2019-2020 Courses Package Plan The MDA’s Continuing Education Committee is pleased to offer selected presentations Sign up for courses by for dentists and allied personnel. Package this brochure, or by Plan rates offer considerable savings over going to the MDA’s registration fees for individual programs. Confirmations received after the previous Friday can not be guaranteed lunch. • Please remember that it is your responsibility to make note of verification code(s) in order to prove your attendance at MDA continuing education courses. Codes are not given out at any other time other than when the morning and/or afternoon sessions are completed. Keep verification forms for your records. • Your name badge will be available for you to pick up at the first course you attend. Name badges will not be mailed. If you will be attending courses held as part of the MDA Convention, a separate name badge and any tickets will be available for pickup there. • Attendees will be sent confirmation emails/notices or reminders prior to each course. Please help the MDA put together as accurate a head count as possible, and respond, if needed. • Individual course cancellations will be accepted until two weeks before the program, less a $15 processing fee. Another staff member may be substituted. (6 hours) Disclosures: None Kevin Muench, DMD This course will demonstrate the systems and concepts of the Pankey Mann Schuyler system of occlusal rehabilitation through case presentations. Patient development and engagement is a system and/or process with the end objective being patient health … whole health. Course Objectives: Attendees will learn • A process that will help heighten the clinician’s awareness of the impact of recognizing that “teeth are part of a system” and objective assessment of the system can and should drive the treatment plan • The systems and concepts of the Pankey Mann Schuyler system of occlusal rehabilitation through case presentations • How to utilize a bite splint as a means of engaging the patient in a developmental process to shift a patient’s awareness and learning as they ask for a higher level of care. • How involving the patient in this process will create engagement that can build both confidence in the process for the patient, but, more importantly, in patients’ recognition that their involvement in the process will/can markedly impact their comfort well beyond “I feel better” or “that looks nice” Dr. Kevin Muench started in private practice in 1988. He graduated from Boston College in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and, in 1987, graduated from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey with honors. Dr. Muench completed his general practice residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. In 1993, Dr. Muench received a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, and in 2002, received a masters in the Academy. He is an alumnus of the Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, FL. He has taught residents at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center since 2009. His memberships include the American Equilibration Society and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is an active participant in several study clubs, and is a member to the Pankey Advisory Board. Dr. Muench resides and practices in Maplewood, NJ. 2019-2020 MDA CE page 4

He will also cover diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, including the dentist’s role and appliance selection. If you or someone close to you may have sleep apnea (like your patients), you owe it to yourself and them to take this course and potentially change, or literally save, their lives. Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Looking Beyond The Teeth and Saving Lives Course Objectives: Attendees will • Understand normal sleep and how to improve sleep • Understand how obstructive sleep apnea affects adults and children • Become familiar with the dental aspects of screening for obstructive sleep apnea • Recognize how to choose the best oral appliance for your specific patient • Understand how to avoid problems and minimize side effects of oral appliance therapy Dr. Jamison Spencer is the director of the Center for Sleep Apnea and TMJ in Boise, ID, and the director of Dental Sleep Medicine for Lane and Associates Family Dentistry in Raleigh, NC. He is a past president of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, a Diplomate of the American Board of Craniofacial Pain, a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, a diplomate of the American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine, and has a masters degree in craniofacial pain from Tufts University. He taught head and neck anatomy at Boise State University, and is adjunct faculty at the University of the Pacific and University of North Carolina dental schools. Emerging Disease Trends, Treatment, Vaccinations and Pharmacology for the Dental Staff Course Objectives: Attendees will learn • Emerging trends in subjects including dental stem cell research and applications, guided bone regeneration, implant surgery/implant failure, CBCT cone beam, CAD/CAM lab cases, botox, laser technology, CDC/OSHA sterilization, and record-keeping requirements • Pharmacology that may appear on a patient’s medical history • Overview of other current and emerging disease trends/concerns for dental care providers, treatments, vaccinations, and pharmacology HPV/The Oropharynx Cancer Epidemic Course Objectives: Attendees will learn • About HPV from a historical and current statistical perspective • Why HPV is considered a CDC “public health concern and on the rise,” and what the public knows about HPV and the oral cancer connection • How many strains exist, which are cancer-causing, is it curable, and if dentistry should routinely test for it • The critical role of dental care providers to educate patients and perform a thorough examination for HPV early detection, recognition, and referral of potential HPV cases Gluten Intolerance/Sensitivity and Celiac Disease Course Objectives: Attendees will learn • Differences between gluten allergy, gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, and celiac disease • The causes and implications of the differences and the applications for oral care • Research findings about what