Cornershot Annual FromTable of ContentsDesk the President’s Reflections on the Past Year Here it is… the Annual Edition of your Field Hockey BC “Cornershot” newsletter! I welcome you to browse through the following pages that highlight the many memorable moments of this past year for our sport across British Columbia. Alan Waterman What you will immediately notice is that FHBC is not just about elite President, juniors - far from it – as you’ll see these posts throw a spotlight on Field Hockey BC the achievements of ALL our players, coaches and officials, as well as the many facets of the game that FHBC supports for all levels, from our newest U8 players to our renowned masters! And your organization is also incredibly well run. Don’t just take my word for it. The BC Government continues to cite Field Hockey BC as one of the best run Provincial Sports Organizations, with programs and support to members across five main strategic pillars – athletes, coaches, officials, events, and volunteers. Programs and services include school academies, non-member event access for those in developing regions of BC, educational support for coaching, officiating, and sports management, plus the “try it” program that offers attendance at introductory sessions or camps without the requirement of membership. Name almost any aspect of field hockey in this province and FHBC is part of it. We should all be proud of the fact that BC is the largest regional field hockey association in North America, and consequently our players continue to do extremely well on the national and international stage. This past summer we sent 192 players to various National Championships and an astonishing 83 BC players represented Canada on Women’s, Men’s, or Developmental Squads. Our coaches are also well-supported, not only within the national NCCP program, but also with the commitment to go beyond the national program and build additional online education opportunities for community coaches. Equally, our umpires are able to take advantage of the FHBC created Online Community Umpire Course, a system that allows anyone from anywhere in the province to begin their umpiring career on the FHC ladder. This course has become the model for many other provinces throughout the country. Over the past year FHBC has begun the development of more inclusive versions of our sport, such as Walking Hockey, for those with restricted mobility (or simply looking for a good social hockey match). The hope is to incorporate a Walking Hockey section into many FHBC sanctioned events. (continued next page) Cornershot Annual Vol. 12, Number 1 December, 2019 page 1

Cornershot Annual Staff Update - Welcome to Lucas Castro and John Sacre! Lucas is the new Membership and Communications Coordinator, replacing Donna Cumming who has taken over the Athlete Program Manager role from Melody Haddow. Lucas played futsal and soccer growing up in Brazil, wanting to become a Sports Journalist. While getting his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, he started working as a web-reporter for ESPN Brazil, covering the 2014 FIFA World Cup, 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. These experiences awakened in him the desire to be more than a sports Journalist. Wanting to be involved in sport development, he moved to Canada to seek his Masters degree in Administration and to get involved in a sport organization. As well as joining Field Hockey BC, Lucas also volunteers with KidSport BC. He is really happy to be a part of those communities, developing and growing alongside them. John is the new Head Provincial Coach and Performance Manager, replacing Julie King. He began his coaching experience with the Falcons Field Hockey Club while still a junior himself. After retiring from playing on the Canadian Men’s National Team after 12 years, John immediately transitioned to coaching. Over the years, John has coached a variety of teams including 3 generations of players preparing them to transition into the Senior Team as the U21 National Team Coach as well as multiple BC Senior and Junior Men’s and Women’s Teams. He also expanded into such roles as National Team Assistant Coach, and Interim Men’s National Coach. He has been involved in international events such as 4 Pam Am Games, 2 World Cups Qualifiers, Commonwealth Games, 1 World Cup and 3 Jr World Cup Qualifiers. In His Own Words: “Over the many years of working with many athletes and coaches it is a real pleasure in watching them develop both on and off the pitch moving forward on to their various playing and coaching careers.” Cornershot Annual Vol. 12, Number 1 December, 2019 page 3
