Friday 1st March W/C: Monday 4th March Cornwallis Academy e-bulletin Friday 1st March - Week Commencing: Monday 4th March Message from the Headteacher, Mrs Linney-Drouet I hope you had a restful half-term break, and that you got the space and time to reconnect with family and friends. Our students, your children, worked really hard last half-term. They played hard, worked hard and represented the very best of Cornwallis Academy. If there were some wobbles, inappropriate behaviour or lack of commitment to their academic study, half-term was the time to reflect to come back to school full of energy and focus. I thoroughly enjoyed the Year 11 Dance performance yesterday evening and congratulations to all our Year 11 Dance students. The standards of their dancing, their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to ensuring they get the best outcome is remarkable. I am looking forward to watching our Year 11 Drama students perform equally well this evening. Please remember if you would like to see me, email ilinneydrouet@cornwallisacademy.com. Appointments are at my discretion. If I feel that another member of staff can deal with the issue I will pass it on. However, if I feel the concerns can be dealt with by email, my PA will inform you directly. Friday 1st March W/C: Monday 4th March Year 11 students have this week been issued with their reports and have taken these home. The reports contain their ATL (Attitude to Learning) scores 1-4 and their Working at Grades (the Level they are working at presently). If parents / students have any questions regarding this, please contact the Year team. Formalised timetables for the summer examinations will be issued in late March to all students. Mr Spurling – Head of Year 11 – jspurling@cornwallisacademy.com Miss Perry – Year 11 ICM – sperry@cornwallisacademy.com KS5 Pastoral Update Mr Sutton: Director of Sixth Form This week our Year 12 students took part in an interactive workshop on road safety. The Young Driver & Passenger Safety theatre presentation gave an insight into the potential risks that young drivers can be exposed to and how to ensure they stay safe on the roads. Students commented that although the performance was at times light hearted the message still came across. One year 12 said “I was really shocked by some of the statistics they told us about, but I thought the workshop was really beneficial. It will definitely make me think about my driving when I start lessons later this year." Another commented that “the section at the end where two students had to answer random questions whilst counting blue circles on the screen was a really effective way to show how hard it is to concentrate on multiple tasks even if they seemed really simple”. As mentioned in our last bulletin before the half term break, public exams for our Year 13s and some of our Year 12 students are now only weeks away. If your son or daughter is completing their studies with us this year but has not yet secured an onward route, we are able to offer a bespoke 1 – 1 careers interview with our Careers and Guidance Advisor Tracy McIntyre. If you would like your son / daughter to see Ms McIntyre, you can email her directly to request an appointment using the following email – tmcintyre@cornwallisacademy.com. You are also welcome to attend if you feel this would be beneficial. Can I also take this opportunity to remind parents and students that attendance to both morning registration and study periods (except those that fall after lunch) is compulsory. If you are unsure when your son / daughter has study periods and would like a copy of their timetable emailed to you please get in touch with either myself or Mrs Woollett using the email addresses below. Finally, for this week if you have any concerns or questions about your child or would like to arrange a meeting with either myself or Mrs Woollett please get in touch via email, using the addresses below and one of us will respond to you at our earliest convenience. Friday 1st March W/C: Monday 4th March Football Reports Year 10 Football v Aylesford Sports College- Thursday 7th February 2019 Cornwallis travelled to the improved Aylesford Sports College who had recruited well during the transfer window. One of the new imports was a striker from Holmesdale who had a big game and gave our back 3 trouble throughout the match. It was obvious he was worth the big transfer fee. Cornwallis started well and it was a frantic pace for the first 20 minutes. Cornwallis had most of the possession but were missing their experienced right wing through a broken nail injury. There were plenty of opportunities to score, and in one sequence there 4 missed opportunities at close range. Credit had to be given to the Aylesford defence and their goalkeeper for keeping out so many chances. It was fairly typical that a goal would be scored against the run of play, and that is what happened. Aylesford got the ball down the pitch quickly before our defence could set and a well-executed left foot by their left winger finished off the play. In the 2nd half Cornwallis picked up the pace again led by captain Ethan Smith who directed play from the middle, with vice-captain Bailey Scales assisting on the right wing. Cornwallis managed to get into the lead with 2 quick goals from Miles Davis, with a brain explosion between centre back Harrison Julier and fill in goalkeeper Harry Giles leading to the 2nd goal. The confidence and momentum swung once again in favour of Aylesford and it was only a matter of time before the big signing striker finished