SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Superintendent’s Message The Ocean County Vocational Technical School (OCVTS) 2021-2022 Course Guide provides a comprehensive overview of the many career and academic programs offered by the Ocean County Vocational Technical School. OCVTS is committed to our mission of preparing students for today’s demanding high-tech job market. Many of our programs offer opportunities for our students to earn college credits through articulation agreements with area colleges to provide a seamless transition for students who choose to further their education. In our ongoing efforts to keep pace with the technological advances and job-related skills, OCVTS has made great strides in developing and launching programs that will keep our district on the forefront of career training. Our ongoing partnerships with business and industry leaders provide valuable insight into trends and the skill-sets essential to developing career-ready curriculum. We plan and develop workshops and lab areas equipped with technology to not only teach current business practices but also prepare our students to meet the demands of the future. FAQ’S Frequently Asked Questions What are the advantages of a career elective at Ocean County Vocational Technical School? - Receive between 10 and 15 elective credits from the home high school per year - Earn college credits to jump start a college education through articulation agreements - Receive a certificate of completion from OCVTS, in addition to various national certifications - Receive assistance with job placement in related fields of employment - Receive scholarship assistance for ‘After High School’ vocational programs Who should attend Ocean County Vocational Technical School? The Ocean County Vocational Technical School offers career majors in over 30 areas for students going on to college or directly to the world of work. OCVTS works hand-in-hand with sending schools to provide a complete education for high school students. Students may attend during their junior and senior year, as well as post graduate. The students attend “home school” for half a day and are transported to the vocational center for the other half. Ties are maintained with the home school, where they pursue academic classes, take part in sports or other extracurricular activities, and graduate. School counseling services are jointly provided by the vocational school and the home district. Students receive a certificate from OCVTS, as well as a high school diploma from their home school. Are there prerequisites to apply to Ocean County Vocational Technical School? In order to be enrolled at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School, a student must receive a recommendation from his/her counselor. The student should have successfully completed the tenth grade to enter any of the two year courses. Some programs will require an entrance exam and acceptance will be based on the results of that exam. All applicants interested in Child Care Professions, Employment Orientation Service Occupations, Culinary Arts programs or medical-related programs will be responsible for getting a Mantoux test for tuberculosis prior to the start of the school year. Grades and high school attendance may be reviewed prior to acceptance. Once enrolled at OCVTS, attendance is strictly monitored and directly affects a student’s grade. Poor attendance can impact enrollment status. Additional application forms are available from the home school guidance counselor, the OCVTS Student Services and Admissions Department, school counselors at each OCVTS center and at www.ocvts.org. Earn College Credits ( Articulation Agreements ) 10 OCVTS programs provide opportunities to earn college credit through advanced coursework. Ocean County Vocational Technical School has established articulation agreements with over 20 colleges, universities and technical institutes, which allow students to earn college credits for the work they complete in their training program. The Ocean County Vocational Technical School has embraced many articulation offerings, expanding to include both full and part-time programs. This gives the student a jump start on a college education and prevents the duplication of course work at the college level. Career Academies What Is a Career Academy? A career academy is an integrated approach to learning, which lets students develop a career plan and educational pathway, which focuses on a specific career major. Students receive a rigorous four-year college preparatory academic program, which surpasses New Jersey high school graduation requirements and prepares students for admission to competitive colleges and universities. The curriculum is driven by New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards. Students are selected from applications through a competitive process and enter at the ninth grade level. Applicants must reside in Ocean County to be eligible for admission. All school districts in Ocean County are eligible to participate in sending applications to the programs.
