PLAYING THIS AT PICKFORD FILM CENTER AND THE Portrait of a Lady on Fire Dir: Céline Sciamma FEBRUARY & MARCH Cast: Noémie Merlant, Adèle Haenel, Valeria Golino Marianne (Noémie Merlant) is a professional painter in the late 18th century LIMELIGHT CINEMA on an unusual assignment: travel to a remote island off the coast of Brittany to paint Heloise (Adèle Haenel), a young aristocrat who refuses to sit for a painting that will be given to her future husband, a man she does not wish to marry. Under the guise of companionship, Marianne spends her days closely observing Heloise First Cow and her nights painting the portrait in secret, from memory. Though their time together is brief, the seed of an intense bond is planted, one that blossoms into Dir: Kelly Reichardt Cast: John Magaro, Orion Lee, Alia Shawkat a romance fueled by the beauty each sees in the eye of the beholder--a stirring, sensuous study of the power of the female gaze. 2020. The story follows a taciturn loner (another staple of Reichardt’s movies) who has gone west to seek his fortune. Falling in with the aforementioned trappers, he forges a connection with a Chinese immigrant and the two collaborate on a “business venture” that relies on unsanctioned use of a wealthy farmer’s prize milking cow. As with most Reichardt Greed endeavors, the plot exists to serve a finely drawn and subtly nuanced character study, and her Dir: Michael Winterbottom contemplative pacing makes an excellent counterpoint to her keenly observational style.