Cornershot Annual In Memoriam May Brown Field Hockey BC is saddened by the passing of one of field hockey's greatest trailblazers in BC, May Brown. May passed away at age 99 on March 7, 2019. As the first hired coach of the UBC women's field hockey team, May created a culture of accountability and loyalty that has survived generations. May began her political career on the Parks Board, motivated by the poor conditions of playing fields in Vancouver. She went on to serve as a city councillor for 10 years. May has been honoured with countless awards over the years, and was appointed to both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. In 2012, she became the first woman to receive the BC Sports Hall of Fame W.A.C Bennett Award for her contributions to women's field hockey. May will be deeply missed by her friends, family and community. We thank May for her immense contributions to the sport of field hockey and women's sport as a whole. Anna Marchand Field hockey lost a good friend, Anna Marchand on July 9th. Anna was an Ontario, BC and Canadian national player in the 60's and 70's. She was also a Rambler / Tiger club member for "eons". She was an amazing player, a joy for all who played with her: tenacious, skilled in brain and performance and the perfect teammate. "Forever" a BCWFHF executive / council member for over 20 years, a valued contributor in all aspects. She will be missed. (by Jenny John) Henry Lenaghan - Henry passed away earlier this year. Please see “Island News” on p. 28 for more details. His full obituary can be found at https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/timescolonist/ obituary.aspx?n=henry-john-lenaghan&pid=192027389 Cornershot Annual Vol. 12, Number 1 December, 2019 page 4
Cornershot Annual In Memoriam (continued) Peter James The Field Hockey BC community was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Peter James, a true character in the field hockey community. Peter James died on December 24, 2108, at age 64. Peter was affectionately and better known as “Leo” to his teammates and friends. Leo grew up in the University Hill (UBC) area and was a product of the storied junior program originated by Dr. Harry Warren. Leo was a forward and mid-fielder who played his club hockey with the Vancouver Hawks and UBC Thunderbirds. He went on to represent B.C. and Canada in the early and mid -1970’s. Peter’s lengthy and seemingly effortless gazelle-like strides took many an unsuspecting defender by surprise and earned him the appellation “Leaping Leo”. Peter’s dry wit, ready smile and endless selflessness endeared him to his teammates. Despite Leo’s penchant for much coffee and cigarettes (often shortly before game time), he typically scored towards the top on national squad fitness tests. Leo, a UBC commerce grad, was a prolific reader of books and newspapers. Quite fittingly, he worked for many years with Vancouver’s iconic Duthie Books. Peter was truly an “original”. He was taken too young and will be missed by all. The Field Hockey BC community offers its condolences to Peter’s family. Denise has been a leading advocate for field hockey across Canada for over twenty years. Denise has served as an Executive Member with the Vancouver Island Ladies Field Hockey Association, with the Victoria Junior Field Hockey Association, and was instrumental in the vision to create the umbrella Society Field Hockey Victoria. Not only did Denise drive the vision for Field Hockey Victoria, she also agreed to serve as President and continues to this day as an executive member. But Denise’s impact is not only highlighted in areas of governance and leadership but also in her passion for field hockey officiating. Udham has made a tremendous impact on sport and cultural activities for adults and children alike. With his dedication he has enriched the lives of many generations, especially youth, by serving as a role model, and mentor within all aspects of club field hockey. Field Hockey BC Volunteer Recognition and Annual Awards Dinner 2018 (continued) Umpire of the Year - Harpreet Singh Jhamat The Umpire of the Year Award was presented to Harpreet Singh Jhamat for 2018. Harpreet has seemingly been ever present at Field Hockey BC, Community Club and League, and Field Hockey Canada events throughout the year. Whether it is a junior or senior event, Harpreet’s name is often the first to appear on an officiating roster. Always professional and always conscious of the need to assist developing umpires, Harpreet is an invaluable asset to field hockey in BC and beyond. Over the last twelve months Harpreet has officiated at the Field Hockey BC high performance events, the club championships, the VIT, BC Club Invitational events, the Junior National Championships and, of course, is active within the male and female junior and senior leagues in BC. Introduction - A volunteer is defined as “a person who freely offers to undertake a task”. Our field hockey community has a great many volunteers. We again recognise those who have played a role in assisting our sport at a provincial, regional, and local level. Field Hockey BC hopes that the following voluntary recognition awards go some way to expressing our gratitude for the difference you make to our sport. In the category of Governance Support, Field Hockey BC would like to recognise: 2018 saw Sue Demuynck step down as Field Hockey BC President after the maximum allowable three terms and six years in office. Many of us would be correct in thinking that following six years of voluntary service as President to a Provincial Sports Organization, one could enter voluntary