He’s a researcher, writer, illustrator, photographer and expedition leader. He is ‘Dottore Magistrale in Scienze Naturali’. He earned a ‘Laurea Magistrale’, equivalent to a Master of Science, M.Sc., from the University of Milan. His Thesis was on the presence of the great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea. He is an Adjunct Professor of Vertebrate Zoology for the post-graduate course in Marine Sciences at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy. He’s a collaborator of Apex Shark Expeditions, (South Africa), of Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions (Australia), of Strømsholmen Sjøsportsenter (Norway), and has hosted over 30 expeditions with them. During these expeditions he gives courses in biology of sharks (in South Africa and Australia) and orcas (in Norway). He's also a Scientific Editor at Apex Images, South Africa. Moreover he’s the curator of the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank, a founding member of the Mediterranean Shark Research Group, a Regional Investigator of the Global Shark Attack File, and an Ambassador of the Undersea Soft Encounter Alliance. He is the author or co-author of 19 books on sharks, 35 research reports in peer-reviewed scientific journals and 76 articles in popular and professional magazines, published in 17 Nations. His photos and illustrations of sharks and other marine animals have appeared in numerous books, scientific journals and popular magazines. He has collaborated with magazines such as Sub, Mondo Sommerso, Il Pesce, EuroFishmarket, Aqva, Quark, Airone, Rivista Marittima, National Geographic Italia, Dive New Zealand, Dive Pacific, The World and I, Annales, Biologie in unserer Zeit, Unterwasser, Tauchen, Duiken, Apnéa, Plongeurs International, Océanorama, Enviromagazin, Mojesabz. He has also given many lectures on shark biology at many universities, museums and diving associations around the world. From 2010 he’s touring Europe with his lecture “The Great White Sharks of South Africa” that so far has had over 70 dates with a total attendance of over 7,000 people. RESEARCH Alessandro De Maddalena has studied extensively the presence of the great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea, a subject on which he’s the foremost expert. In over 15 years of work, he has gathered approx. 600 records of great white sharks from the entire Mediterranean Sea, creating the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank, representing the most complete and comprehensive research program ever performed on the species in that area. This research has lead him to study distribution, habitat, movements, size, reproduction, behavior, diet, attacks on humans, and fishery of the great
white shark. The same research has lead him to undertake a complete study of white shark items preserved in natural history museums of Europe. Alessandro De Maddalena has also studied the biology of all shark species inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea, the fisheries and trade of sharks in Italy, the colouration of shark pectoral fins, the great white shark items preserved in museums of USA, the classification of sharks preserved in the Natural History Museum of Prague, the interactions between sharks and divers in the Red Sea, the interactions between orcas and sharks; he has reported the first record of the Java shark from the Mediterranean, he has ascertained the maximum size of the shortfin mako and the great white shark, and he has contributed to the study of the basking shark’s growth. The great white shark attack data he has gathered have been included in the Global Shark Attack File, of which De Maddalena is a Regional Investigator for the Mediterranean. Results of his research are regularly published in his books and research reports in peer-reviewed scientific journals (see the Publications section). SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION Considered one of the world’s best nature illustrators, Alessandro De Maddalena has produced over 1,000 illustrations of marine animals. His illustrations have appeared in over 100 publications, including books, scientific journals, popular and professional magazines. He has had illustrations on exhibit at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, the World Underwater Picture Festival in Antibes – Juan-Les-Pins, France, Nausicaä Aquarium in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, the Aquarium of Milan, Italy, the Museum of Marine Biology in Porto Cesareo, Italy, and the Whale Shark Museum in Talisayan, Philippines. MARINE LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY Alessandro De Maddalena is a professional wildlife photographer and has produced innumerable high quality photos of marine animals, even thanks to his long-term collaboration with Chris Fallows, one of the world’s leading wildlife photographers. His images have appeared in many publications, including books, popular and professional magazines. He has had photos on exhibit at the Aquarium of Paris, France, and the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, USA. A great exhibition of his photos portraying great white sharks of South Africa took place from July to September 2014 at the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science & Art, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. Alessandro De Maddalena’s books Great white Sharks of South Africa, Biologia dello Squalo Bianco and La Baia degli Squali Volanti are fully illustrated with his photos (see the Books section).