and whole grains • How to determine what medical history responses may trigger a thought about a problem with gluten, and what oral cavity findings will be evident Dr. Cathy Turbyne is the founder and president of Turbyne & Associates, an OSHA/risk management and human resource/business management development firm. Her 28 years experience in OSHA and the human resource field includes corporate human resource and environmental management, health care and industrial site audits, program and training design, and implementation and maintenance of compliance/management programs. She is an administrator and examiner for the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners, a former Instructor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and past president and life member of the American Dental Hygienists Association. The Impact of Alternative Medicine on Clinical Dentistry: Complimentary or Conflicting?: The resurgence of herbal medicine has produced confusion and conflict among health care providers and patients alike. Dental professionals must avoid making negative generalizations about alternative therapies, in order to stay involved in the therapeutic decision-making process. During this program, the herbal landscape will be discussed. The Impact of Alternative Medicine on Clinical Dentistry: Complimentary or Conflicting? Course Objectives: Attendees should be able to • Buy and use a science-based herbal reference and recommend information sources for patients • Describe valid medical uses for the top twenty systemic herbal medications • Recognize the dental impact of common systemic herbal medications and dietary supplements • Select specific herbal oral health products with reasonable claims and safe ingredients Update on Oral Health Products: How to Make Informed Choices: Patients ask you questions about home use dental products more frequently than they ask about any other oral health subject. They need professional guidance now more than ever in making the best choices, based on their unique set of circumstances. Professor Baker will compare manufacturer claims and objective clinical data concerning chemotherapeutic products for gingivitis and calculus reduction. The safety and effectiveness of controversial ingredients/practices will be reviewed in this entertaining, yet comprehensive evaluation of homecare dental product information. Update on Oral Health Products: How to Make Informed Choices Course Objectives: Attendees should be able to • Select a dentifrice for a specific patient based on type of fluoride, gingivitis or calculus reduction, abrasiveness, cleaning ability, and safety with chronic use • Choose the most effective chemical treatments for halitosis • Evaluate mouthwashes based on pH, mineralization, alcohol content, and therapeutic effect • Recognize how to choose the best oral appliance for your specific patient • Manage a patient with drug-induced xerostomia and/or idiopathic or iatrogenic mucositis Karen Baker has been on the Dental College faculty at the University of Iowa for 38 years and occupies a unique role in dental practice and education. She is a clinical pharmacist with a master’s degree in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, and is focused on patient-specific dental drug therapy. She has given well over 1,000 invited programs nationally and internationally, and holds memberships in many dental and clinical pharmacology and therapeutics organizations. Her dental education-based pharmacy and drug therapy consultation center is the only one in the United States. She has authored more than 50 articles and abstracts, and lectures extensively in pre-doctoral and graduate courses at the University of Iowa. 2019-2020 MDA CE page 7

These restorations provide patients with minimally invasive restorations that preserve tooth structure, while providing esthetics, longevity, and function - they are personally rewarding and cost-effective. However, dental practitioners face difficulties while bonding and placing these restorations. This presentation will provide tips and techniques for predictable and sensitivity-free bonded restorations in daily practice, and it will provide guidelines for shade selection, cavity preparation, layering style, and how to achieve proximal contacts and contouring and polishing to obtain functional and esthetic restorations. A step-by-step approach will be used to present how to achieve excellence in bonding and obtain excellence in direct restorations, including Class IVs, diastema closure, and direct resin veneers. Course Objectives: Attendees will learn how to • Predictably select shade for anterior resin composite restorations • Perform cavity preparations conducive to blending • Layer anterior composites • Contour and polish anterior resin composites Dr. Marcos Vargas attended Cayetano Heredia University School of Dentistry in Lima, Peru, and graduated in 1985. He spent two years, 1990 to 1992, in the AEGD program at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY. Dr. Vargas received his certificate and masters degree in operative dentistry in 1994 at the University of Iowa, where he is currently a professor in the Department of Family Dentistry. His primary research interests are in the area of dental materials, including glass ionomers, dentin bonding, composite resins, and esthetic dentistry. He has been recognized for his expertise of direct restorative treatment procedures, and conducts numerous lectures and hands-on seminars nationally and internationally. He has published extensively in the areas of dental adhesion and resin composites for almost 30 years. Oral Ulcers, Erosions and Red Lesions: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment Course Objectives: Attendees will • Learn how to differentiate between traumatic, immune-mediated, autoimmune and infectious ulcers • Know how to perform a biopsy and when to use a special transport medium • Learn how to use topical steroids in their practice with ease • Receive an update on new therapies for blistering diseases The Cancer Patient in Your Practice Course Objectives: Attendees will • Learn how to prepare their patient for cancer therapy, including bisphosphonate therapy • Be able to diagnose and manage complications of cancer therapy, including radiation therapy • Be familiar