retirement with a sense of great satisfaction. And whilst such satisfaction is truly deserved, Sue’s last voluntary governance role as President of Field Hockey BC reflects only a mere fraction of a far more significant contribution to field hockey in BC. Since joining the BC Women’s Field Hockey Federation Executive in 1974, Sue has been ever present holding a multitude of roles right up until the BC Women’s Field Hockey Federation amalgamated with the BC Men’s Field Hockey Association to become Field Hockey BC in 2005. And upon amalgamation, what did Sue do…she immediately volunteered to lead the strategic direction of the Women’s High-Performance athlete portfolio, then proceeded to add the Men’s High-Performance Portfolio to her responsibilities, before taking on the role of Vice-President and then President to the Field Hockey BC Board of Directors. Sue is still passionate about continuing her role as a technical official and within this in the mentorship of new and existing volunteers active in the support of event and competitive hosting. Cornershot Annual Vol. 12, Number 1 December, 2019 page 10
Field Hockey BC Volunteer Recognition and Annual Awards Dinner 2018 (continued) In the category of Governance Support, Field Hockey BC would like to recognise: Eric Broom Field Hockey BC was extremely fortunate in 2008 to have Eric Broom volunteer to take on the role of Coaching Director to the Field Hockey BC Board of Directors, a role he continued in for close to a decade. A legend in the Canadian Coach Education system, Eric continued to bring his vast knowledge and experience to the fore in driving the quality of coach educational and in helping coaches to shape the athlete program environment we see today. A master learning facilitator for all things NCCP, Eric continues to deliver formal coach education to all levels of our sport and we are delighted that Eric has recently agreed to be a principal resource in the delivery of coaching ethics, safety, and long-term athlete development as Field Hockey BC prepares to launch a new community coach education pathway in 2019. “It has been an absolute pleasure to have served with Eric on the Field Hockey BC Board of Directors and it is my pleasure to recognize Eric’s significant voluntary contribution to our sport with the presentation of a 2018 voluntary contribution award”. Paul Chohan Paul Chohan has been a long-serving executive member at both a club and provincial level with Field Hockey BC and continues to serve as a valuable resource when considering the development of field hockey at all levels. Paul first volunteered to serve on the Field Hockey BC Board of Directors in 2008 in the capacity of Umpiring Director and served two terms before volunteering to take on the Business Development Portfolio. During his time as a Field Hockey BC Board Member, Paul was instrumental in the development and execution of the Field Hockey BC umpire mentorship program and assisted in the development and launch of the Field Hockey BC Foundation, a charitable arm of Field Hockey BC’s service delivery which each year awards grants and bursaries to assist athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers to further their opportunities within field hockey. “For his dedication to Field Hockey BC and his continuing role at the community club level, it is my pleasure to present a voluntary contribution award to Paul Chohan.” Cornershot Annual Vol. 12, Number 1 December, 2019 page 11
Field Hockey BC Volunteer Recognition and Annual Awards Dinner 2018 (continued) Athlete Program Support Corrie Guraliuk Corrie has been volunteering her time within Field Hockey BC programming for a great many years, not just in the area of team management but also as a voluntary technical official. In many cases Corrie seemingly finds the extra time in her schedule to assist us in both capacities at the same event, something for which we remain truly grateful. In 2018 Corrie was an extraordinary resource to Field Hockey BC in the management of teams and athletes. Corrie agreed to take on a team management role with Team BC at this year’s National Championships in Toronto. Roger Goodwin Over the course of the last three seasons, Roger Goodwin has volunteered to take on the considerable task of athlete program management and has done so at both the regional and provincial level. Roger has an extraordinary attention to detail and will not rest until the job has been completed in its entirety - even if this means tracking down uniforms from different pockets of the province and returning them to us in good order! In 2018, Roger was an absolute stand-out candidate not only managing his own team but also assisting other voluntary managers, especially at this year’s National Championships in Toronto Ontario. Community Club and League Awards On Behalf of Field Hockey Victoria Al Chorley Al Chorley has been a member of the Men’s Field Hockey Team for the last 6 years, encouraging other players and managing the D team specifically. When he is not playing on the turf, he is frequently cleaning it. He has put in hundreds of hours cleaning