believe it is already the end of January! The refurbishment at Ascott Gardens is progressing well. Thank you again to the residents, staff and families for your co-operation throughout this process. Our date for completion is now looking like early May 2018. The “Ascott Shop” is coming to life and quickly filling with lots of tempting goodies. If there are items you would like to see stocked in the shop please let us know. Prunus Lodge is certainly looking a picture. Despite the very hot weather the front garden remains a colourful and welcoming area to enjoy. Well done Kathy and the team!! As many of you would know Leila (Retirement Village and Admissions coordinator) has reduced her hours to part-time. Leila works Monday – Wednesday. Amanda Berrington is currently training in Leila’s position and she will be able to assist you when Leila is not available (Thursday and Fridays) As always Nic (Central West Administration) is also at the end of the phone to assist. Nic organises all the maintenance and all general enquiries. Natalie (Central West Accountant) is available to assist with any finance

Compassion, Respect, Integrity, Kindness and Inclusiveness. Each morning, when the sun shines onto the glass front doors, the wording of our five UPA values shines through onto the carpet, one under the other. I love that! It’s like a rainbow – a reminder of what is important to all of us at UPA. A FEW MORE LOVELY FINISHING TOUCHES You are most welcome to come and see Ascott’s new improvements, with new furniture & ornaments and creative touches creating a lot of ‘ooohs & aaaahs!’ Janelle, Catriona, Julie & Val have also worked together to create a beautiful shop display. Our residents are able to wander around the displays throughout each day at their leisure, to see what is available. Customers are always welcome too! MAGNOLIA COTTAGE We are drawing closer & closer to completion of Magnolia Cottage. Hopefully by mid-February we’ll be able to move our Magnolia Cottage residents back Into their own special, newly renovated rooms. I will let residents and their families know the exact dates when they are known. Then it will be ‘full steam ahead’ for the work on Camellia Cottage & the new Day Centre. DINING ROOM AREA EXTENSIONS Because we will be having more residents after the end of March, we are
building program hasn’t been easy for our residents, our families or our staff…. However it will be worthwhile. POPPY & CEDAR Late last year we welcomed Jenny Stephens to the position of Poppy & Cedar Cottages supervisor, working alongside staff, residents and their families. Jenny is well known to many of our residents and their families whom she has worked with in the hospital & health care systems as an RN, prior to her joining our ‘A’ Team staff. Jenny also runs a support group for folk living with dementia and their Carers. If anyone wishes to join the friendship, support group, I’m sure that Jenny would be really pleased to give you the details. It’s always lovely to see residents enjoying freshly picked tomatoes and garden produce, or patting the chickens. Some of our newly picked carrots have personalities of their own, qualifying for inclusion in the ‘odd bunch’ section of a supermarket. Residents are also enjoying Summer BBQ’s in the garden, when the weather is fine. ACCREDITATION VISIT The Accreditation audit results are back – and yes – everything went well. Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with the Auditors. They were impressed! They were also able to give feedback throughout the visit – on their findings. Well done everyone! WE ARE SO BLESSED….. To have such a wonderful team of caring staff. To have families and friends who visit and really become involved in the lives of their relative and also in Ascott family life.
retiring this year – and, whilst it is so hard for both of us to be saying farewell, we look forward to the future, both for ourselves, our families and also for our Ascott Gardens family too… (and Narelle & I will always be part of UPA and our Ascott family). And please don’t think that this change means that our Ascott family is becoming smaller – it’s actually going to be growing, with new staff to bring their own special talents into their role. Soon we will have 78 residents and their families joining us, along with extra staff & someone who will guide the growth. It’s going to be great! Narelle will be with us until the end of March and then she plans to have a long holiday prior to retiring in July this year. Narelle has always been a loving & caring heart of Ascott – and she has given 28 years of loyal service to UPA in the Central West. Well done Narelle! I will still be working here until mid-July, so I am with you for a while yet. People often ask what I will do when I retire - at the moment I’m thinking that I would enjoy volunteering to help with children’s’ reading groups or perhaps helping older folk who are learning English as their second language…and putting my teaching experience back to work! Summer: ‘Summertime is always the best of what might be.’ Until next time - God bless. Thank you Margaret Langford-Smith Facility Manager
Coordinator Naymul and his wife Fahmida welcomed their first child into the world, beautiful baby boy Nehan Naymul on the 7th November 2017… what a cutie! A Valentine Prayer I said a Valentine prayer for you and asked the Lord above to fill your heart and bless your soul With the precious gift of love. I asked Him for sincere love The kind that's meant to stay Just like the generous love You give to those you touch each day. I prayed for love from family And from every cherished friend Then I asked the Lord to give you
festive season. We are now back in full swing with our activities and outings. Our residents have been enjoying watching the tennis so we have incorporated our own competition called Seated tennis. This has been a real hit with our resident and a great team building activity. We have so many talented people at Ascott that we have started a craft afternoon. Every Monday afternoon we get together and do a different project. With the Orange show fast approaching we will working towards displaying some of our amazing arts and crafts. Out and about is still an outing that the residents thoroughly enjoy. In February we are heading out to Cargo for morning tea with the Presbyterian church group. We are still working very hard with our physiotherapist doing exercise 5 days a week. We have noticed the difference in the residents fitness level and flexibility. Future theme days we are looking forward to celebrating are Valentine’s day, St Patricks Day and International day of Happiness. Residents and staff will celebrate these special days with dressing up and lots of laughter, fun and giggles. We are looking forward to keeping you updated and our residents busy in the next few months.
