has taught us how small this world is. How easily we are tipped into toilet paper shortages. Somehow an egotistical maniac with delusions of grandeur and a nuclear arsenal at his disposal makes a global pandemic seem quaint in comparison. What will happen to our supply chains and our cost of living now? Maybe another big garden would be a good idea – if only to keep me too busy to worry too much. The truth is my problems – our problems as Canadians – are miniscule at the moment. I do not have to make the decision to run for my life or fight for my country. I am thinking about how big my garden should be when I plant it in three months, not where will I be in three months. My grandchildren are safe in their homes with both their parents there to protect and provide for them. I live and speak from a position of safety and privilege that the Ukrainian people can only dream of. I am humbled by their courage and resolve, and that of those protesting the war in Russia. The stakes couldn’t be higher. Facebook is full of pictures of sunflowers today. Apparently they are the national flower of Ukraine. Whatever else goes into my garden this summer, I will be planting lots of those. I hope that by the time they are in bloom peace will be restored to Ukraine.

MARCH 2022 HAVEN HAPPENINGS Submitted by Barbara Dennis Time has marched us right into March!! After the cold and snow of January and February we are all hoping for a mild and pleasant March. Why just the other day residents spoke yet again of wanting to sit out in the sun and just enjoy the warmth on their face. Here’s hoping it will be sooner than later. We do hope a warmer day will coincide with a Handi-Van booking so mobile residents can get out for a tour of the snowbanks around about town. In the interim we keep busy with all manner of activities. Bingos and dice games, shuffleboard and bowling, a curling tourney is in progress, and there is always a reason to celebrate. Canadian Agriculture Day Feb 22, 2022 was applauded for the variety of food we are blessed with. You have heard the saying: “If you ate today, thank a farmer.” There will be a St. Patrick’s Day party and of course March monthly birthday party. Recently we tried our luck at horse racing. This is done with plastic horses of various sizes and dice. Here Jim Clark holds his jockey number to claim his ownership of the title of 2 time champion. Jim reminisced of years past when the local fairs held horse races and he was a competitor. He did not claim he was the winner then – but he is now! Another activity that is very popular here at the Haven is Bat Ball. Played with a bat made out of a pool noodle and a balloon for a ball. The object of the game is to keep the balloon moving and residents young and old enjoy it. Our most senior resident at 102 tells me that it is her favorite game: she is not alone in her enjoyment.. We are in need of musical entertainment. We have a piano that is in need of a player.{It has a date with a piano tuner mid-March.} At time of writing restrictions are: all must wear a mask. Our usual entertainers have declined our invitations (no apology needed). It is hard to sing and or play a saxophone wearing a mask. So we are looking for mask wearing piano players or anyone who plays an instrument, who would be willing to come and play a little. You do not need to be professional or even extremely gifted, we will appreciate any effort you are able to give – PLEASE – our piano and our residents needs YOU. Call 452 – 4003 to arrange a time. I will sign off this time wishing everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and the Irish wish : may March’s road rise to meet you and friends be there for you.
