GALMUN2022 March 21, 2022 On behalf of Ambassador Thomas R. Nides and the American people, I am thrilled to welcome you to the Seventh Annual Galilee Model United Nations Conference in Nazareth - “Ending Violence: Making the World a Safer Place for Future Generations.” The United Nations is an instrument of peace and security. In the words of President Joe Biden, “we affirm and uphold the human dignity and human rights under which nations in common cause, more than seven decades ago, formed this institution.” The United States supports Model UN in Israel as it empowers participants to carry forth these values, as well as the research, public speaking, and conflict resolution skills gained in modeling this institution. The Model UN experience gives participants tools for tackling complex challenges. Participants gain empathy, the ability to understand and share the perspectives of others. They build fact-based arguments, researching conflicts and proposing paths to peace. They practice conflict resolution, bringing people with differing viewpoints together through communication. They learn consensus-building, how to create agreement where overlapping interests align. With this toolbox full of skills, Model UN delegates can drive real-life change in their communities, country, and world. Congratulations on taking part in his year’s GALMUN in Nazareth. The Embassy proudly supported the first Galilee MUN conference seven years ago, and it is encouraging to see its significant growth in size and scope since then. Together, we have succeeded in bridging diverse groups of students: Arab and Jewish, Israeli and Palestinian, secular and religious. You have proven it is possible to achieve one of our greatest goals – creating the conditions for a lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. We value the partnership with the NGO Retorika for Multiculturalism and St. Joseph’s Seminary and High School, and we are very happy to once again support this enriching educational initiative! I hope you make the most of this exciting opportunity. Joe Wierichs Public Affairs Officer U.S. Embassy Jerusalem
GALMUN2022 I am honored to welcome you to the Seventh Annual Galilee Model United Nations Conference in Nazareth, organized by Retorika for Multiculturalism and St. Joseph Seminary & High School. EcoPeace Middle East knows the importance of diplomacy when it comes to environmental peacebuilding. Indeed, alongside our ‘bottom up’ programs, ‘top down’ advocacy is a key component of our work. We are thrilled to support this fantastic initiative aimed at educating students about the complex realities in our region, and demonstrating how diplomacy, and the systems set up by the United Nations, can be used to navigate them. EcoPeace is a unique organization - the only regional organization that brings together Jordanians, Palestinians, and Israelis to create shared solutions for the most water- scarce region on the planet. We are currently more than 60 staff working out of offices in Ramallah, Amman, and Tel Aviv. Water is at the center of the environmental crisis in the Middle East. In our region, climate change and conflict have made a problematic situation even more desperate. Water can be a source of either conflict or collaboration. At EcoPeace, we believe real change is possible when we all work together. We aim to educate that failure to cooperate on climate resilience threatens our very survival and that we simply cannot meet the challenges of the climate crisis without working together. We believe we can turn the climate crisis from a threat multiplier, as it is commonly seen, into a multiplier of opportunities for a better future region wide. Thank you to the Conference Director for your dedication to inclusion and diversity, elements important to the future of our region, the American Embassy for showing your support year after year, and most importantly to the students participating. You are the future. Gidon Bromberg, Co-Founder and Israel Director
GALMUN2022 Dear Advisors, Chairs, Delegates, and Distinguished Guests, Welcome to the seventh annual Galilee Model UN conference in Nazareth! Yes, we meet face to face at last! This is really happening! And it is absolutely incredible! We are proudly hosting 400 students, educators, and guests from all over Israel. In the past two years, our lives have been turned upside down due to the spread of COVID-19. It has caused us to doubt whether we can ever return to the world we knew before the pandemic. Our gathering today testifies to our resilience and endurance in the face of a tragedy. But the pandemic has led to the false belief that the world has finally become united. In reality, the world is still as divided as ever, and countries are still incapable of putting their differences aside. We face a future filled with uncertainties, made worse by the threat of climate disasters, and escalated by our aggression towards the environment. Time and time again we choose war over peace, diminishing the prospects of a secure future for the next generations. The recent war in the Ukraine is a case in point. Many special events are marked by the UN calendar during this two-day conference. March 21st commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the International Day of Forests, while March 22nd celebrates World Water Day. These days remind us of the responsibilities we have towards the environment and towards our fellow human beings. By attending GALMUN 2022, you have chosen to be part of the solution and not the problem. In these two days, you will be dealing with issues of similar significance by focusing on the role that violence plays in intensifying global problems. You will mainly focus in the debate on violence towards children, women, the LGBTQ community, refugees, and wildlife. We do hope that these two days will awaken in you a sense of activism for the vulnerable and marginalized in society. Violence violates our right to security and dignity. We can put an end to it by taking a stand. I would like to thank so many people for making the dream of GALMUN 2022 come into reality. Special thanks to Retorika for Multiculturalism for organizing the conference, especially Mr. Khalil Abu Nofal for working tirelessly to sustain the vision we have through GALMUN. I would like to extend a special thank you to the school principal Mr. Seman Abu Sene and my colleagues at St. Joseph Seminary & High School for their generosity and encouragement. The MUN graduates have played a key role in allowing this conference to take place. They have donated generously believing in the value of MUN and its ability to transform the lives of high school students. Special thanks to Ayoub Farah, Katharina Kruger, Katrina Farah, Rosol Sharbini, Jinad Abdel Kader, Hana’a Abu Dawoud, Firas Khalifa, Kenda Khatib, Ibrahim Fakhoury, Roa’a Zoabi, Ahmad Istaitih and the Grade 12 MUN students for their long hours of work. Special thanks to the US Embassy and EcoPeace for