Prunus Lodge has been very busy over the past couple of months with Christmas, bringing in the New Year and our upcoming Australia Day celebrations. We would like to take the time to remind all residents with the warmer weather we have been experiencing to try and keep as cool as possible and to use proper protection such as sunscreen and hats if you are heading outside in the sun. Please also ensure that you are well hydrated. Though the year has only just begun Prunus Lodge residents have already enjoyed a variety of activities including a Golf Tournament at a fellow Aged Care Facility and a live concert in Rose Cottage – special thanks to the band ‘None but Ned’ for donating their time and entertaining our residents all afternoon. These kinds of activities keep our residents interactive and positive and it is something that they all thoroughly enjoy. Prunus has recently welcomed two new family members – two pet budgies! These budgies are for all our residents to enjoy. They bring great joy to our residents and staff, lots of our residents used to have birds as pets - so it is a reminder for them about their childhood, which instantly brings a smile to their faces. We are currently having a competition where our staff and residents can choose two names
friends. We would also like to welcome our new staff and thank our previous staff for their hard work and dedication – you will be missed. A big thank you to our volunteers, as I have observed them visiting our residents and chatting to them in the lounge room over the Christmas period. This is appreciated as some of our residents do not have regular family visiting due to distance. Kind Regards Kathryn Farlow Care Manager
Year. December for us was very busy and very festive. We celebrated the Resident Christmas Party which was an absolute success. Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves and Santa popped in for a quick visit. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all of the local businesses of Molong who donated to our Christmas raffle and to our very own Sue Ecclestone for putting her time and effort into our raffles by asking and collecting from these businesses. Resident Christmas Our residents also went looking Party at Christmas lights a few days before Christmas and were astounded as to how much effort the residents of Molong go to, to prepare such exquisite lights and decorations. A few days later, we held a volunteer Christmas party to give thanks to our helpers and show our appreciation for all their efforts in 2017. The wonderful CWA ladies and some of their children joined us for a morning tea at which they presented us with a new iPod and a portable music speaker for us to have and use here at our facility. We CWA Morning tea were very thankful for our new technology additions and cannot wait to get it all up and running.
congratulate our PC worker Cally Oxenham on the birth of her beautiful baby girl ‘Wensday Anne’ who was born on Christmas day 2017. Our residents have enjoyed seeing Wensday around our facility in the last couple of weeks and she has done nothing but bring joy and smiles to our residents. We wish you all the best Cally with beautiful Wensday. Do it for Dolly Sad news broke the nation down in mid-January with the death of a rural girl named Dolly. All staff at Prunus Lodge joined in the campaign ‘Do it for Dolly’ by wearing blue ribbons to show support for these tragic events. I would also like to introduce our 2 new members to our team! Yes we have 2 new baby budgies. Our residents enjoyed our visiting birds so much that our Care Manager Kathy has approved 2 more animals to join our family. Our budgie cage has been kindly donated and so were our budgies. Names for our 2 budgies are still in the works and residents will win a prize if they come up with a winner. Well that’s about all from me for this newsletter. I hope everyone had a fun filled and safe Australia Day. Until next time, Thank you

We also have some exciting new programs planned to start in 2018 so………… Some interesting Facts: Vatican City is the country that drinks the most wine per capita at 74 litres per citizen per year. France was still executing people by guillotine when the first Star Wars movie came out. It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open. Farewell - Sadly, due to ill health, we have said farewell to Hazel Allen a much loved and committed volunteer. Hazel was the Cut’N’Curl hair salon assistant who gave many hours every Wednesday and in the process endeared herself to the residents. Hazel also assisted the Activity Officer with the residents’ Cafe 83. We wish Hazel a much better year health wise and if her circumstances improve we will welcome her back when the opportunity arrives. Thank You - We take this opportunity to thank Olwyn Ashton who has filled the void helping each week in the Salon. Olwyn already gives a great deal of time to provide activities for the residents of Poppy and Cedar Cottages and her help in the Salon is an extension of that program. Welcome - We are pleased to welcome two new volunteers: >Di Sherwood now takes up the position of assisting with Cafe 83 and takes on a role in her own right to that of being our bus driver’s wife!! Both Wayne & Di are what we term our ‘valued volunteers’. >Dulcie McLean joins us each month and lends her lovely voice to our singing group at each Praise Service conducted in Cedar Cottage. Together Our sincere thanks to both Di and Dulcie - we are grateful that you have joined our Team’. Everyone Achieves
