How can cosmetic and personal care products be designed so material loops are closed? How can the beauty industry move to zero-waste systems? What new technologies are helping make the transition? With a need to move away from plastics, what are the packaging solutions? How can waste nutrients be upcycled? How can consumers be encouraged to help close material loops? To begin, an update is given on the Cradle-To-Cradle design approach; learn how this innovative approach to product design enables nutrients to enter continuous cycles. Program: Monday 16th May 2022 (EDT) Workshop: Sustainable Packaging Materials (2:00– 5:00pm) TBC, MATERIAL CONNEXION Packaging is a pressing sustainability issue for cosmetic & personal care products. There is growing consumer opposition to single- use plastic packaging, however brands struggle to move away from this ubiquitous material. This workshop gives details of the various alternatives that cosmetic & personal care companies can consider to replace single-use plastic packaging. Guidance and practical advice will be given on how operators can reduce their packaging impacts. The major issues associated with packaging materials will be discussed, as well as recycling rates and disposal issues. Details will be given on the life-cycle of product packaging, highlighting the differences between packaging materials. Using examples, the use of eco- design approach to lower impacts will be discussed. Detailed information will be given on the growing number of green materials that can be used in place of plastic packaging.
