St John's Campus Hear from the Daniel Keylock and Matt Bell as well as reading about Year 1 'in the past' excursions and more. In this Section From Daniel Keylock and Matt Bell New Gymnasium Update National Science Week in the ELC Having fun in the Past! From Daniel Keylock and Matt Bell Schools are complex places with many people interacting regularly and sharing limited resources. Whilst the large majority of interactions are positive, things sometimes go wrong, people disagree or people are not as caring as they could be toward each other. When these sorts of things happen, understanding others’ perspectives and mending bridges are important so that young people can learn from these moments. We also have to remember that young people are not little adults. It is at these times that it is important to have a framework that supports students to navigate difficult situations. We would all love for our children to have positive experiences at school all the time, but experience tells us that this isn’t realistic. Childhood is tough at times. It’s not magical and wondrous all of the time, nor should it be. Without some challenges, students are unable to develop resilience. Students at times will experience moments of unfairness, anger, frustration, jealousy and tension. Sometimes they will act unkindly toward others, be involved in a disagreement, experience unkindness or witness it. At Concordia College, we have chosen to use Restorative Practices as our preferred framework for supporting students when difficult situations occur. Whilst there is no foolproof way to resolve all matters successfully, research shows that Restorative Practices allows for students to: learn how to better self-regulate learn to better understand others’ perspectives and experiences learn to take ownership of harm they may have caused to others show a willingness and have the tools to repair harm that has occurred learn strategies for having difficult conversations. At the heart of Restorative Practices is empathy and forgiveness. Concordia College’s aim through the restorative process, is to teach students how to navigate conflict and learn to understand each other better. In doing so, we are hopeful that students will be able to show each other empathy and forgiveness and transfer these critical life skills into everyday life. Whilst we may not experience a perfect outcome in every situation, we endeavour to make sure that students feel listened to, respected and supported both during and after the process to ensure the best possible outcome for all involved. The partnership between students, staff and parents is critical in the success of these conversations, and as such we would encourage you to speak to staff when conflict occurs to discuss how you can be a part of this process.
Daniel Keylock and Matt Bell Year 3 Teacher and Year 6 Teacher New Gymnasium Update An update about plans for a new whole of College gymnasium has been provided by the Concordia Campus Business Manager, Mick Hoopmann. Read more... National Science Week in the ELC The children in the ELC were full of big questions and wonderings as they participated in National Science Week last week. The children experienced tasting food indigenous to Australia with students from the Senior School. Many were risk-takers in trying green-ant jam! We joined a virtual simultaneous morning tea with ‘Little Scientists Australia’ who showed us different ways to explore food with our senses and Mrs Wells explored colour mixing with us. The children were enthusiastic to extend their inquiries through their own interests and instigated several of their own investigations. These included investigating magnets, an experiment growing vegetables and exploring the physics behind bridge building. Budding scientists! The ELC Team Having fun in the Past! The Year 1 students are continuing to learn about the past and have engaged in a number of exciting, stimulating and engaging learning opportunities. They have particularly enjoyed a recent excursion to Ayers House and the Migration Museum. At Ayers House, the children had an opportunity to pretend they were applying to the Head Housekeeper to become servants in the grand old home. They needed to show an ability to problem solve, collaborate and demonstrate confidence as they participated in a variety of household activities. They polished the beautiful staircase, carried trays with fine china, wore aprons, and worked hard in the kitchen with all the old utensils. Suffice to say, the children passed with flying colours and all were awarded a position in the house. In the Migration Museum, the children learned more about the First Australians and the many languages they spoke. They learnt about different colonies arriving in Australia and gained a better understanding of what migration meant. The children learnt about what school was like in the past and all agreed that school today is a lot more fun than in the 1800s. A wonderful day was had by all. The Year 1 Team Back to top
Concordia Campus Hear from the Business Manager and read about Strike a Chord results, Indigenous Food Tastings and more. In this Section From the Concordia Campus Business Manager “Strike a Chord” National Chamber Music Competition Results Middle School Community Service at The Magdalene Centre Brett Hunt Theatre-in-Education Performance String Quartet and Two Vocalists perform in Chapel Indigenous Food Tastings Adelaide Hills Careers Expo - Rescheduled Student Achievements From the Concordia Campus Business Manager The second phase of the current College master plan lists a new whole of College Gymnasium as the next building project. The College has been working closely with its Architects, Brown Falconer, and other stakeholders over the past year to locate and design the new gymnasium. After a comprehensive review, it was approved by the College Board that the new gymnasium will be located on the Highgate Lodge site. The current one-court gym was built in the late 1990s to cater for 500 students and is now insufficient for the current needs of an amalgamated College. The new gym will provide two full-sized courts and associated changerooms, three learning areas, a weights room, movement room and café. David Serotzki, the Concordia Campus Head of PE and Boys' Sport Coordinator, said, "We are very proud of our PE and Sport programs that have grown significantly in the past 20 years, but both have relied on a single-court gymnasium, as its alternative to outdoor activity, at a campus which has grown from 600 to 900 students in the same time. The new facility will increase flexibility of options in PE because it will reduce the compromise that is currently unavoidable with up to five PE classes operating in any given lesson across the week. Additionally, our burgeoning sport program - which includes (across girls' and boys' sport) 17 netball teams, 16 basketball teams and 23 volleyball teams - will benefit greatly with the option of multiple indoor court spaces. There will be new opportunities for more indoor matches and multiple, simultaneous combinations of sports. We look forward eagerly to the expanded opportunities Concordia can offer its students in learning, personal development, wellbeing and elite sporting pathways, so we can build further on the hard work and conscientious application of the PE Faculty and Sport Department that has brought the College so far already." Both the new Gymnasium and the St John's Campus redevelopment will be constructed at the same time so as to provide economies of scale. The College is currently going through the tender process to obtain a builder to manage both projects.