the game with a goal to put Aylesford on top of the table with a 3-2 win. Team List: Harry Giles Dylan Holness Ethan Smith Jed Johnson Bailey Scales Ethan Gubbins Harry Salih Alfie Matthews Jason Graham Harry Julier Miles Davis Charlie Whitehead 1st XI – Cornwallis Academy vs Trinity School (Sevenoaks) The first XI team were playing a side who in the season had finished 9th and were therefore expecting a win. The team were given the opportunity to play on a fantastic surface, playing at Sevenoaks FC. The boys started very brightly, passing the ball around with confidence. It only took 5 minutes until Cornwallis got their first deserved goal, with Callum Arter finishing from close range. The first half continued in the same manner, with Cornwallis dominating possession and the back line having a comfortable day. Goals came at a frequent rate, with further finishes from Harry Peach, George Rofe and another from Callum Arter. Half time: Cornwallis Academy 5 – 0 Trinity School (Sevenoaks) Trinity School could not cope with the heavy pressure being applied to them, with Cornwallis starting the second half where they left off. The impressive Jamie Clegett ran the back line well and was even given the opportunity to venture forward for a deserved goal. A Ben Topham penalty, Ryan Keating header and a fantastic strike from 25 yards by Haroun Ahaouari made the score line 8-0 with still 10 minutes to play. Minutes before the full time whistle, Jamie Clegett topped off his man of the match performance with a close range finish to make the score 9-0. A fantastic performance from the boys. Cornwallis started off the stronger team and managed to get the ball into the shooting circle well. Cornwallis went 3-0 up during the first quarter with some excellent shooting from Lacey Swaden. Freya Gubbins and Olivia Orrell played well together, linking some good passes from the centre court and into the shooting circle. New Line Learning did come back stronger in the 2nd and 3rd quarter and managed to score 2 goals, despite some good defending from Olivia Halton and Gracie Sevenoaks. Cornwallis were the stronger team overall and managed to score a few more goals to achieve a win at full time. Final score was Cornwallis 6 – New Line Learning 2. At Cornwallis Academy our Year 11 students at this time will commence a personalised timetable providing them with access to subject specialist teachers for exams they are still to sit and therefore attendance is still compulsory for the entire school day. Please note that JCQ have stipulated that Wednesday 26th June is a Contingency Day. This means that should there be national disruption to a day of exams in the summer, the awarding bodies will liaise with the qualification regulators and the DfE to agree the most appropriate option for managing the impact. As a last resort the affected examinations will be rescheduled. Although every effort would be taken to keep the impact to a minimum, it is possible that there could be more than one timetable date affected following the disruption, up to and including the contingency day on 26th June. Schools will be alerted if it was agreed to reschedule the examinations and the affected students will be expected to make themselves available in such circumstances. Where students choose not to be available for the rescheduled examination(s) for reasons other than those traditionally covered by Special Considerations, they will not be eligible for enhanced grading arrangements. JCQ have also stated that a Contingency Day will be added to all future exam timetables. Individual exam timetables and information will be given to students and sent to parents/guardians during the week beginning 25th March. Result days are as follows: A level – Thursday 15th August, collection between 9.30am and 11.30am GCSE – Thursday 22nd August, collection between 10.00am and 11.30am Click here to see what is in this edition Page 15 of 26

If a student or parent/guardian has any queries or questions regarding exams, please email Mrs Franks, the Exams Officer, on afranks@cornwallisacademy.com. Geography Bulletin There has been a positive start to the new term in the Geography department. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have begun their new units this week. Hopefully students have been enjoying learning about Weather and Climate, Asia and Tectonics. Year 11 students are still working on revision for paper 1. Students are reminded to complete their booklets as per their teachers’ instructions. Mrs Mannouch has begun putting together a ‘Where have we been?’ display. Students are encouraged to bring postcards/information cards of places they have been both inside and outside the U.K. Let’s see how many places we can get. The following students have been nominated by their teachers for their hard work in lesson and/or for homework. Well done and keep it up. Year 7 – Sarah Louise Powell & Lois Drummond Year 8 – Mia Hindle & Finn Brooker Year 9 – Aimee Brayshaw & Jason Jones Year 10 – Grace Crittenden & Bradley Carter Year 11 – Amelia Brown & Owen Pink Art Lino Prints In Art this term Year 10 have been studying Lino Printing. The textural marks on the lino print are achieved by cutting out sections with a sharp tool. The ink only prints where the surface remains. Each colour is printed separately. Perspective: We based our prints on drawings of our school. To make our drawings look real and solid we used single point perspective to accurately draw the interior of Cornwallis Academy. Colour: To make our compositions look exciting we experimented with positive and negative, complimentary and contrasting colours. We also simplified our paintings to use blocks or no more than 3 colours. Click here to see what is in this edition Page 16 of 26

