Cooma, Tumut & The Snowy Mountains 6 Day Tour Itinerary Thursday 18 to Tuesday 23 February 2021 DAY 1: Thurs 18 February Sydney to Cooma Today we head off on our 6-day adventure to Cooma, Tumut and the Snowy Mountains. Once we have completed our pre-arranged pick-ups, we hit the highway and head to Canberra for lunch at the Yowani Country Club. This afternoon we take a sightseeing drive through Canberra and follow the picturesque mountain ranges south to Cooma. On arrival in Cooma we settle into our motel and meet again for dinner. Cooma, Tumut & The Snowy Mountains 6 Day Tour DAY 2: Friday 19 February Cooma We intend on seeing Cooma in detail this morning. First stop is at the Visitors Information Centre to collect our local guide for a guided tour of town. Originally settled in 1823 it became the headquarters for the building of the Snowy Mountain Hydro Electric Scheme which commenced in 1949 and was the biggest engineering project ever undertaken in the world. In the main street of Cooma see the Mosaic Time Walk in Centennial Park depicting the life of the Monaro from its origins through to the present. A statue of Banjo’s Paterson’s immortal mountain man, “The Man from Snowy River” is also in the park. We then visit the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre, This is a state of the art visitor facility that showcases the amazing story of the Snowy Mountains Scheme from the early construction days to the role the Scheme plays today in the development of Australia. The centre houses a comprehensive exhibition hall that includes a photographic collection, models, exhibits and interactive displays about this remarkable project. Lunch today is at the Cooma RSL Club before our afternoon visit to a very popular museum. Located in the beautiful, historic and functioning Cooma Gaol, the museum highlights the varied 200-year history of the Correctional Services in New South Wales. We are met by a trained inmate guide who takes us through the museum and gives us a talk about life in gaol – from the First Fleet to Modern Corrections. ACCOMMODATION Cooma Motor Inn MEALS Breakfast & dinner in Motel, lunch at the Cooma RSL DAY 3: Sat 20 February The Snowy Mountains Late morning, we head across to Jindabyne. The original town of Jindabyne was inundated by the Snowy Scheme and the new township now sits on the shores of Lake Jindabyne. Our first stop is at the Snowy Region Visitor Centre in Jindabyne. Here we can see a short film presentation and then enjoy morning tea in the adjacent café. From Jindabyne we join the Alpine Way and enter the Kosciuszko National Park onto Thredbo. Thredbo is Australia’s premier alpine destination. Open 365 days a year it’s home to the countries longest ski runs, best mountain bike and hiking trails and a beautiful alpine village situated in a picturesque valley in the heart of the famous Kosciuszko National Park. We have time to enjoy the village and our picnic lunch, then we have the option Image courtesy Destination NSW to take a return journey on the Mt. Kosciuszko chairlift. The ride takes 15 minutes one way and rises 560 vertical metres, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys of the Kosciuszko National Park. There is a café and restaurant where we can sit back and enjoy the view before we return to the village and make our way back to Cooma with some time to relax before dinner. Cooma, Tumut & The Snowy Mountains 6 Day Tour DAY 4: Sunday 21 February The Snowy Mountains This morning we drive across to Adaminaby. The present township of Adaminaby resulted from the damming of the Eucumbene River for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. The original township was relocated before the surrounding valleys were flooded and over 100 buildings were dismantled and re-erected at the new site. We see the Big Trout for a photo opportunity and have a short break here on our way to Yarrangobilly. The caves here are an outstanding feature of Kosciuszko National Park. They are amongst the most highly decorated caves in Australia and have attracted visitors for more than a hundred years. Within the caves are some of the finest calcite formations to be seen in the world. A unique feature of Yarrangobilly is the thermal pool. Filled with naturally heated Image courtesy Destination NSW mineralised water, it has an incoming flow of approximately 1400 kilolitres per hour, which maintains a constant temperature of 27 degrees Celsius. We enjoy a packed lunch here followed by a guided tour of the easily accessible Jillabenan Cave. This afternoon we head into Tumut and check into our accommodation for the next two nights. Our motel is on four acres of landscaped gardens surrounded with mountain views and enjoys a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. ACCOMMODATION Cooma Motor Inn MEALS Breakfast & dinner in Motel, picnic lunch included DAY 5: Monday 22 February Tumut Tumut is the most northern town in the Snowy River Scheme with an elevation of 280 metres above sea. This area is surrounded by streams and rivers famous for their trout fishing and fertile grounds. Poplars, elms, oaks and maples line the streets of this attractive town. We begin our morning with a guided tour of Tumut, then we visit the Tumut Broom Factory – the Tumut district grows the highest-grade broom millet in NSW and 90% of the State’s requirements come from this area. Next, we have a short drive to Tumut Valley Violets for morning tea and a tour. With over 950 named varieties it is reputedly the largest African violet farm in Australia and is located in the grounds of the 120-year-old Tumut Plains School House. Now we are off to Tumbarumba, a delightful small country town which is largely untouched by the modern world. Lunch today is at the Pioneer Women’s Cottage which includes an excellent collection of domestic artefacts, agricultural machinery and local crafts. On our way back to Tumut we visit one of the local fruit orchards Road Side Stalls in Batlow and stock up on local produce. Cooma, Tumut & The Snowy Mountains 6 Day Tour DAY 6: Tues 23 February Return to Sydney Unfortunately, our tour has come to an end and we return to Sydney, completing our fabulous 6-day holiday to Cooma, Tumut and The Snowy Mountains area.