with complications of standard chemotherapy and new targeted therapies Oral White Lesions: Diagnosis and Management in the 21st Century Course Objectives: Attendees will • Be able to discriminate between traumatic white lesions, lichen planus and leukoplakia, the most common precancerous lesion • Learn how to treat lichen planus using topical steroids • Understand what the prognosis of leukoplakia is in terms of cancer development and how to manage patients Dr. Sook-Bin Woo is an associate professor and graduate program director for oral and maxillofacial pathology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. She received her oral pathology training at Indiana University and Harvard University, her head and neck pathology training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and her oral medicine training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is board certified in both oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine, and is in active practice in both specialties. She is co-director of the Center for Oral Pathology at StrataDx Inc. in Lexington, MA. Dr. Woo’s interests and the focuses of her research are mucosal disease, precancerous conditions, especially in relationship to HPV and treatment using immunotherapy, and the oral side effects of biologic agents and targeted therapies. She has published many articles. She is a sought-after speaker locally, nationally and internationally. She received the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2012. 2019-2020 MDA CE page 9

Integrative Approaches to Pain Course Objectives: Attendees will be able to • Discuss the pros and cons of prescription drugs used for pain management • Describe the benefits and risks of using over-the-counter analgesic medications • Describe the evidence and risks of dietary supplements commonly used by patients for pain management • Describe three strategies to enhance the patient experience using non-pharmacologic pain management solutions Life Is Your Best Medicine: Modern science is now confirming what many indigenous peoples long believed, that much of our health and vitality comes from the way we live our lives, and from the choices that we make each and every day. It has also confirmed that our resiliency, our ability to bounce back and move forward, is stronger when we are physically, emotionally and spiritually nourished. Life Is Your Best Medicine Course Objectives: Attendees will be able to • Discuss the effects of chronic stress on work performance and risk for depression, anxiety, heart disease, and other disease • Describe how meditation, physical activity, rest, music, and other lifestyle factors can positively impact physical and emotional health • Identify strategies for reducing fatigue, improving sleep, and increasing emotional well-being • Describe three ways to improve their nutrition Dr. Tieraona Low Dog is a physician, author, and educator. She practiced herbal medicine, midwifery, massage therapy, and martial arts before earning her medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She is one of the foremost experts in the United States on the safe and appropriate use of botanical remedies and dietary supplements. She has overseen the evaluation panel for supplement/botanical safety for United States Pharmacopeia, including joint reviews with the Department of Defense, for the past 20 years. Dr. Low Dog has published 54 research articles in medical/science journals, and written 24 chapters for medical textbooks. She has been honored with many awards from academia, public health, and industry throughout her 40-year career. She has been invited to speak at more than 600 conferences, with her message of healthy nutrition, sensible dietary supplement use, integrative medicine, compassionate care, and deep ecology. She has authored five books, including four with National Geographic - Fortify Your Life, Healthy at Home, Life is Your Best Medicine, and Guide to Medicinal Herbs. Disclosures: Procter & Gamble This course will cover two topics in separate three-hour blocks. 25 Shades of Grey and a Whole Lot Less Risqué: This radiology review course has a number of common cases, in addition to some interesting unusual cases thrown in to keep the audience on their “toes.” The emphasis will be a review of common radiolucent and radiopaque lesions. Get ready to learn, laugh, and make a difference in the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases. 25 Shades of Grey and a Whole Lot Less Risqué Course Objectives: Attendees will be able to • Demonstrate a logical approach to diagnosis and treatment of common radiolucent lesions found on radiographs • Demonstrate a logical approach to diagnosis and treatment of common radiopaque lesions found on radiographs • Recognize the common radiographic lesion found in dental practices Great Cases with New Faces: This new, interactive course will present a potpourri of interesting cases seen by Dr. Svirsky, or emailed to him over the past few years. In this course, participants learn how to describe a lesion, develop a differential diagnosis, and treat the condition. Dr. Svirsky will show how he approaches cases and arrives at a diagnosis. The audience will help Dr. Svirsky to diagnose them, as he plays the patient. Some unusual “things” might pop up! Dr. Svirsky has developed a broad background in research, published numerous articles in dental literature, and earned a master’s degree in adult education. He is a sought-after speaker, with an international reputation as an informative and entertaining lecturer. He is an honorary member of the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society, and has received a presidential citation from the American Dental Association for significant contributions to the health of the public and the profession of dentistry. In 2012, he received the William J. Gies Award from the Greater New York Dental Meeting for contributions to oral health.The Alumni Association of Virginia Commonwealth University chose Dr. Svirsky to receive the 2013 Outstanding Alumnus Award. In 2015, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Dawson Academy for advancement of the dental profession through research, publication, and education, and has been awarded an honorary membership in the American Academy of Oral Medicine.