This exciting new project will not only service the College, it will also continue to service the needs of the local community after hours. The plans have recently been lodged with the City of Unley for approval. Upon approval, the College hopes to commence construction early in 2022 with a completion date of January 2023. A fly through of the concept drawing will be shared with the College Community soon. Mick Hoopmann Business Manager - Concordia Campus “Strike a Chord” National Chamber Music Competition Results Concordia’s String Quartet 1 - the Piruli Quartet - has had a very busy couple of weeks. Having won their section in the Adelaide Eisteddfod last week (an outstanding achievement in itself), they then participated in the National Chamber Music competition finals on Sunday as one of just twelve ensembles chosen from across Australia. Originally, the quartet was to travel to Melbourne to compete; however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, and as the only finalist from SA, their performance was live-streamed from Grainger Studios – home of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. The quality of all performances was outstanding and whilst narrowly missing out on a place, they did win the prestigious Flinders Quartet Mentorship Prize. This is a 12-month mentorship with the Flinders Quartet, awarded to a string quartet that shows commitment and potential to take their ensemble to the next level. The prize includes 10 mentorship sessions with Flinders Quartet members; two sessions on group development, career planning and concert presentation; performance in a Flinders Quartet subscription concert, including travel to and accommodation in Melbourne if required; and the opportunity to observe the Flinders Quartet in rehearsal throughout the year. Mentoring/rehearsal sessions will take place remotely via an online platform where necessary. In addition, they received $500 for making it into the finals. Concordia can be immensely proud of this achievement. The students involved are: Jasmine (12LMAC) Haneulle (12KBEN) Sterling (11SBUD) Caleb (11JLEY) Mat Noble Director of Music Middle School Community Service at The Magdalene Centre On Saturday 14 August a group of Middle School students and parents prepared and served dinner to the patrons at The Magdalene Centre in the city. We all enjoyed the experience and are grateful for the opportunity to help in the community.
A massive thank you to the whole school community for your generous donations of food, money and clothing, with special thanks to the Markou family for the donation of chicken for the main meal. The support from the school community ensures the night is successful. Lastly, thank you to the parents (Wendy McLeod & Liann Tape) for organising the event and to Nicolette McClure for assisting on the night. Chelsea, Miriam and Olivia Brett Hunt Theatre-in-Education Performance 2021 has seen the Arts industry almost decimated due to restrictions and cancellations. So, when we were given a small window of opportunity, we were delighted to welcome an annual guest to our community, Brett Hunt. A singer-songwriter and theatre-in-education performer, Brett weaves historical narrative through song and guitar, captivating his audience. This performance focused on the Vietnam War, inspired by his father Frankie who featured in Red Gum’s iconic I Was Only Nineteen. The performance left Senior History students with a new perspective and understanding of their forthcoming curriculum studies. Vanessa Narino-Terry Acting Head of Humanities String Quartet and Two Vocalists perform in Chapel On Tuesday 24 August, our Concordia Campus staff and students enjoyed an item in Chapel by our String Quartet 2, together with two vocalists. It was an incredibly moving piece, played and sung beautifully by all involved. We hope you enjoy the video below. Indigenous Food Tastings This year’s Science Week theme was: Food By Design. To investigate this topic further, a number of classes participated in food tasting sessions in the Yangadlitya Resource Centre where they tried a range of foods indigenous to Australia. Students from ELC to Year 11 became “risk takers” (which is one of the IB Learner Profile attributes) and tried: lemon myrtle, karkalla, quandongs, wattleseeds, native currants, wild rosella, green ant marmalade, samphire, sea blight and finger lime.
