                 Company & Team Handbook | 2020-2021 Season

state and local regulations.

dancer to uphold all policies, rules and expectations including scheduled season calendar, payment calendar and
Summer commitments as a member of the IDA Company and Team. Dancer must have Contract turned into the Dance
Director, Stefanie Allen, before receiving placement and schedule.

Vision:
Indy Dance Academy Company and Team levels offer the dedicated dancer the opportunity to discover their own
potential and further their technical training, while experiencing the camaraderie of working and growing together as a
team.
IDA's Company and Team instruction provides dancers with a strong focus on their individual growth within their
technical foundation and dance education. Dancers will receive quality training through curriculum-based classes in
multiple dance techniques and styles.
Throughout the dance season, dancers will participate in studio performances, regional and national competitions,
conventions and outreach performances throughout the Indianapolis community.
Company and Team Dancers must possess the following…
    • Demonstrate the effort needed to accomplish goals set by the Director and themselves.
    • Be eager to develop their artistry and technical skills in the art of dance.
    • Be self-motivated and show self-discipline.
    • Show respect to their instructors, choreographers, teammates and themselves.
    • Be physically fit and demonstrate mind-body awareness.

Levels:
Dancers are placed onto Company and Team levels based off audition and by IDA Dance Director's, Stefanie Allen,
decision in order to properly develop their technique and to ensure quality instruction with level-based curriculum and
choreography. If your dancer is not placed on an IDA Company and Team level for the upcoming season, he or she will
be placed in IDA’s Company Prep Program. Dancers placed into the Company Prep Program will receive a curated
schedule of accelerated classes in order to build a stronger foundation in their dance technique.

COMPANY COMPETITION LEVELS: Indy Dance Academy Company (IDAC) provides the serious dancer the necessary
tools in order to excel into collegiate level programs and as professionals in the performing arts. Dancers will study
techniques at the pre-professional level in Ballet, Pre- Pointe / Pointe, Jazz, Modern, Tap and Contemporary.
Development and exploration of other styles such as Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Hip Hop and Improvisation will also be
studied.

*a dancer's age is determined as of 1/1/2021

TEAM COMPETITION & APPRENTICE LEVELS: Indy Dance Academy Team (IDAT) is geared for the dancer looking to be a
part of a like-minded community while elevating their potential and building a stronger foundation in their dance skill-
set. These Team levels will empower the budding artist by growing their self-confidence and providing them with a
challenge within performance opportunities, learning new dance techniques and being a part of a team. Dancers weekly
curriculum will include techniques in Ballet, Jazz and Hip Hop as well as focusing on proper conditioning and stretching.
Development and exploration of other dance styles such as Contemporary, Musical Theatre, etc. will be studied.
        • Ruby Competition Team: approx. ages 9-18
        • Amethyst Apprentice Team: approx. ages 6-10

*a dancer's age is determined as of 1/1/2021

Placement:
Company and Team levels and the Company Prep Program are in place to properly develop the individual dancer's
technique and to ensure quality instruction within IDA's level-based curriculum and choreography. Understanding that
not all dancers will have the same pathway in their dance education, the level placement is essential. A dancer's training
is developed individually as well as their pathway, provided by the Dance Director, into placement of IDA Company and
Team levels, technique classes, group routines, etc.
Director's placement gives the opportunity for the dancer to develop, refine and excel their dance training, technique,
performance qualities and artistry.
Dancers will be placed into Company and Team levels, group routines, specialty routines and class levels based off of
audition and Director's decision. Dancers are not guaranteed placement into the level in which they are auditioning for.
The Director may choose the Company Prep Program for the dancer prior to placement on the apprenticeship or
competition levels.
Number of group routines, specialties, style of routines, choreographer, music, costuming, dancer's placement within
the company / team and all other aspects of the company and team are at the Director's decision. Not all dancers who
are auditioning for a “specialty routine” (solo, duet and / or trio) will be placed in said routine. Parent and dancer input
regarding choreographer, style, and duet / trio partners will not be considered.

participate fully in all scheduled classes, rehearsals, workshops, intensives and are required to participate in all IDA
performances and competitions (Regional and National) that are assigned by the Director in order to fulfill their full
season commitment. Dancers may not drop group or specialty dances that they are cast in for any reason.
Dancers and their parents are required to follow the IDAC and IDAT attendance policies, payment and season calendar.
IDAC and IDAT commitments are required for members and take precedence over any and all other activities.

days. Scheduled dancers will need to be available for all days that they are scheduled to dance including the last full day of

re-casting, placement, choreography, restaging rehearsals and administrative cost.

