17 18 TALES FROM A PARISHIONER No Choice! It was a choice that wasn’t really a choice. Did I want to watch Antiques Roadshow or a chemistry program! They knew I liked neither but with a biscuit and a cuppa I left them to it. How often in life do we face the same dilemma? Do we speed to get home or obey the speed limit and be late? Do we do the housework or do something fun? When I was young it was no contest – reading! In bed with the curtain hooked around the bedhead on a moon-lit night. When sent out to play, a book hidden up my jumper then on the swings, reading, until time to go home with the book again hidden. Even in school – a book on my knee and when the teacher ap- proached crossed legs raised and hid the book. And yes, I failed maths. I couldn’t even behave in church. During the sermon I read the prayers for the dead – interesting bits to be found at the back of a URC hymnal in Scotland! I always loved reading. It started when I was about 5 years old, I was giv- en all the Famous Five and Secret Seven books. I put them in order, started at number one and just kept on reading until I’d finished them all. Reading while walking home I walked straight past our house – lucky we were the third from the end of the pavement – but Mum did laugh. Ex- cused art as I was a rubbish painter and allowed to read. Every day I went to the library to change a book but weekends were a worry, what if I ran out of books? I was the heroine who saved the family; the fearless explorer who discovered new creatures; a brave and totally unselfish per- son. In reality a shy child whose friends lived in books. But what a great world I lived in! We have an eclectic collection of books from poetry to HG Wells – though I must admit the HG Ws are not mine! I just dust then return them to the shelf. Mine range from Henri Nouwen to Maeve Binchy to Stephen King and beyond. Many years ago, I sold my hard backs, all novels, to buy doll’s house furniture. At the last minute after carrying around 200 books in to the shop I rescued one of them – The Day of the Triffids Omnibus by John Wyndham!!! And have read it several times since. The Roadmend- er by Michael Fairless is another hidden gem. Written in 1902 the text shines from the pages, one can feel the dust as the farm vehicle trundles along the track. And today – I have a Kindle. I can carry 30+ books in my handbag; to read while at the dentist; while my other half is taking photo- graphs; while waiting for a tardy child; and as for in bed – weren’t Kindles developed for dark nights when sleep escapes me?
