From our General Manager Kia pai tou tatou Matariki It’s a special time for all New Zealanders to connect, celebrate and honour Tangata Whenua through sharing of stories, tikanga and language. The Browns Bay Community are coming to the conclusion of a two week celebration with a range of family-friendly and youth activities. School holidays are on the horizon so you will see a range of activities on offer. Our Safer Whanau coordinator, Deb Humphries, has been involved in organising the festival in Browns Bay and we are delighted that ANCAD is able to share in this initiative. Deb is also celebrating her 10-year work anniversary this month. We are so proud of her achievements and the impact of her work to improve outcomes for families and children, build effective networks and partnerships and effect change in our communities across Auckland and North Shore. Our training programme for community groups, coordinated by Simon Ritchie, continues to deliver 101 not-for-profit governance and management FIONA BRENNAN basics. Sandy Thompson from LEAD facilitated a great workshop on GENERAL MANAGER Collaborations and Partnerships recently and Therese Lanigan-Behrent fiona@ancad.org.nz hosted a very popular webinar on crowdfunding. The opportunity to 0800 426 223 refresh your understanding, learn something new and connect with others (0800 4ANCAD) is worth the effort. We are able to make these workshops very low cost or free due to the generous support of The Tindall Foundation. Come along to our upcoming workshops, share with others, learn from others and contribute to community development through your participation. Do you know of an organisation that needs accounting support or advice? ANCAD delivers two programmes in partnership with Massey University and Chartered Accountants New Zealand and Australia. These programmes support community organisations with professional guidance for their organisational accounts and financial management. We have capacity to assist more organisations, so do spread the word. Next week we host our 47th Annual General Meeting; we hope to see you there. A light lunch is followed by the AGM business and a chance to network and talk to us about the issues that matter to you. Over the last month I have had the opportunity to meet with some incredible community-minded volunteers and professionals. I’ve also had the opportunity to engage with a range of community networks. It is my hope that ANCAD can continue to support community-led developments and initiatives and create more opportunities for effective collaboration and a genuine opportunity to work together to strengthen our communities. My sincere thanks to all our funders, partners, supporters, staff and volunteer Board members who do the mahi and support community development on the North Shore and the Auckland region. 3

COMMUNITY EVENTS Bays Matariki Festival 2021 What is Matariki? “Matariki is more than just a cause for celebration and kai. It’s also an opportunity for all New Zealanders to come together with Māori communities to learn their stories, culture, and language, as well as engage in some rich learning opportunities” Matariki is the Māori new year and aligns with maramataka the Māori calendar. Matariki appears with the rise of the Matariki star cluster – also known as the Pleiades star cluster – and the sighting of the next new moon. “Each Iwi has their own stories and perspectives about Matariki and celebrate Matariki at different times. Some hold festivities when Matariki is first seen in the dawn sky; others celebrate after the rise of the full moon or at the beginning of the next new moon.” (source: https://gazette.education.govt.nz/articles/making-the-most-of-matariki/) Nau mai haere mai Come celebrate the Māori new year in Browns Bay by attending the Bays Matariki Festival.