Friday 1st March W/C: Monday 4th March World Book Day On March 7th 2019 it is World Book Day and a chance to celebrate the wonder of stories! Frequently, as English teachers, we are asked to offer recommendations for Cornwallis readers, both reluctant and avid. The following offers a range of books that are fantastic reads especially targeted towards teenagers: https://www.worldbookday.com/wp-content/themes/wbd-2015/pdf/share-a-story-top25-books--young-adults.pdf Need more recommendations? Visit the World Book Day website to find more inspiration tailored towards specific interests and genres. 'A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies' George R.R. Martin. Ex-student returns to the Art Department Our Year 13 artists had the pleasure of a visit and talk from former Cornwallis Art student Tansy Tester. Tansy spoke with the students about the work she created on her foundation course and degree as well as her ongoing progress as a working sculptor. Her work investigates man- made structures and translates them into resin, rubber and coloured cast materials. The translation of materials and colours almost makes the solid objects seem almost edible. Students had the opportunity after the talk to speak with Tansy about their own practical investigations and creative ideas over the course of the day and we hope that Tansy will visit us again soon. Students at Cornwallis will be familiar with a sculptural figure stood above student reception constructed from books. Tansy created this in her final year at the school and it was installed before she departed to embark on her further studies. This means that they have to consider the client’s needs and not just their own. This is an example of those first ideas being adapted to expand ideas. The class had twenty minutes to draw one idea and then expand it into 4 developments, improving the idea as they progressed. 100% Attendance for Term 3 Ella Abbott Rhys Beaney Ryan Byrne Danny Crittenden Joshua Abdey Dylan Bell Sofia Byrne Johnny Crittenden Chloe Adams Abigail Bentley Joe Callegari Harry Crothall Dyami Adani James Berry Adam Carter Ellie Curd Hivda Akdogan Georgie Bird Bradley Carter Sammy Curteis Malachi Akinsanya Ryan Bird Rebecca Carter Nicole Davies Dean Aktouche Aaron Bissenden Star Cauley Connor Davis Abigail Aldrich Anna Blackman Lily Chapman Miles Davis Phoebe Aldrich Mia Blake Finley Chatfield Lilyella Debnam Kya Allan William Blake Jack Chiddention Doclay Domingos Rhys Allan Freya Boorman Luca Ciovica Ryan Donnison Kieran Ames Chloe Bourne Klaudas Ciplys Tilly Doorey Daisy Amos Morgan Bowen Georgia Cole Ellie Dracup Ashley Andrews Oliver Bowen Jack Cole Richard East Sunny Ardley Maddy Brace Megan Colechin Hannah Edmonds Jake Arnold Maxwell Brace Brooke Collett Archie Edwards William Arnold Bailey Bremerkamp Grace Collett Charlotte Eist Sam Ashby Naomi Brenton Liberty Collett Katie Ells Liam Ashdown Cameron Bridger Jack Collier Abbie Elston Owen Ashworth Joshua Broderick Nat Coltham Luke Elston Charlotte Austin Leon Brown Samuel Cook Rhianne Fagg Georgina Austin Ella Budden Cameron Cook-Clarke Joshua Farhall Teo Avilov Lauren Burgess Lily Cooke George Feakes Lenny Baker Jamie Burgoyne Amber Cooper Beth Ferriday Dylan Barnes Maia Burnell Rhys Cooper Samuel Fiander Naz Barnett Thomas Butcher Kaneil Cornwall Charlotte Finch Neelo Barnett Charlie Butler Jade Cottenden Connor Fisher Callum Barry Jake Butler Casey Cox Vito Flaherty Joe Beale Krystal Butler Harvey Cox Jodie Flight Elizabeth Beaney Sophie Butler Skie Cripps Bradley Flynn Click here to see what is in this edition Page 19 of 26

Friday 1st March W/C: Monday 4th March Student Leadership Last term saw the first official meeting of the house student leadership committee. Over 40 students attended to discuss how student voice, leadership and community participation should look at Cornwallis. Students from Year 7 through to Year 13 designed the structure, job roles and application process for house representatives. At Cornwallis we believe student voice is instrumental in shaping the school and allows students to engage in meaningful dialogue with teachers and peers about important issues and how we should move forward with student leadership. Not only does student voice aid in improving the climate of the school but also student achievement, sense of community and fosters workforce readiness. The students were proactive, mature and demonstrated the ability to think creatively to provide solutions to questions posed. Many students such as Euan Carcary, Cara Chiarvesio and Sofia Byrne shone as natural leaders and positive role models for the younger students within the group. Sofia commented "It gave us the chance to share our thoughts with other year groups, and discuss the kinds of opportunities we would like available to students throughout their education here". This term will see the implementation of the structure created by the committee and the chance for students to formally apply for these roles. The structure Each of the 6 houses will have a prefect team, each member of the team will also sit on the student council, not only working vertically within the house system but also working closely with the year teams as year prefect. Year 11 and sixth form students will fulfil the head and deputy prefect roles. Each house will follow the same leadership structure as below.
