ON THE COVER

In early fall, OLLI’s Leadership Committee surveyed members to better understand their needs with regard to lifelong
learning during this pandemic. The last question of the survey asked, “Is there anything else you would like the
Leadership Committee to know?” The answers from this question were developed into a word cloud. A word cloud
is an image composed of words used in a particular text or subject, in which the size of each word indicates its
frequency or importance. So, the more often a word appears in the text, the bigger and bolder it appears in the word
  cloud.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
As I write this message (mid-November,) we are wrapping up our first semester at community venues
as opposed to Penn State York’s campus. While the setting was different, the OLLI spirit was ever-
present. Although registrations for courses were down more than half of a non-COVID semester, there
                               were positives aspects.
First, while our registrations were down, those who took in-person courses seemed ecstatic to be
learning and connecting with their OLLI friends and instructors. The social aspect of OLLI was never
more evident, despite masks and social distancing. With strict safety protocols, we were not only
able to provide in-person courses, but also a reprieve from the solitude that COVID has caused for so
many. For those who were comfortable, an OLLI course was a great place to be this past fall.
Second, online courses were an adequate replacement for in-person courses for those who did
not feel comfortable participating in-person. Online courses didn’t provide the social aspect I just
mentioned, but still allowed our members to continue as lifelong learners. Technology was definitely an advantage for many.
Last, some members prefer online courses, not only because of COVID, but due to issues with transportation, personal mobility, or
they simply like to learn from their living room in their pajamas!
These insights have prompted the Curriculum Committee to begin accommodating all of your needs. This upcoming semester
we will offer over ninety in-person courses and twenty online courses. Special thanks to the Curriculum Committee who worked
tirelessly to make this pivot and start recruiting instructors for online courses as well as our many in-person courses!
Finally, the past ten months have brought great fluctuations of my emotions. While the saying is overused, these have been
unprecedented times. OLLI was no different from other organizations who had to adjust their norms in order to continue to serve
their mission. Reflecting on our journey since March, I have developed a list of positive things that I have experienced as director
of OLLI as a result of the pandemic.
    1. We are not alone. As 1 of 124 OLLIs in the country, the camaraderie of OLLIs during this time has been remarkable. In addition,
the support of the National Resource Center (NRC) at Northwestern University was invaluable.
    2. We worked even more closely with our sister OLLI at University Park to share resources, ideas, courses, frustrations,
triumphs, and lessons learned. I am optimistic that our relationship will continue to grow to benefit both OLLIs.
    3. There was no script for managing an OLLI during a pandemic. This forced me to listen more intently to the feedback that was
shared by members. I learned to trust my instincts and do what I felt was best. Truthfully, I won some and I lost some.
    4. The pandemic made it crystal clear that OLLI has two staff members but is volunteer driven. The list of what volunteers have
helped with during this pandemic is incredible. Thank you to the curriculum, development, growth and marketing, leadership,
       membership, and social committees!
    5. While having to sit at the registration table for each course was an atypical task for me, I got to know so many OLLI members,
put faces to names, and met all our instructors. For me, this was a great benefit of these odd times.
    6. Last, while being a part of a large university has challenges, we would not have survived the past ten months financially
without the support of Penn State. Thank you to Penn State, and most importantly, our colleagues in Outreach and Professional
and Community Engagement (PACE) for believing in the importance of OLLI and the value that we bring to Penn State.
To those who have said, “I’ll become a member again when the pandemic is over,” we can’t wait to welcome you back. For the “a
pandemic isn’t going to stop me from participating in OLLI” crowd, we look forward to seeing you in March! For the, “I don’t love
Zoom but it is good enough for now” and the “I really like Zoom, can OLLI please add this to your regular schedule,” I hope the
Zoom selections this semester pique your interest. Thank you to all members for being flexible as we navigate the ever-changing
landscape of lifelong learning during a pandemic.
Cordially,
Jennifer Geubtner-May, Ed.D.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS
OLLI COVID-19 Protocols
COVID-19 is more easily transmitted through close or prolonged contact
with an infected person and is more dangerous to those with underlying
medical conditions. To reduce the risk of exposure for our members, OLLI
has established the following protocols. All OLLI staff, instructors, and
members will be expected to enforce these guidelines. The guidelines are
written as they will be shared with OLLI members and partners.
OLLI WILL ENSURE THE FOLLOWING:
• All participants, instructors, and members will provide and be required to wear face coverings for the duration of programming.
• At least 6-feet will be maintained between each person.
• The number of participants per course will be dictated by the locations’ ability to social distance.
• No handouts will be provided in OLLI courses. If an instructor has handouts to share, she/he will electronically forward them
to the OLLI office prior to class and the office will forward to all registrants. You can print the handouts at home if you
  choose to.
• OLLI at Penn State will confirm the cleaning and sanitization practices at each location conform to the CDC recommendations.
• Enhanced cleaning procedures will take place before and after each course.
• An attendance list will be maintained along with self-health check completion and contact information for all in attendance.
• OLLI will follow proper Office of General Counsel recommendations for use of a release statement or acknowledgment as
  communicated by Pam Driftmier.