For the Dancer
The first step in becoming a successful dancer is to make the commitment to yourself and your instructors. IDA Company
and Team dancers are expected to uphold IDA Dancer Expectations, Company Policies, Attendance Policies and
Competition and Performance Policies. Success is measured by achieving your goals and the goals set forth by your
Director.
    IDA Dancer Expectations:
    • Dancers are obligated to follow policy updates and changes put in place throughout the dance season.
    • Respect for the instructors is essential. You must display a positive attitude toward all instructors and be receptive to the
curriculum presented in order to get the most out of each class and rehearsal.
    • When an instructor takes the time to give individual correction, it should be viewed as an honor; it demonstrates how much
a teacher cares about your progress.

Indy Dance Academy Company and Team Handbook | 2020-2021 Season

    • Respect yourself, your parents or guardian and your fellow teammates.
    • Be present, be on time and ready to dance. Dance full out during all classes and rehearsals to enhance your technique and
        overall dance quality.
    • True progress is made when you look at each class, rehearsal, or performance as an opportunity to become better. Work
hard, set individual goals and be committed.
    • Wear required attire for each class.
    • Communicate all school / academic related conflicts for absentee consideration to the Dance Director. Depending on date
in question and season calendar, the absence may not be considered / approved.
    • Refrain from abusing social media and uphold good moral values both inside and outside of the studio.
    • No alcohol, drugs or smoking is permitted. If there is a suspicion of any illegal activity, we will have this person removed
from the premises immediately. If a person arrives under the influence of drugs or alcohol, we will call the Marion County
Police to have the person removed from the premises.

Self-Care: Self-care and physical maintenance is part of a dancer’s routine therefore dancers are to take the
responsibility for the care and maintenance of their body. They are to practice healthy habits and attend to the special
needs of their body. Because dancers are elite level athletes, it is important for dancers to seek out cross training and
specialists (ex. Physical Therapist) when needed. Dancers ask a lot of their body daily and it is crucial to give it the
specific care it needs to continue to perform at a high level.

For the Parent
Dance is an individual art form. It is important to encourage your dancer to set individual goals and be satisfied with
their individual goals as well as their Company and Team’s accomplishments. As a parent, the financial support of your
dancer is rewarding; a greater long-term value is showing emotional support to your dancer and their teammates.
A dancer's success depends on the support of their parent or guardian. Support and cooperation with IDA Company
and Team policies, procedures and requirements from the dancer's parents is expected. Parents are to obligated to
follow policy updates and changes put in place throughout the dance season. Displaying positive behavior in the studio
toward instructors, fellow parents, all company and team dancers, as well as our public appearances, make an important
impression on your dancer. Please always show sportsmanship.
For the success and respect of all Company and Team dancers and choreographers, communicate all school and
academic conflicts for absentee consideration to the Dance Director at the beginning of the season. Depending on
date(s) and the season calendar, the absence may not be approved as an excused absence.

Communication:
Your source for all Company and Team information will be available to you on the IDA Login of the IDA website.
Information is updated every Monday prior to 4pm. Company and Team instructors, directors, and administrative staff
are professional, dependable and excited to assist with the development and growth of your dancer. We ask that you
respect our instructional expertise and do not interrupt class or rehearsal. Please contact the Director via email, do not
text; a response should be given to you within the week.

IDAC Understudies:
Understudy roles are in place for our dancers to experience what it is to be an Understudy and the responsibilities of the
role: In professional settings, an understudy is a dancer who learns the choreography of all dancers originally cast in the
routine. Should one of the regular dancers be unable to appear on stage because of injury, the understudy may take
over the part per the Director and Choreographers’ decision. IDA is implementing the understudy role in order for our
student dancers to learn and to understand the complexities of a certain style that they may be unfamiliar with and / or
to gain greater experiences in a rehearsal setting that is at a higher level or higher average age routine than what they
normally compete to gain more knowledge in their technical growth and artistry. This does not automatically assign the
understudy role if a member is absent during a performance or competition.
Dancers assigned to understudy a routine must attend all rehearsals scheduled for their understudy role and learn
choreography for all parts of the routine. In the event an emergency arises, and a dancer originally cast in the role is
unable to perform, the understudy may step in to perform per the Director’s and Choreographer’s collective decision.
While our goal is to have our understudies prepared for this scenario, rehearsal time, dancer’s abilities, attendance,
complexities of choreography, etc. not all understudies may perform if a dancer of the original cast is unable to
participate in competition/performance. All Understudies are asked to bring a notebook into rehearsal to take notes,
corrections, and information given from the choreographer.
Understudy Fees: All accounts of dancers who are placed as an Understudy will be billed a one-time fee of $75.00 at
the beginning of the season. This fee is non-refundable if the dancer does perform in the routine that they are an
understudy for. Understudies will not incur a monthly rehearsal fee or other additional cost if the dancer remains an
    Understudy.

        • If an understudy must replace an original dancer, fees including monthly rehearsals, rehearsal workshops,
$75 for costuming, performance and /or competition costs may be incurred. These fees will be determined
on a situation basis by IDA Directors.
All dancers who are placed as an Understudy may not drop their Understudy role. All dancers who are placed as
Understudies is at the Director’s decision.
