FIRE DEPARTMENT CORALVILLE CONNECTION 3 Iowa Firefighters Memorial Coralville is home to the Iowa Firefighters Memorial, making Iowa the first state to have a dedicated memorial park to honor the service of firefighters in the state. Located off 1st Avenue just north of Interstate 80 exit 242, the Iowa Firefighters Memorial is open 365 days a year. Construction began in 1992 and finished in 1994.The memorial park includes a memorial wall, sculpture, eternal flame, and visitor center. The memorial wall lists the names of Iowa firefighters who died in the line of duty, firefighters who served ten years or more who have passed away, and firefighters who died while an active member of a fire department. Each June, a memorial service is held at the Iowa Firefighters Memorial to honor those added to the memorial wall. 2019 marks the 25th memorial service. Today, the department is staffed with over 40 volunteers and five paid members, and provides fire, medical, hazardous material, and water rescue services for Coralville, East Lucas Township, and the University of Iowa Research Park.