Members and Instructors will comply with the following:
• If you have been traveling to a location that is known to have high numbers of COVID-19 cases, you will not attend an OLLI
course for fourteen days following your return to your home community.
• You are required to conduct a health self-assessment which consist of two steps.
1) Determine if you have experienced any COVID-19 symptoms (per CDC updated list): cough, shortness of breath or difficulty
breathing or at least two of the following symptoms: fever – subjective fever (feeling feverish or temperature of 100°F or
higher, chills, headache, sore throat, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, new loss of taste or smell.
2) Check your temperature and register a temperature of less than 100°F.
As you arrive, OLLI staff will:
                                              • Ask “Have you passed your health self-assessment?”.
                                              • Only admit individuals who answer “yes” and record that answer on the participant
check-in list. Individuals failing the self-assessment, by either answering “no” or not
completing it, will be denied admittance to the program and the program fee should
                                                be refunded.
                                              • Prior to entering an OLLI classroom wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with
warm water and soap or use hand sanitizer.
                                              • You will provide and be required to wear face coverings for the duration of
                                                programming. Specifically:

remain in an OLLI course if you do not have and wear a mask.
                                              • Outdoor: While masks are to be worn as often as possible, they may be removed
during times of high physical activity, such as biking or hiking, if social distancing
of at least 6 feet can be maintained between participants. If you stop for a break or
                                                discussion, masks may be worn.
                                              • If you test positive for COVID-19 within two weeks of attending a course or event,
you are to report the illness to the OLLI director as soon as possible. OLLI at Penn
State will then follow Penn State’s guidelines for reporting and contact tracing.

ABOUT OLLI
ABOUT OLLI
For adults who never stop experiencing life, there is a place and a community
that celebrates learning in a relaxed and accepting environment. We invite
you to join us in a learning adventure through the Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute at Penn State York (OLLI at Penn State York). OLLI is open to all
adults who love to learn.

Founders of The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Penn State York
Through the efforts of three like-minded women (clockwise from left, the late
Charmaine Kissinger, Olive Padden, and the late Gussie Petron) and several
other volunteers, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) initiated an
association with Penn State York. Courses began in April 2008.

What is OLLI at Penn State York?
OLLI at Penn State York was established to enrich the lives of mature adults living in York County by providing
a variety of educational and social activities. We are one of more than 124 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes
across the nation that is partially supported by an endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation. All OLLI’s
share two principles: (1) that courses should be for the love of learning, no tests, homework, or stress, and (2)
that volunteers are the heart of the organization.

How does OLLI at Penn State York work?
OLLI at Penn State York is a membership organization. Members may participate in any of the OLLI activities,
which include courses, trips, social activities, and Special Interest Groups (SIGs.) OLLI activities usually take
place during the day and are held on the Penn State York campus. Please note, due to COVID-19 and social
distancing guidelines at Penn State York, OLLI courses will be held at Wisehaven Terrace Hall in spring 2021.

What are the fees for OLLI at Penn State York?
Because OLLI at Penn State York is largely volunteer-driven, the fees are kept low. Membership dues are $50
per year and are required for many courses. OLLI members’ course and event fees vary according to the length
in sessions, cost of course materials, and sometimes due to admission tickets. See course descriptions for
fee details. Single-session courses are $8 for members. Nonmembers may take up to three one-session
courses for $15 a course. After three courses as a nonmember, you must become an OLLI member to continue
to take courses in the fall and spring semesters. Bus trip costs range from approximately $65 to $110 and are
open to members and nonmembers.

What does volunteer-driven mean?
OLLI at York has two full-time staff, a director, and an administrative assistant. OLLI members who volunteer,
as well as our volunteer instructors, are the reason OLLI continues to thrive while keeping fees low. OLLI
members can choose from a variety of volunteer opportunities. For example, they may instruct a course,
serve on a committee, as a course coordinator, or in a leadership position. Participation is flexible, allowing
members to contribute as their schedules permit. If you are interested in volunteering with OLLI, see page 15
with volunteer opportunities or call our office, 717-771-4015.
