Shire news Future of Bodallin Hall - Request for Comment For a number of years now, the Bodallin Hall has not been used at all by the Bodallin community and due to the lack of usage and ownership by the community, it has fallen into disrepair. Whilst the Hall served the community well in its heyday, the lack of usage in recent years has forced Council to seriously consider the Hall’s future. Therefore, in response to the above, Council is seeking public comment from the Bodallin community on the future of the Bodallin Hall. It is important all residents of the Bodallin community have the opportunity to have their say on the Hall’s future as this will enable Council to determine whether the building is retained or demolished. Council can see no purpose in allocating funding to this building on a yearly basis when there is no benefit to the community. An assessment of the buildings immediate to long-term maintenance requirements will be undertaken as well as public comment sought prior to Council decision on the Hall’s viability. Council is encouraging people to forward any comments by the close of business on Friday 31st July 2020. Should you wish to discuss this matter further please contact the undersigned on 9049 1001. Shire news Comedy Gold Tour 2020 One of the funniest touring Comedy Shows going around Australia "Comedy Gold" is back and this year the lineup is filled with Western Australia's most diverse, funniest, newest and most recognizable Standup Comedians. Introducing the comedians to you: Your M.C Cameron McLaren is a giant of the Perth comedy scene and was awarded "Best Comedy at the WA Fringeworld”. Cameron has sold out Fringe shows across the country and was handpicked by the producer of Channel 7 to be the audience MC of Telethon. The West Australian described him in this role as "There is a genuine sense of fun in his delivery…this proves infectious." Cameron is fun and loveable but can flirt with the line if the occasion requires. The audience are instantly put at ease with his silliness and you can tell he truly loves what he does. First up is new kid on the block Frankie who is on her first comedy tour. A newbie to Standup Comedy she is on work experience for this tour but don't be fooled she has a bright future ahead of her. Frankie has great stage presence and a warm charm about her. Next up is one of the fastest rising comedians on the Australian Circuit Emma Krause and the interesting thing is she only started comedy at the age of 40. Yes, that's right, at 40 she said it was time to let go of the idea of what anyone thought of her and live out one of her desires to do comedy, so she adopted a 'Just Do It' attitude and has since smashed into the comedy scene! Most recently, she auditioned for Australia’s Got Talent and she was encouraged by the judge’s response. “Emma... you need to keep doing this, because you do it very, very, very well.... I’d watch your gig anywhere... that was fantastic!” - Shane Jacobson. “I’m so glad you’re doing this, because I’m a Mum myself and if you don’t laugh, you’re gonna cry.” - Lucy Durack. Her comedy routine was chosen to be one of 30 acts that remained in the Australia’s Got Talent 2019 series as she progressed through to the Semi Finals. Your Feature act is none other than Peter Rowsthorn who is a Comedy Icon and Veteran of more than 30 years on Australia's Stages and T.V's. One of the most recognizable and much loved comedians, Rowsthorn is a high energy, fast paced standup comedian one minute and a measured character actor the next. Most recently, Peter has appeared regularly on "Thank God You're Here" series 1, 2, 3 and 4, popped up on "Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation" and can currently be seen hosting the delightful “Can We Help” on the ABC on Friday nights. But Peter is probably still best known as long-suffering husband and pants-man Brett Craig on “Kath & Kim”. W.A this is a great opportunity to reward yourself, get together with family and friends and come out and have a great belly laugh whilst supporting local comedians and venues. 6
1 July 2020 Building a drought resilient Australia Regional Australia is set to benefit today as the Australian Government gets on with the job of building national wide drought resilience. The Australian Government has invested $3.9 billion, which will grow to $5 billion, in the forward-thinking Future Drought Fund (the Fund). Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud, said this long-term, sustainable investment will make $100 million available each year to help our farmers and communities become more prepared for, and resilient to, the impacts of drought. “Drought is an enduring feature of the Australian landscape. It has economic, environmental and social impacts on our farmers, communities and landscape,” Minister Littleproud said. “I’m excited to announce the Future Drought Fund’s programs are starting to roll out from July 2020. “These programs will give farmers and communities the tools they need to prepare for, manage and sustain their livelihoods during droughts. “The programs have been developed based on expert advice from the independent Consultative Committee, led by Mr Brent Finlay, a fourth generation farmer, as well as valuable input from communities and industry during last year’s national public consultation tour on the Drought Resilience Funding Plan. “The programs will help farmers to build resilience and prepare for future droughts.” “We are funding farm business planning, greater access to information for decision-making, adoption of research and