“Children learn as they play. More importantly, in play, children learn how to learn” O. Fred Donaldson At Foundation Early Learning Centre our program focuses on an educational play- based experiences that support each child’s individual learning needs and interests. Skills developed in early learning allow children to transition more easily through kinder, school and beyond. Young children learn about the world through play. Playful experiences prepare children for “deeper learning,” especially in essential skills like executive functioning. Pre-kinder programs expose children to many different types of play that they may not have access to at home. It gives children the opportunity to use their imagination and practise important skills. It also helps their social and emotional development, and wellbeing. It can be a big adjustment for a young child to navigate the workings of a classroom for the first time in kindergarten. Our pre-kinder program provides children with those opportunities to make the transition in a positive and supportive learning environment. Our program links in with the Early Years Learning Framework which guides our educators to create flexible, stimulating, challenging and inclusive learning experiences. Through regular attendance at our early learning centre, children develop skills of independence, self-confidence, relationship building and problem solving. Our Educators have a wealth of knowledge and have been a part of the industry for many years, and have created a nurturing, supportive environment that makes all our families and children feel a sense of belonging. We value the knowledge our families bring to our Early Learning Centre as the information they provide us with helps to plan and implement learning experiences for the children. With a bright and welcoming learning space and a large, well-equipped yard, Foundation Early Learning Centre is the best place to give them the best start to their education. Take the next step Brayden’s Story Brayden started his journey at FLC in 2005 as a preschooler in our children’s programs, but it was his return to FLC in 2017 as part of our Certificate in General Education for Adults (CGEA) program, completing his year 9 and year 10 in the same year, that was the beginning of an extraordinary journey… “When I was first told about FLC from my Mum, I was going through a tough time in my life. I had very high anxiety, and I couldn’t function well, if at all, in a normal high school environment. I was skipping school most days and the times that I worked up enough courage to go to school, I couldn’t even get out of the car and walk in. So, when my Mum heard about FLC she thought it would be a good place for me. My first day I somehow worked up the courage to go inside and sit in class. After a while, I had an anxiety attack and I wanted to go home. Rather than sending me home, the Educators encouraged me to speak to the Wellbeing team, and after a bit of talking, I was able to calm myself down. After that, I started to get more and more used to being in the FLC environment. By getting out of the car and going to FLC, day by day I got better with my anxiety and after just a few months being their my anxiety had gone right down and I started to feel like a normal person again. I’m just going to say that FLC is seriously the best place to go if you are struggling. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made…” After deciding to leave FLC in 2018 during his VCAL Intermediate year, Brayden decided to explore his interest in computers further and enrolled in a TAFE course. Although he enjoyed the subject, the course was challenging and when COVID moved courses online, the lack of face-to-face learning impacted Brayden’s learning and enjoyment. It simply wasn’t right for him. When Brayden found out about our Take The Next Step program, he knew that this was exactly what he needed to help him build the skills and confidence he needed, and he knew that the FLC learning environment was supportive and flexible. Brayden started with our Take The Next Step program in January, and right from the beginning his confidence and enthusiasm skyrocketed. Now nearing the end of the program, Brayden has built his interview skills, sharpened his resume and learnt valuable administration and business skills and more. He has the drive and skills to set himself goals for the future. According to Brayden’s mum Chrissy, since starting Take The Next “He’s got his spark back!” Step…