GALMUN2022 covering the costs of transportation. Finally, a special thanks to the New Grand Palace Halls for providing us with the funds to cover the cost of the student packages. It makes me really proud to think of the number of people who have assisted us in carrying out this immense and important project. Finally, I call upon each and every one of you to truly be transformed during this conference by becoming an ambassador for peace wherever you go. May you illuminate the darkness of this world, turning hate into love. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Wishing you a meaningful learning experience and a lovely time, Dr. Elias Farah Conference Director
GALMUN2022 Dear Advisors, Chairs, Delegates, Admin Staff and Guests, My name is Firas Khalifa; I am 18 years old and this year I have the privilege of serving as the Secretary General of Galmun. It is my honor to welcome you to our seventh annual Galilee Model United Nations conference. I would like to start by thanking you for taking part in this conference and for believing in the power of collaboration to solve global problems. Our world needs your engagement and attention more than ever. Since I became a member of the MUN club in our school, I started to recognize the world in which we live. We face the greatest cascade of crises of our lifetime. Therefore, I deeply believe that we, as the young generation, have responsibility towards the world’s future. We should firstly become knowledgeable of the most serious problems that our world is currently facing. Secondly, we must cooperate to find just solutions for the world’s crises through open dialogue. The MUN program has always been the perfect platform for this. Being an MUN student for the past four years granted me the opportunity to overcome the fear of public speaking, nurture my personality, embrace teamwork and network with new people. Through this letter, I sadly announce that my MUN experience as a high-school student has come to an end and that this conference will be my last. However, I promise to persist in my effort to enhance my community and the world using all the knowledge and tools I have acquired over the years. Violence has been and still is a serious global problem. Each year, 1.6 millions people worldwide lose their lives to violence. Nazareth and the Arab community at large has witnessed a horryfing increase in the number of victims of violent acts. Hence, we need to take a stand and to show the world that we aim for a brighter peaceful future. This has led us to this year’s theme: Ending Violence: Making the World a Safer Place for Future Generations. In each and every committee, you will discuss and explore an issue related to a certain aspect of violence. Two days of discussion will hopefully leave you with a deeper understanding of how violence is harming our world and how we can bring an end to it.
GALMUN2022 Despite the challenges and the corona pandemic which could have easily prevented us from hosting GALMUN this year, we, the SG team, our school and our director, have insisted on making this years’ conference face to face. We could not have done anything without the cooperation and support of the wonderful team: Kenda, Roaa, Ahmad, and of course, our esteemed director, Dr. Elias Farah. I hope you have a great time and a fruitful debate at GALMUN. I encourage you to participate as much as you can during the debate in order to maximize your enjoyment and learning experience. Sincerely, Firas Khalifa Secretary General
GALMUN2022 Dear Delegates, Honorable Chairs, Admins, Advisors and Distinguished Guests, Welcome to Galmun 2022! Four years ago, in the ninth grade, our journey started when we took our first steps in a new different world of discussions and socializing. At the start of our journey, we faced many obstacles and experienced ups and downs. Our destination seemed far and unclear, but these challenges and obstacles only pushed us onwards and brought us here today. Looking back at the archive of memories we created, people we met, friends we made, and knowledge we gained, we see that our hard work was worth it. Four years ago, we worked cooperatively together for the first time as admin staff in GALMUN 2019. Hand in hand we proudly stand here and introduce ourselves as the executive team of GALMUN 2022. This moment makes us feel extremely grateful for choosing MUN as a path in our life. Due to the international spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s GALMUN was held virtually on zoom, but this year, we are more than happy to welcome you all to our face-to-face conference. We hope you enjoy your time here at GALMUN. We have worked so hard in order to make this experience one of the best you have ever had. We are positive that you will feel at home, just remember that MUN is FUN. When we started brainstorming themes for this year, the first one that came to mind is violence. It is a widespread issue that requires the most attention and urgent solutions. We took the responsibility and the power we have and decided to focus mainly on solving the different aspects of violence, and protecting all vulnerable groups that are suffering from violence until this day, such as child soldiers, refugees, prisoners and many more. And we are also going to address some of the world’s biggest conflicts in committees such as the Security Council, Historical Security Council and Crisis. This year our goal , as stated in our theme, is making the world a safer place for future generations. And it is your and our responsibility to make sure that we contribute to achieving this goal by the end of the conference. We are dependent on you - our distinguished delegates - to contribute to the debate and be passionate about forming a better future for the generations to follow. May GALMUN 2022 be a memorable experience. Sincerely, Keenda Khatib, Deputy SG Ahmad Istaitih, SG Assistant Roaa Zoubi, SG Assistant