leaves and debris off of the field and the spectator areas, keeping the fields clean and safe. Most Karen Gray accepting on notably though, Al Chorley stepped up over the last 3 years to behalf of Al Chorley coach the men’s recreational teams and run the practices. Field Hockey BC Volunteer Recognition and Annual Awards Dinner 2017 (continued) Community Club and League Awards (continued) On Behalf of Field Hockey Victoria Sandy Zinkowski Sandy Zinkowski has long been a valuable member of the Victoria field hockey community both as a coach in junior league, a player in women’s league and as the go-to athletic therapist. Outside of her playing and coaching commitments, Sandy has volunteered either her time as an athletic therapist on site or has been the coordinator to assure qualified staff are at the field for Victoria-hosted tournaments including the Bridgman Cup and a variety of regional and provincial high school championships. On Behalf of Surrey Sharks Field Hockey Club Oscar D’Mello The Surrey Sharks Field Hockey Club would like to recognize Oscar D’Mello for his incredible dedication to the club since 2006. In that time, he has served as president and on the executive. He has coached both Juniors girls’ and Senior Women’s teams and Oscar was instrumental in creating the very popular 7-aside Sharks tournament which still occurs annually. On Behalf of Richmond Field Hockey Club Kathleen Wong Kathleen is currently the voluntary President of Richmond Field Hockey Club, a role she stepped up to take on over six years ago. Kathleen has modernized the club in the development and utilization of a multitude of media platforms including a new club website. She has been instrumental in developing athlete opportunities at the club, continues to champion young women in sport, and has built strong connections at the Municipal level. Cornershot Annual FHBC Athlete Program Review (by Donna Cumming) This past season, Field Hockey BC enjoyed great success in the performance and development level athlete programs. We would like to say a huge thank you to all athletes, coaches and team managers who took part in 2018/2019 Regional and Provincial Programs. FHBC is very privileged to have the opportunity to work with all of you. This past season saw FHBC continue a comprehensive Skills Matrix for each stage of learning within our Learn 2 Train, Train 2 Train, Train 2 Compete and Learn 2 Win programs. The FHBC Skills Matrix consists of the following nine ‘Pillars’: 1. Technical (skill acquisition for athletes). 2. Tactical (skill acquisition for athletes). 3. Psychological (skill acquisition for athletes). 4. Physiological (skill development for athletes). 5. Physical Literacy (skill development for athletes). 6. Socio-Emotional (skill development for athletes). 7. Life Skills. 8. Pedagogy (skill acquisition for coaches). 9. Coach and Parent Education/Mentorship. FHBC Regional Programs LEARN 2 TRAIN (Under 13) REGIONAL PROGRAM: Weekly training October - November, 2018 and January - February, 2019. 2019 was the eighth year of the FHBC Learn 2 Train Regional Development Program. Cornershot Annual FHBC Athlete Program Review (continued) TRAIN 2 TRAIN (Under 15) REGIONAL PROGRAM: Weekly training October, 2018 to April 2019. Festival: April 25-28 at Tamanawis Park, Surrey. The FHBC Train 2 Train Regional Program remains focused on technical skill acquisition bringing in additional elements of the nine ‘pillar’ FHBC Skills Matrix. The current strategic format targets technical skill progression, allowing athletes to train and compete in a non-outcome related competitive environment. This year’s Festival welcomed 152 female athletes and 38 male athletes from the Island, Lower Mainland and Interior regions of the Province drafted into 8 female teams and 2 male teams for a round-robin event. In addition, Field Hockey BC had the pleasure of welcoming a U15 girls team from Field Hockey Alberta for the first time to our Regional Festival, to create a true Western Canadian Event! Athletes impressed coaches and selectors using their learned skills from the training program in game situations. Selections for the Provincial Program were taken from the Regional Festival with Team BC training beginning in May and running until the National Championship held in July. Action from various Regional Programs throughout the year TRAIN 2 COMPETE (Under 18) REGIONAL PROGRAM: Weekly training October, 2018 to April, 2019. Tournament: April 11-14 at UBC, Vancouver. The FHBC Train 2 Compete Regional Program is a balanced Skills Matrix program that focuses on athlete development across all ‘pillars’. This year’s Tournament welcomed 136 female athletes and 37 male athletes from the Island, Lower Mainland and Interior regions of the Province forming 8 female teams and 2 male teams. Cornershot Annual Senior Women’s Indoor Tournament Early February saw 8 teams from the Island, Lower Mainland, and Alberta duke it out at the Duncan Island Savings Centre for the 2019 Senior Women’s BC Indoor Championship. It was a competitive weekend full of close matches and intense battles resulting in an all Vikes final.