technologies, and building the drought resilience of natural resources such as soil and vegetation in agricultural landscapes. “Communities will also benefit through improved regional planning, strengthening networks, leadership and community capabilities and small-scale infrastructure projects. “This is the first suite of programs to be delivered under this initiative initially for one year. We will continue to monitor and adapt programs to make sure they are building resilience and delivering for farmers and the community. “I expect to make a further announcement on the allocation of the remaining funds after the roll out of these initial programs”. The Future Drought Fund is an important part of the Government’s Drought Response, Resilience and Preparedness Plan to deliver the support Australian farmers and communities need to be sustainable and productive. Further details on each program will be available as implementation arrangements are finalised at http://www.agriculture.gov.au/ag-farm-food/drought/future-drought-fund The eight programs, totalling $89.5 million, are: The $20m Farm Business Resilience program will provide farm businesses with training to strengthen their strategic business management skills and develop a farm business plan to build risk management capacity and drought resilience. The $10m Climate Services for Agriculture program will fund the development and delivery of interactive digital ‘climate information services’ for the agriculture sector to assist farmers to make real-time decisions. The $3m Drought Resilience Self-Assessment Tool will provide an online self-assessment tool for farmers to self-identify drought risks based on a range of social, economic and environmental indicators, and take action to build the drought resilience of their farm business. The $20.3m Drought Resilience Research and Adoption program will establish two regionally located Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hubs, and Innovation Grants will become available to research organisations, private sector, industry, not-for-profit organisations and community groups. The $15m Natural Resource Management (NRM) Drought Resilience program will fund regional NRM bodies to undertake projects to build drought resilience of natural resources on agricultural landscapes, and there will also be grants available to organisations, farmer groups and individuals to undertake NRM projects to build the drought resilience of natural resources on small scales. The $3.75m Networks for Building Drought Resilience program will support community-driven projects that enhance drought resilience and strengthen networks, including small-scale infrastructure projects to make community facilities drought resilient. The $7.45m Drought Resilience Leaders program will develop leadership capability in communities and include a mentoring component to foster uptake of innovative practices to build drought resilience of farmers and their businesses. The $10m Regional Drought Resilience Planning will provide funding to consortia of local councils or equivalent entities to develop Regional Drought Resilience Plans for agriculture and allied industries. 7

Heywire is an opportunity for young rural Australians to have their voices heard, and share what life is like in their part of the world with the rest of the nation. This annual storytelling competition, run by the ABC, showcases what it’s like to live in regional, rural and remote Australia. Winning Heywire is a chance for young people to have their story told on the ABC and see the impact their story can have. Entries are open now and close on September 16th. http://www.abc.net.au/heywire/competition/ Did You Know? Did you know the Yilgarn Agricultural Society was formed in 1926? The first show in 1932 was held in the Mechanics Institute, opposite the present two-story café. It received whole hearted support from the population. The following year in 1933 a similar show was held in Liddle’s garage, behind the present supermarket, the Institute having been burnt by an arsonist. The venue for the next three years was moved to the Greater Sports Ground, an area opposite the present hospital. Pavilions were erected, using bush timber and second-hand iron and tarpaulins. This was depression times and money was scarce. The livestock exhibits was one of the main features of the show. Clysdale stallions gave exhibitions of their pulling power. Popular events included ladies hack, gents hack, bulls and milch cows, pigs and sheep. The wool section had only one class ‘the best fleece of merino wool.’ Trophies were also awarded for ‘Best Farm’ allocated on a points system for crop, fallow, stock, layout, general condition of the farm, and economical working. The district cropping competition was judged on about 50 acres, and fallow competition on 150 acres. Vegetable section was divided into reticulated farms and non-reticulated. Months of hard work by lady exhibitors was required for best display of farm and home products, with the principal ingredients produced on the farm. This included cakes, preserves, pickles, sweets, home cured hams and bacon, toilet soap, sand soap, cheese, candles, etc. However by 1937 farming was at low ebb, with many farms abandoned because of the depression. Tractors had also taken the place of those magnificent horses. So in 1937 the sixth show was somewhat similar to the first. It was held in the town hall and advertised as ‘spring show and curio exhibition.’ It was to be the last show until 1957 when the Yilgarn Agricultural Society was reformed. ©Lance Stevens 12
